Centre of Research Excellence in Digestive Health Our Centre of Excellence in Transforming Gut Health (Previously CRE- Digestive Health) supports gut research, training and collaboration.

Our Centre is funded by the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Centres of Research Excellence program, from 2020-2024. It brings together researchers from universities, hospitals and research institutions in Newcastle, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide. World leading researchers, clinicians and healthcare providers are joining with stakeholders, patients and carers to improve the understanding, diagnosis and management of chronic digestive diseases.

The Centre of Research Excellence, Transforming Gut Heath (CRETGH), is excited to announce an upcoming presentation by International Visiting Academic Professor Tim Vanuytsel, MD PhD.
He will be presenting "Novel concepts in the origin of disorders of gut-brain interaction" on Friday 7th November 2025 at 12 Noon. The presentation will be held at HMRI, Caves Theatre, and will be open and free to all HMRI staff and researchers.

Dr Chien is a paediatric gastroenterologist based in Taiwan with five years of clinical experience, and is currently a Ph.D. candidate with research interests in disorders of gut-brain interaction and infant nutrition.

Researchers at the University of Newcastle are currently recruiting participants for the Digestive Health Biobank, as well as for Advanced Diagnostic Pathogen Screening in IBS (ADAPT) and Body Surface Gastric Mapping studies. They are looking for a wide range of people to participate; including healthy controls, people with symptoms and no diagnosis, as well as people diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Functional Dyspepsia and Gastroparesis.
