Centre of Research Excellence in Digestive Health Our Centre of Excellence in Transforming Gut Health (Previously CRE- Digestive Health) supports gut research, training and collaboration.

Our Centre is funded by the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Centres of Research Excellence program, from 2020-2024. It brings together researchers from universities, hospitals and research institutions in Newcastle, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide. World leading researchers, clinicians and healthcare providers are joining with stakeholders, patients and carers to improve the understanding, diagnosis and management of chronic digestive diseases.

They discussed the intricacies of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) ranging from the various causes, to the benefits of diet and exercise.

The Dietitians Australia Gastroenterology Summit is in under a months time! The day-long summit will be held virtually on Friday 6 June 2025 from 8:30am - 4:00pm (AEST).
This educational virtual summit will cover a variety of popular and practical GI topics, with an expert line up of multidisciplinary speakers including dietitians, gastroenterologists, psychologists, exercise physiologists, and researchers.
CRE Chief Investigator & Laureate Professor Nick Talley, will be presenting in the afternoon session "The common but often forgotten upper GI disorders" chaired by Ele Stojanoska. At 1PM, he will be discussing "Eosinophilic GI disorders - should dietary management take centre stage?". We expect the audience, consisting mainly of dietitians, will hope and expect the answer to be a resounding "YES"!

The Selected Topics in Gastroenterology Conference (STG) 2025 is almost here!
Over the weekend in Newcastle a world-class faculty of experts, including our CRE researchers, will be presenting specialist physicians including gastroenterologists, surgeons, doctors in training, and other healthcare providers with cutting-edge approaches to multiple topics across gastroenterology and hepatology.
Distinguished Laureate Professor Nick Talley will be presenting “5 practical tips that actually work in IBS - beyond standard therapy”, and Dr Kerith Duncanson will be presenting “Diet Therapies for Obesity - do they work?”. The 2025 NHMRC Investigator Grant recipients have been announced and Dr Ayesha Shah was successful in the Emerging Leadership 1 (EL1) category for 'From Bedside to Bench: Improving Clinical Care Using Insights from the Small Intestinal Microbiome'. Dr Shah aims "to develop better techniques for diagnosing small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and create new therapies to modify the gut bacteria to treat or even eradicate SIBO."
We would like to send our congratulations to Dr Ayesha Shah, and all other recipients of the 2025 NHMRC Investigator Grants.

Our upcoming event is not one to miss for clinicians!
This event will explore both established practices and groundbreaking innovations in diagnosis and treatment of GORD and dysphasia, providing clinicians with the critical insights needed to enhance patient care. Our Centre of Research Excellence (CRE) is transforming! With the awarding of the 2024-2029 NHMRC grant funding, our centre has been reshaped into the CRE in Transforming Gut Health.
Professor Nicholas Talley, Lead Investigator for the CRE is delighted by the prospect of progressing this important work: “I’m very pleased to share that the success, outputs and outcomes of our NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence has resulted in new funding for the coming 5 years, to progress novel work that builds on recent research gains. I want to thank my superb team of collaborators for their efforts over the last 5 years, and look forward to the next 5 years of leading research in transforming gut health”.

We are looking forward to sharing our future research and helping transform gut health, for good.
