Did you know that preterm milk is special? It’s made differently to term or mature milk to support the unique needs of preterm infants. It has more protein, fat and energy and also has more anti microbial factors to help protect against infections like NEC (necrotising enterocolitis). It even has growth factors in the colostrum that is first made. The perfect first nutrition for your precious baby! Even if they can’t feed directly at the breast, make sure you’re getting support to pump your precious milk for your baby - every little bit helps!

Do you have a story to share with other women about your breastfeeding experience? We know that peer support and the sharing of experiences can help other women meet their breastfeeding goals. If you have an inspiring story to share, or an experience you think will help other women, please share it with us and we can share it with our community. Email us at info@newcastlemumsandbubs.com.au or send us a message. Louise shared her amazing story in the Essence magazine by ABA and I’m sure she has inspired many mums!

Did you know… breastfed babies take in on average about 750mls of milk in a 24hr period? Of course there’s a wide range with some babies taking less and some taking a lot more. But it’s a smaller volume on average than a fully formula fed infant. This is why you needn’t worry that they don’t seem to need as much of your EBM as they would for a formula feed. What’s also interesting is that the volume of milk consumed doesn’t change much at all between 6 weeks and 6 months - the composition changes but the volume remains quite constant. It adapts as your baby grows to what he or she needs. Magic! ✨ 💕

Introductions time! Meet Dr Lisa. Lisa is a GP and IBCLC with over 20 years of clinical experience. She is passionate about helping mums, bubs and their whole families achieve the outcomes they are hoping for in terms of feeding and parenting in the early years. Lisa works 2 days a week with us at Mums and Bubs and 2 days in general practice. Her 3 children are almost fully grown and she is enjoying the extra down time she now has. Outside of work you might find her at pilates, walking along a beach or a forest trail or catching up with friends - usually combining the catch ups with the other activites!
