The bloody show🍾🍾🍾 I often share in my classes how beautiful and romantic the French language can be -certainly not the German language 🤣. They even manage to make the mucous plug sound poetic- le bouchon (muqueux) 👨🏻‍🎨 so what is it? Le bouchon muqueux, the mucous plug or in Australian called the bloody show is a thick jelly-like substance that seals the cervix during the pregnancy. As the cervix begins to soften and your body is getting ready for labour, it may be released. If it comes away too early the cervix is very clever and just makes it again. So how does it look? The best way to describe it, it’s similar to egg white often with streaks of blood in it. And of course Mother Nature always has a plan, it acts as a protective barrier. Not everyone will experience the release of le bouchon muqueux, and for those who do, it can happen days before labour begins- so it’s not a reliable sign of labour. This little story clearly stuck with one my lovely couples… so much so that they gifted me my very own bouchon! Definitely a memorable keepsake!! ❤️😎

As a Midwife and a woman who has birthed a baby, I thought being a birth partner would be a breeze when my wife gave birth to our daughter. In fact I found it one of the most stressful experiences seeing someone I love so much go through something so powerful and the ‘doer’ in me had to sit back and let her labour and birth unfold uninterrupted. She rocked labour and had a great birth (despite me 🤣), but having experienced birth from a third angle I have so much more respect and compassion for partners during birth. It’s a hard space to sit.
Yet another reason why birth preparation is so unbelievably valuable, not just for the birthing person but for everyone in the birthing space. I always say, ‘Remember, it’s your baby’s birthday’

I can give women life-saving medications and resuscitate babies, yet we are still the lowest paid of our profession in the country

What to do when labour is starting? The latent stage of labour can be anything from 5 minutes to 5 days! Distraction, mobilizing and hydration are just a few to be mentioned! For those of you who have done my classes you will know the story of my wife getting the parking ticket. This is her, just working through a contraction during early labour ❤️💪😎

My Story

Originally from Germany, I completed my midwifery training there back in 2005. I have fond memories of travelling in the snow on my motorbike to complete my practical hours as a midwifery student, freezing cold but alive with excitement and fear!! I then worked as a community midwife in Frankfurt which was great fun, I used a pushbike as my main form of transport and would cycle around the city looking after women in their homes.

Striving to learn more about midwifery - and the world, I found myself living in Ireland and working in huge maternity hospital in Dublin, so unbelievably different from the midwifery I had grown up in but I am so grateful for the skills I learnt and the amazing women I met along the way. A year of midwifery in the beautiful Ireland and I left in search of my final home, Australia. Since emigrating here on 2009, I have worked in large hospitals as well as models of continuity of care and found my love in the Birth Centre.

Working in a birth centre for me was rewarding, exciting and instinctive and I grew so much through my 7 years working there with a small group of outstanding clinicians and motivated empowered women. Whilst working in this space, I completed my yoga teacher training and prenatal yoga certificates, these two practices go hand in hand together and it was a natural combination for me. Then came Calmbirth. What a beautiful combination of science and spirit, I have been teaching Calmbirth now for 4 years and it continues to give me energy and insights into body, mind and the miracle that is labour, birth and parenting.

I’m now working in Newcastle as a midwife and Calmbirth educator, we escaped the big smoke to try something a little quieter and so far so good. Our son and Labradoodle love the beaches and the open spaces to run around, I look forward to seeing you in Newy or online :)
