Parents of neurodivergent children with asthma needed!

The University of Newcastle are interested in understanding the healthcare experiences of neurodivergent children when accessing support for their asthma, from the perspective of their parent/caregiver.

Are you:
➡️ a parent of a neurodivergent child with asthma?
➡️ aged 18 years or over?
➡️ a parent with access healthcare in Australia?

To participate, you would complete a 1-hour interview either on zoom or at the University of Newcastle Callaghan campus and short questionnaire.

The Asthma and Pregnancy Research Team kicking some major goals - 3 out of 5 pilot grants awarded by the Hunter Children's Research Foundation - HCRF were given to our team last Thursday 30 October!

Professor Vanessa Murphy for the project 'The Role of the Infant Microbiome in Asthma and Allergy Development Among Children at High Risk' - studying samples provided by our incredible BLT babies and their parents.

Dr Bronwyn Brew for the project 'Tracking Severe Wheeze from Infancy to Asthma in Childhood' - building on the solid foundation of BLT research.

Dr Gabriela Martins Costa Gomes for the infant lung function follow up study - for our new TTAP study cohort to develop new ways of predicting bronchiolitis.

Respiratory diseases account for 11% of Australia's total disease burden, yet they receive only 2% of national medical research funding. This stark disparity highlights an urgent need for increased investment.

Today, members of the Lung Health Alliance met with Dr. Monique Ryan, Member for Kooyong, to address the chronic underfunding of respiratory disease research. The Lung Health Alliance, which includes Asthma Australia, Lung Foundation Australia, TSANZ, National Asthma Council, and Cystic Fibrosis Australia, represents the 1 in 3 Australians living with a respiratory condition, totalling over 9 million people.

Dr. Ryan and the Lung Health Alliance are united in their call for the Federal Government to release the full allocation of the Medical Research Future Fund. The current cap of $650 million annually is hindering life-saving research.

We are actively recruiting across five different sites right now, looking for women with a medical diagnosis of asthma, who are between 12-17 weeks pregnant, and over the age of 18 years.

Recruitments sites are:
Newcastle - John Hunter Hospital
Maitland - The New Maitland Hospital
Gosford - Gosford Hospital
Sydney - Royal North Shore Hospital
Melbourne - Royal Women's Hospital
