The connection between the brain and the digestive system is well established.

Stress can influence gut function in a number of ways, from changes in motility to increased sensitivity, which may contribute to symptoms such as bloating, discomfort and altered bowel habits.

Understanding this relationship is an important part of managing many gastrointestinal conditions.

At Beechnut Medical, our doctors take a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to care, considering both physiological and lifestyle factors when supporting patients with digestive concerns.

📍 Specialist consultations at Beechnut Medical Rooms are available with a GP referral. Please speak with your GP to arrange a referral if appropriate.

We’re so grateful for kind words like this 🤍

Dr Napthali is deeply committed to providing compassionate, personalised care, taking into account not only medical needs, but individual goals and preferences too.

We’re also incredibly proud of our reception team, who work hard every day to support patients with warmth, efficiency and understanding - especially when care feels urgent.

Iron deficiency is common and may have multiple causes.

Dietary intake is one factor, but absorption can be influenced by how iron-containing foods are consumed. Vitamin C enhances non-haem iron absorption, while compounds in tea and coffee may reduce it when consumed with meals.

Examples of supportive dietary combinations include:
- Lean red meat with capsicum
- Lentils with tomato
- Fish with lemon
- Tofu with broccoli
- Spinach with Lime

However, dietary strategies alone may not correct iron deficiency. Investigation into the underlying cause - including gastrointestinal sources where relevant - is often required.
If you have been advised that your iron levels are low, speak with your GP about appropriate investigation and referral.

📍 Dietetic consultations at Beechnut Medical Rooms are available with a GP referral. Please speak with your GP for further information.

Digestive function can change with age.

From your 40s onwards, physiological shifts - including hormonal changes, alterations in gastric motility and differences in nutrient absorption - may influence gastrointestinal symptoms.

Some patients report:
• Increased bloating
• Reflux symptoms
• Altered bowel habits
• New food intolerances
• Low iron or vitamin B12 levels

While some variation can occur with age, new or persistent symptoms should not be self-managed without assessment. Appropriate evaluation ensures that significant pathology is excluded and that management is evidence-based.

Our Gastrointestinal Dietitian, Kerith, works within a medical model to support patients with diagnosed gastrointestinal conditions and nutrition-related deficiencies as part of a broader clinical plan.
