Fertility isn’t just a female conversation.

One of the most overlooked pieces we see in clinic?
👉 S***m quality.

Casey works with women every day who are doing everything right…but no one’s asked the question about their partner.

S***m health is influenced by lifestyle, environment, stress, and daily habits.

And the good news?
It’s something that can actually be improved.

Here are some of the biggest needle-movers:

• Reducing alcohol intake (especially regular or binge drinking)
• Prioritising whole foods rich in zinc, omega-3s + antioxidants (think red meat, eggs, salmon, tomatoes)
• Strength training (weight bearing increases testosterone)
• Managing heat exposure (saunas, hot tubs, laptops on laps 👀)
• Improving sleep quality + duration
• Reducing exposure to endocrine disrupters (plastics, fragrances, chemicals)
• Supporting stress management (because cortisol impacts hormone production too)
• Wearing looser underwear (yes… it matters)

Fertility is a shared responsibility, and a shared opportunity to improve outcomes.

Casey helps women look at fertility from the big picture and allows for every potential to be investigated.

Being heard shouldn’t be rare… but for a lot of people, it is.

This is what happens when someone actually takes the time to listen, understand, and explain.

NOT RUSH YOU OUT THE DOOR.

If you’ve been dismissed or overlooked before, you’re not alone… and you deserve better.

Everyone loves a pre-workout… until your gut starts hating you for it.

The reality is, a lot of mainstream pre-workouts are packed with artificial sweeteners, additives, fillers and high stimulants that can absolutely wreck your gut. Think bloating, urgency, reflux, or that wired-but-crashed feeling after.

And if your gut’s already a bit sensitive? It’s only amplifying the problem.

This is where a more natural approach wins.

A natural pre-workout isn’t about removing that “extra kick” it’s about supplying it properly:
• Stable, sustained energy (not spike → crash)
• Ingredients your gut actually tolerates
• Support for blood sugar, hydration and focus
• Less irritation, more consistency

Because what’s the point of training hard if your gut is constantly fighting you?

Inside our naturopath consults, we don’t just say “stop taking it” and send you on your way.

We look at:
• Your current routine and what you actually enjoy doing
• Your symptoms and gut health markers
• Your training demands and lifestyle

Then we build realistic swaps and strategies that still let you train and still give you energy. But without the side effects.

If your pre-workout is hitting harder than your session (and not in a good way), it might be time to reassess.

Book in with our team and let’s build something that works with your gut, not against it.

Here are 5 things people can do today that actually matter:

1. Eat at consistent times

Your gut thrives on rhythm.

Random eating = disrupted digestion, poor motility, and blood sugar chaos.
Start by eating meals at roughly the same times each day.

2. Slow down when you eat

Digestion starts in your mouth.

If you’re rushing, distracted, or stressed, your body literally can’t break food down properly.
Sit. Chew. Breathe.

3. Prioritise whole foods first

Before adding powders, greens, or supplements, build meals around real food.

Protein, fibre from whole foods, and minimally processed meals do more for your gut than most “quick fixes.”

4. Support stomach acid (don’t suppress it)

Chronic bloating, reflux, or heaviness after meals isn’t always “too much acid” often it’s not enough.

Things like eating slowly, avoiding excessive liquid with meals, and managing stress can support this.

5. Get your body moving daily

Gut motility = movement.

Walking (especially after meals), strength training, and general activity help keep everything moving through your system properly.

Your perfume might smell amazing… but what’s it doing to your hormones?

Synthetic fragrances are one of the most overlooked endocrine disruptors in our daily routines. Hidden under the single word “fragrance” on ingredient labels, these chemical cocktails can interfere with estrogen, progesterone, and thyroid hormone signalling, throwing off the very systems that regulate your mood, metabolism, weight, and cycle.

The thyroid is especially sensitive. Certain fragrance chemicals have been shown to mimic or block thyroid hormones, contributing to sluggishness, brain fog, and hormonal imbalance, symptoms we often dismiss or medicate without ever looking at the root cause.

Your skin absorbs what you put on it. Make it count. 🌸

If you’re constantly tired… and iron has crossed your mind it’s not just about taking more of it

It’s about whether your body is actually absorbing and using it, because you can be:
- eating well
- supplementing
- doing “all the right things”

…and still running low

Before jumping straight to higher doses, there are a few simple things that can make a real difference:

• Pair iron-rich foods or supplements with vitamin C (think citrus, kiwi, capsicum)
→ helps significantly increase absorption

• Keep coffee and caffeinated tea at least 1 hour away from meals or supplements
→ they can reduce iron absorption more than most people realise

• Be mindful of calcium around the same time
→ it competes for absorption, so spacing it out matters

Small changes like this can have a big impact.

But if fatigue is sticking around, it’s worth looking deeper, because iron is influenced by more than just intake.

If you’re unsure where you sit, book in with Mary via the link in our bio and let’s actually assess what’s going on instead of guessing.

Fibre isn’t just there to make you poo.

It’s literally food for your gut.

When you eat fibre, you’re not actually digesting most of it… your gut bacteria are.
And when those bacteria feed on fibre, they produce compounds called short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like butyrate.

These are powerful.

They help:
– strengthen your gut lining
– reduce inflammation
– support your immune system
– regulate blood sugar
– even influence hormones and mood

So when someone has a low fibre diet, it’s not just “slower digestion”… it’s a less diverse, less resilient gut environment.

Everyone wants the fancy supplement, the gut protocol, the greens powder…

…but no one wants to talk about fibre.

Because it’s too simple.

And that’s exactly why it gets overlooked.

Fibre isn’t just about “keeping you regular.”
It’s literally fuel for your gut bacteria, the good kind that influence everything from digestion, to hormones, to immune function, to mood.

Your thyroid is more than just a TSH number.

TSH is often the only thing tested, but it doesn’t actually tell us how well your thyroid hormones are being used by your body.

Because here’s the part that gets missed
T4 is your “storage” hormone.
T3 is your active hormone(the one that actually drives your metabolism, energy, mood, temperature regulation, and more.)

You can have “normal” TSH…
even “normal” T4…
and still feel exhausted, flat, struggling with weight, brain fog or cycle changes, because you’re not converting enough T4 → T3.

And if we’re not testing T3?
We’re missing a huge part of the picture.

This is why we look deeper.
Because your symptoms deserve more than “everything looks normal.”

If you’ve been told your thyroid is fine but it doesn’t feel that way… it’s time to dig further.

Our Story

Mullen Natural Health Centre has been serving the community of Newcastle in some form since 1958. While Peter Mullen has owned and lead the current business for nearly three decades, its history stretches back 60 years.

Our Family business is home to Naturopaths and nutritionists whom are experts in treating anxiety, mental health, women’s health, gut heath, thyroid health as well as childrens’ health. Our practice in Hamilton hosts our consult rooms and the Herb Bar, leading the way in over the counter natural medicines where drop-in consults are held . We are an all-in-one for acute care as well as symptomatic, long term and wellness health care.

Peter Mullen grew up in a very health-focused family, so it was only natural that he would go on to pursue a career in health. After achieving his degree in Naturopathy at the NSW College of Natural Therapies, Peter was lucky enough to return to his hometown of Newcastle to work for McKay BioChemist in 1989 - a time when very few people were hiring Naturopaths.

The practice was established by Clary McKay in 1958, and was one of the only natural health clinics in the region. The McKays had a fantastic reputation and people would queue down the stairs to see the McKays at HP Chambers in Hamilton.
