🚀 A major milestone in digital healthcare!

The Single Digital Patient Record (SDPR) is now live across the Hunter New England Local Health District including Calvary Mater Newcastle.

Hunter New England Local Health District, alongside Justice Health NSW and NSW Health Pathology Hunter New England sites, are proud to be the first in NSW to implement SDPR - a transformative step that will roll out to every NSW Health public hospital and health service.

The SDPR brings a patient’s healthcare information together in one secure place, enabling more connected, seamless care, so clinicians have access to the right information, at the right time, when it matters most.

👏 Congratulations and thank you to our staff for their dedication, hard work and commitment in making this transition a success.

🌟 A special thank you to our incredible SDPR team for their tireless support and for ensuring a smooth and successful transition to the SDPR.

Meet Charlotte 👋

As a speech pathologist at Calvary Mater Newcastle, Charlotte supports patients with swallowing and communication disorders through assessment, intervention and education.

While many people associate speech pathology with lisps or stutters, the profession also supports people with conditions including stroke, head and neck cancer, dementia and delirium.

Charlotte works with patients, families and nursing staff to support safe eating and drinking, as well as communication changes following various conditions.

Charlotte shares that the part of her role she enjoys most is hearing people’s stories. “I love to listen, learn about people, and hear their life experiences beyond being a patient,” she said.

Charlotte was inspired to become a speech pathologist through personal family experiences. Since graduating, she has worked across hospitals including in NICU, community and aged care settings - supporting patients from premature babies to 106 years old. 💙

Great to have you as part of the Calvary Mater Newcastle team, Charlotte.

🌍 International Clinical Trials Day is a chance to reflect on what clinical research means for our community in the Hunter.

As the Hunter region’s main cancer clinical trials centre, Calvary Mater Newcastle conducts more than 160 active trials, from first-in-human studies to Phase 4 and registry trials. These trials give local patients access to treatments years before they reach standard practice, without the need to travel to Sydney.

Beyond oncology, our teams are also involved in pioneering research across medicine, cardiology, surgery, intensive care, palliative care, clinical toxicology, liaison psychiatry and pharmacy.

Calvary Mater Newcastle Director of Health Research, Dr Wojt Janowski, said, “Every modern treatment we have today started out as a clinical trial - with patients willing to give up their time and accept uncertainty in the hope of better treatments, and with research teams working together to bring these studies to patients and run them safely.”

“I am proud to work alongside such talented individuals in an organisation that recognises the importance of this crucial work.”

Today, we honour the tireless efforts of everyone involved in clinical trials at Calvary Mater Newcastle – including research coordinators, data managers, nurses, pharmacists, doctors and allied health professionals - and extend our deepest gratitude to the dedicated participants whose involvement makes ground-breaking discoveries possible.

A sincere and heartfelt thank you! 💙

This National Volunteer Week, we proudly celebrate the incredible volunteers and auxiliary members at Calvary Mater Newcastle who generously give their time and energy to support our patients, staff, and wider community.💥

Our volunteers and auxiliary members offer comfort and companionship to patients, assist families, support hospital services behind the scenes, fundraise for patient comfort and care, and brighten someone’s day with a smile.

As a small token of our appreciation, we spent a wonderful morning with our volunteers at the newly reopened Newcastle Art Gallery for a special tour, followed by morning tea at the café.

It was a great opportunity to come together, enjoy one another’s company, and celebrate and thank them for their contribution to the hospital.

Thank you to all our volunteers and auxiliary members for everything you do - your support is truly appreciated, not just during National Volunteer Week, but all year round. 👏

🎉 Congratulations to Clare Madden, Nurse Practitioner, Consultation Liaison Psychiatry, who yesterday was announced as the recipient of the 2026 Calvary Mater Newcastle Nurse of the Year 🏆🌟

Clare is a highly compassionate and patient-centred clinician who consistently demonstrates empathy, professionalism, and respect in her care. She builds strong trust with patients experiencing acute mental health distress, helping them feel safe, heard, and supported, while also communicating thoughtfully with families and carers during challenging situations.
