Krystene Delaney has been volunteering at Calvary Mater Newcastle for the past five months. Along with two fellow volunteers, she has the unique opportunity to take our two PARO therapeutic robot seals, Rosie and George, throughout the hospital to visit patients and visitors. 🦭🦭

Developed to mimic the benefits of animal-assisted therapy, the seals help reduce patient stress, encourage meaningful interaction between patients and caregivers, and promote a greater sense of relaxation.

Krystene shared that the robot seals uplift spirits and spark conversations. She explained, “I find that the seals greatly benefit patients who are feeling anxious, providing a calming presence and gently distracting them from what they are going through.”

“I get such enjoyment out of knowing that the seals help patients open up and engage in conversations they may not otherwise have had.”

Thank you to Krystene and the team for bringing comfort and joy to our patients, and to our Auxiliary who funded the purchase of our seals! 🌟

🌟 Meet Erin – Nurse Educator in our Cancer Outpatients Service 🌟

Erin has worked at Calvary Mater Newcastle since 2009, starting in Emergency before moving into oncology.

“The Mater has given me a second family, lifelong friendships, and the chance to grow into leadership roles while learning new skills- all with the flexibility to raise my children. There are so many career paths and opportunities to study and learn here,” Erin shares.

On specialising in oncology, Erin says, “I enjoy getting to know the patient and their stories and being part of their journey. I share in the happiness, sadness and everything in between. It's a privilege to make a difference in someone’s life.”

Erin’s passion is teaching, “There is nothing better than seeing a nurse’s face light up when they achieve something they once thought they couldn't. Watching our nurses grow and become confident is incredibly rewarding.”

“This is why nursing at Calvary Mater Newcastle is special because we all want to support and empower each other to be the best clinicians we can be for our patients.” 💖

Thank you, Erin, for your dedication, heart and compassion.

Meet Thomas, Registered Nurse and Acting Nurse Unit Manager in Ward 4C 💙

Thomas has been a valued member of the Calvary Mater Newcastle nursing team for over four years.

Thomas says it takes a very strong person to be present and provide empathetic care for people when they are very unwell and in need of support. “Nursing is a profession I feel incredibly lucky to be part of, because it allows me to be that person,” he said.

After moving from Sydney, Thomas quickly discovered what truly makes the Mater special – its people. “The strong bonds formed within the nursing team and across the hospital, along with the lasting connections made with patients, are what truly set the Mater apart.”

Proud of his ward and colleagues, Thomas says the team are not only dedicated nursing professionals, but enjoyable and empathetic human beings. “We face every challenge head-on, celebrate every win - big or small - and do it all with a smile and a good sense of humour.”

Thank you, Thomas for being a part of our team.

🌟 Meet Kaye and Meg – teenage friends reunited through volunteering at Calvary Mater Newcastle 💙

In 1959, over 66 years ago, at the tender age of 15, Kaye and Meg met at TAFE Business School. After completing their course, they went their separate ways, armed with skills in typing and shorthand. Meg joined the Navy and had the chance to see the world, while Kaye put her clerical skills to work closer to home.

It wasn’t until just a few months ago that the two friends crossed paths again at Calvary Mater Newcastle. Kaye has been volunteering on Ward 4C and at the Auxiliary lolly table for over 21 years, while Meg recently began her volunteering journey at our Villas.

From their first meeting at TAFE to reconnecting at the Mater, their friendship has come full circle. Together, they’re now sharing laughter, stories, and a commitment to caring for others – proving that some bonds are truly timeless. 💛

Honouring Hayden’s memory through the gift of giving 💙

Lauren Flett has found a beautiful way to honour the memory of her partner, Hayden Moth, by spreading joy to others this Christmas. Hayden, an adolescents and young adults (AYA) patient at Calvary Mater Newcastle, was loved for his kindness, warmth and genuine care for others.

Hayden’s final wish was to spend Christmas 2024 at home surrounded by his family and loved ones. While he was able to fulfil this wish, it sadly became his last Christmas.

In his honour, Lauren and her co-workers at Story House Early Learning Aberglassyn organised a heartfelt gift collection for our AYA patients and the children and grandchildren of Calvary Mater Newcastle patients. The children even helped choose and wrap the gifts themselves, learning the true spirit of Christmas along the way.

These gifts will be shared across the hospital by our Social Work team, helping spread warmth, kindness and Hayden’s legacy this festive season. 💫

A big heartfelt thank you to everyone involved.

🎄Last week, the Calvary Mater Newcastle chapel was filled with the spirit of Christmas as our Pastoral Care team hosted a special seasonal service for patients, visitors and staff.

✨We were pleased to be joined by the talented Year 2 choir from Corpus Christi Primary School, who shared their wonderful voices during the service before lifting spirits across our corridors with joyful and energetic Christmas songs. 🎵🎶

The celebration was made even more special by the presence of proud parents among the audience, many of whom are valued members of the Mater team.

Thank you to everyone who came and celebrated with us. 👏❤️

💛 Sleapy’s Foundation has launched new Head and Neck Cancer Care Bags in partnership with Calvary Mater Newcastle, thanks to a generous $10,000 Lyone Foundation grant.

Developed with Calvary Mater Newcastle patients and frontline healthcare workers, these bags offer practical and emotional support to people undergoing treatment.

“These care bags are born from lived experience and a simple idea, when someone walks through the hospital doors, they should not have to carry worry on top of treatment,” said Peter Sleap, Founder of Sleapy’s Foundation.

“We know the small comforts, can make an enormous difference. These packs are our way of stepping in with practical and emotional support when it matters most.”

Calvary Mater Newcastle Cancer Services Operations Manager, Marissa Ledlin, thanked both Foundations for their support, saying the packs will make a tough time a little easier for patients. 🤝💗

A big thank you to everyone involved in making these packs possible, your support is truly appreciated!

A huge congratulations to Gemma McMillan, Work Health & Safety Consultant at Calvary Mater Newcastle, on receiving the 2025 Newcastle Volunteer Service Award. 🎉

As Club Captain at Merewether SLSC, Gemma gives countless hours as a volunteer surf lifesaver, helping keep our community safe.

Gemma said she is deeply grateful to Federal Member for Newcastle, Sharon Claydon MP, for recognising the contribution of volunteers in our community. “To be acknowledged was truly humbling.”

“Being a surf lifesaver is about protecting people in the water, saving lives, creating great Australians, and building better communities. It’s never about individual recognition,” said Gemma.

Well deserved, Gemma - we’re so proud! 👏🌊
