Early signs of eating disorders can often look harmless at first, skipping meals, becoming more focused on “healthy” eating, exercising more, or becoming increasingly concerned about body image. But these subtle changes can sometimes be the first indicators that a young person is struggling.

For parents, it can be difficult to know what’s normal and when it might be time to seek support. Understanding the early warning signs and responding with care, curiosity and compassion can make a real difference.

At CK Health, Psychologist Catherine Bull works with adolescents and families experiencing concerns around food, body image and eating behaviours. Catherine provides a warm, supportive environment where young people feel safe to talk openly, and where parents can receive guidance on how to best support their child.

If something doesn’t feel quite right, trust your instincts. Early support can make a significant difference in recovery.
** We're currently offering an introductory special of only $150 per appointment with Catherine Bull. ** Medicare rebates still apply if you have a mental health plan.
We’re here to help — offering a safe space, practical guidance, and compassionate care for both young people and their families. https://ckhealth.com.au/book-your-consultation/

Binge eating isn’t a failure of willpower — and it’s not a “food addiction.”
Very often, it’s a completely predictable biological response to restriction.
Many people who struggle with binge eating believe something is wrong with them. They describe feeling out of control, addicted to certain foods, or unable to stop once they start. But what’s often overlooked is that when the body experiences restriction, it moves into survival mode.
Restriction doesn’t have to mean extreme dieting. It can look like skipping meals, rigid food rules, “being good” all day, being told what or how much to eat, or even subtle food insecurity. To the brain, these all signal potential scarcity. And when the brain senses scarcity, it drives urgency around food. That urgency can feel like a binge — but it’s actually protection.
If restriction fuels binge eating, the answer isn’t more control. It’s more safety and consistency.

That means:
✔️ Regular meals
✔️ Adequate nourishment
✔️ Gently loosening rigid food rules
✔️ Rebuilding trust with your body

When food becomes predictable and no longer forbidden, the survival response settles. Hunger cues regulate. Cravings feel less intense. Eating becomes calmer and more stable.

If you or your teen are struggling with binge eating, you don’t have to navigate it alone.
Special Offer: For a limited time pay only $150 for Psychology appointments with our eating disorder expert Catherine Bull. Medicare rebates still apply with a mental care plan.

Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is restriction of specific food and/or volume of food because of the taste, texture, or fear of choking or vomiting. It can commonly be associated with anxiety, autism, PTSD, depression, OCD and ADHD.
Unlike some other eating disorders it's not driven by body image. If you have concerns around your relationship to food then reach out to us. Our new Psychologist Catherine Bull treats a variety of eating disorders and can help you see a way forward. For a limited time appointments are discounted to $150 per session and you will still be entitled to a medicare rebate if you have a mental care plan from your GP. Book online or call us 4077 3803.

We are collecting donations for Hope in a Suitcase. Hope in a Suitcase is a non-profit organisation that provides children entering foster care with their own suitcase filled with essentials—like clothes, toiletries, toys, and books—replacing the plastic bags often used to move their belongings. It aims to restore dignity, provide comfort, and show they are valued.
They are in desperate need of the following (all items must be new):
Clothing for girls size 8, 10, &12, or boys size 6 or 8.
Blankets suitable for 8+ e.g. throw rugs.
If you would like to donate please drop these items off to CK Health, 136 Glebe Rd Merewether.
We are putting as many items together as we can. Many Thanks.
