The TTOCS Study
Minimising Oral Corticosteroids in asthma using Treatable traits.
WHY IS THIS STUDY IMPORTANT?
Oral Corticosteroids (OCS) such as prednisone are highly effective at treating asthma attacks and are used as maintenance treatment in 25% of people living with the disease.
However, OCS also causes adverse effects which leads to other health issues and an increase in health care use e.g. hospital admission.
The latest data confirms that a lifetime cumulative dose of only 1000mg of OCS is associated with substantial comorbidities. This is approx. 4 courses of OCS.
The medications are overprescribed and are a major public health issue in Australia.
The TTOCS Study investigates whether a new personalised approach to managing asthma, called treatable traits, can reduce the use of these medications. This approach involves identifying and treating other medical problems, risk factors and behaviours that may make the person’s asthma worse.
If successful, this approach will prevent not only future asthma attacks but also future side effects that contribute to excessive healthcare use.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
To help us test this approach, we are looking for adults with asthma who have taken corticosteroid tablets (e.g., prednisone) in the past 24 months.
Eligible participants will be randomised to one of the two study arms. All participants will receive additional asthma care, and the participants randomised to the intervention arm will receive the treatment based on the new personalised treatment approach.
The TTOCS Study is being conducted at multiple sites across Australia and will involve face to face and phone visits over a 12-month period.

The Piggotts Story – celebrating 50 years of business!
Christopher and Shirley Piggott met in Sydney University whilst studying Pharmacy. They married and moved to Newcastle to buy their first pharmacy in 1968 from Mr Borthwick, in the Blackbutt shopping village. When Charlestown Square opened in 1979, Chris opened a second pharmacy. It was soon to be one of the busiest pharmacies in the Hunter. Chris was a big personality and became well known in the region, especially with regular radio and TV appearances. At the same time, Chris and Shirley were loving parents to their 4 children. 2 boys and 2 girls. Nobody would have guessed 3 of them later would follow in their parents footsteps and become pharmacists. The one son who instead studied Surveying, later fell in love and married Sandra, an Austrian pharmacist!
Though still teaching Pharmacy Management at Newcastle University and maintaining his a passion of Pharmacy, Chris is now semi-retired. In 2009 Skye and Anthony took over the family business at Blackbutt. Anthony Piggott is now the driving force and ensuring the Piggott name remains synonymous with quality and caring Pharmacists. Anthony’s natural business acumen led to expanding to Hamilton, Hamilton South, Branxton and Lambton with the help of his brother, and his wife Sandra, as well as other great pharmacists Lee Grundy and Brett Plumb.
