Physiotherapy can be of enormous benefit for animals, the same as it for humans. Physio aids in faster recovery from surgery, trauma, sports injuries, and age related complaints. We treat a wide variety of conditions: spinal and neurological, athletic injuries, arthritis, acute and chronic back injuries, orthopaedic cases (such as hip and elbow dysplasia, knee injuries), pre and post surgery, and age related problems. The aim is always to alleviate pain ,restore to optimum function and regain as much fluid, pain free movement as possible

Our physiotherapy Services:

Many treatment modalities are suitable for both humans and animals. Animal physiotherapists determine what techniques are effective and safe (or not suitable) for your companion. Mobilisation & Stability:
We manipulate joints, massage and stretch muscles and ligaments, and design a programme to suit your animal’s condition, age and temperament. Strengthening & Balance
We need good balance and coordination to avoid injury and relapse. After any trauma, surgery or just inactivity, we automatically lose our sense of balance and core strength, and we need to actively retrain to get it back. Rehabilitation & Recovery
Having a rehabilitation plan for your animal will help them recover from any injury or surgery quickly and avoid recurring complications and injury in the future. Caring hands on approach:
Animal physiotherapists choose techniques specific to the needs of our clients. For example, manipulation, neuromuscular stimulation, dry needling (acupuncture), hot and cold therapy, hydrotherapy, appropriate movement and exercise, balance and postural correction, myofascial release. We also offer alternative techniques

Holistic therapies such as Bowen, Reiki, homeopathy, and Craniosacral technique may also be of benefit to your animal and can be used in conjunction with more mainstream approaches.

Finding the perfect pet for you, or perfect home for your dog…
A man contacted me via my website asking for help with his small one-year-old dog, the man is wheelchair-bound, and someone had suggested a small dog as a companion.

Shortly after acquiring this small dog, the man in question realised he had purchased not just a friend but a very active intelligent young dog who was bored, under stimulated and lonely…

Long story cut short, (but short in time, only took a week!)… with about 8 people involved, ringing around dog trainers to eventually find one remarkable woman who could help, posting on social pages for help in walking, training, socialising this little dog. A wonderful outcome,

Stage 1️⃣ resulting in daily walks and home enrichment,
Stage 2️⃣ resulting in H admitting he should have bought a cat, and
Stage 3️⃣ finding the perfect couple to be the new family for this little guy.

What can I tell you that you haven’t heard a million times before re Xmas safety for your pets?
You already know…

- No human Xmas food or treats
- Don’t overfeed them, particularly with foods like bread
- Heat is a killer… if the hot footpath hurts your feet it hurts theirs too
- Chocolate is good for us, but can be fatal for dogs, and
- Watch out for anxiety over the holidays - being home alone, fireworks, and an increase in visitors can be the cause.

If you want to know more about anxiety in pets, how to avoid it, and the signs, along with a few things you might not have thought about, check out my recent blog post here: https://sydneyanimalphysiotherapy.com.au/2023/12/caring-for-your-pets-over-christmas-what-you-might-not-already-know/

Have a wonderful Xmas and New Year with your human and animal families… I hope it is full of play, good company, sunshine, swims, and maybe some fulfilled wishes ###

I just listened to a conference on Feline Nutrition, which emphasised cats need mostly raw meat, bones, and feathers for good health, then I read a review of a study in the USA of hundreds of cats, concluding cats on a vegan diet for a few months were healthier than cats on an ordinary cat diet including meat of some kind.

Well, the media is notoriously confusing.

After listening to the conference, I’ve added bones and more raw to my cat’s diet. She loves it, I expected her to be a fussy eater, but she’s coming back for seconds. Maybe animals know what’s good for them.

In this blog a share a few pointers about caring for cats, avoiding boredom and how to trick your cat into doing their rehab. Enjoy: https://sydneyanimalphysiotherapy.com.au/2023/09/cat-wellness-raw-diets-vegan-studies-and-enriched-lives/

Stay Active, Stay Happy! The power of exercise for our fur companions 🐾

Just like humans, dogs thrive with appropriate exercise, and it's vital for their overall well-being and longevity.

🐶 Puppy Play and Care. For adorable puppies, avoiding overdoing exercise is essential as their bones and joints are still developing. Short, gentle walks and playtime are ideal for keeping them healthy and happy.

🦮 Caring for Senior Dogs. Even in their golden years, senior dogs need to move. Short, gentle walks, swimming, or even just following their owner around the house are great ways to keep them active and engaged.

🐕‍🦺 Different Dogs, Different Needs. Every dog is unique, and their exercise requirements vary based on factors like breed, size, and temperament. Active breeds like agility dogs need plenty of stimulation and exercise, while couch potatoes require less.

🐾 The Joy of Sniffing. Sniffing during walks isn't just for fun; it's excellent stimulation for a dog's brain. Allow them to explore and socialise during walks for a fulfilling experience.

🏥 Post-Surgery and Rehab. After surgery, dogs need specific and graded exercises to aid their recovery. Consulting an animal physiotherapist or rehab vet can ensure the best results post-surgery.

🍃 Mix It Up! Keep exercise fun and diverse! Switch between walking, ball play, swimming, and more to prevent boredom, maintain fitness, and prevent injuries.

Personalised care for you and your beloved companion 🐾

At New Newcastle & Sydney Animal Physiotherapy, we treat each patient individually, tailoring our programs to suit you and your precious animal. Our approach begins with:

1️⃣ Choosing the right treatment - We start with a veterinary diagnosis and thorough history taking, followed by our own assessment, gait assessment and palpation.

2️⃣ Treatment - We choose techniques, such as stretching, soft tissue release, trigger point therapy, dry needling, postural correction, suitable exercise/movement plan and any other treatments as required.

3️⃣ Home - So you know exactly how to care for your pet after treatment, we take as much time as necessary to teach you any home care, and exercise, and discuss concerns and expectations.

Hi, I’m Kristine! If we haven't met yet, I'm your holistic animal physio. I’ve been happily working with people for decades, but when it became possible to study animal physiotherapy in Australia, I jumped at the chance. Completing a master's degree in animal physio allowed me to start treating and healing animals, as well as remaining involved with animal welfare, my 2 big passions.

My expertise allows me to treat different kinds of animals of all ages, but I have a particular fondness for the oldies. I have seen many times their positive response to a little intervention and treatment. Having said that, all ages can benefit, e.g. a hyperactive, floppy pup, a stiff, lethargic middle-aged dog experiencing ‘dog pause” and needing to change her/his regime, cats needing to be tricked into exercising more or doing their rehab. From the many animals I've loved and cared for over the years, I understand the impact of proper care on their vitality.

My expertise extends to treating animals of all ages, but I hold a special place in my heart for older animals. I have witnessed firsthand the incredible response they show to a bit of attention, adjustments in exercise plans, and manual treatments.

If your furry companion needs exceptional care and expert physiotherapy services in Sydney, the Central Coast, or Newcastle, reach out to me, and take the first step toward a healthier and more active life for your beloved animals. 🐾 Visit our website: https://sydneyanimalphysiotherapy.com.au/

What do we need to know about puppy exercise? Anything? Don’t puppies just play? Yes, but there is such an industry around all things to do with dogs, cats, and our animal family, how do we get it right?

Puppy exercise for me naturally makes me think about PLAY and how important this is.

Yes, puppies naturally play, get tired, sleep, then start all over; but maybe a couple of key points here:

What do we need to know about puppy exercise? Anything? Don’t puppies just play? Yes, but how do we get it right? Read more inside.

I mentioned this book in my last blog “how to say goodbye”. The chapter in Canine Spirit: Love of Dog, by BJ Allen on saying goodbye to beloved pets was so helpful and supportive. The book is intelligent and insightful on so many levels I thought it would be good to do a mini review.

Throughout, Barbara emphasises the need to have a good relationship with dogs, these beings in our care, and that they are part of your family, not something to be bought just for company, novelty or amusement.

Today's post is about the love and loss of my three beloved pets, Cody, Danny and Gracie, who brought me and many others so much love and joy.

There is no easy way to say goodbye to beloved friends.

For me it was a few months of indecision around not wanting to end their lives before they were ready, and yet knowing when it was time to free them of their tired bodies.

I know it was the right thing to do, the right time, and I am happy to think they’re off running free somewhere, but their absence will hurt for quite a while.

Our pets touch our lives in so many ways, as you can read about in this post.

This is the first time in 30 years that I’ve had no animal friends in my home. I left Sydney for Newcastle 15 months ago, with my 3 companions packed into the car – 19 year old Danny, 11 year old Cody and 20 year old Gracie, all rescues, all best friends. Danny, a black […]
