Cosmetic surgery is only one option available to individuals considering a change to their appearance. It may not be suitable for everyone. All surgical procedures carry risks, including potential complications, variable recovery experiences, and unpredictable outcomes. The results of any surgery are influenced by a range of individual factors, such as genetics, medical history, lifestyle, diet, and adherence to post-operative care.

Recovery requires appropriate time, support, and aftercare, and may include discomfort, absence from work, and temporary restrictions on daily activities. Experiences of pain, healing timelines, and outcomes differ greatly between individuals.

No advertising content should be interpreted as suggesting surgery is needed to fix normal features or changes such as ageing or post-pregnancy body changes. We do not support terminology that implies a feature is problematic.

Before making any decisions, it is essential to have a thorough consultation with an appropriately qualified health practitioner, such as a Plastic Surgeon. We also recommend seeking a second opinion before proceeding. For detailed information about surgical risks, recovery, and eligibility, please visit the link in our bio or website.

Celebrating milestones: One year of Avery Aesthetics, 8 years of Avery Plastic Surgery, and 12 years of caring for Newcastle – a note from Dr Gary Avery.

This year we celebrate one year of Avery Aesthetics, eight years of Avery Plastic Surgery, and twelve years since my family and I made Newcastle home. These milestones reflect your trust, the relationships we’ve built, and the purpose behind our work.

Since arriving in Newcastle, our connection to this community has only grown. We’ve expanded our team and services, most recently adding non-surgical care to complement surgery. Avery Aesthetics is a natural extension of our vision—to provide trusted, evidence-based aesthetic care that respects each individual’s journey and embraces self-care as part of well-being.

To our surgical patients, thank you for letting us stand beside you during life’s most personal moments. We’re proud to now offer integrated care that prepares skin for surgery, supports recovery, and helps maintain results—or provides alternatives when surgery isn’t the right fit.

Whether surgical or non-surgical, our commitment remains the same: thoughtful, evidence-based, individualised care. Thank you for placing your trust in us—it’s a privilege we never take for granted.

💚 Swipe through to share some memories with us.

True or false – An abdominoplasty is a substitute for weight loss?

False - An abdominoplasty is not a substitute for weight loss or a weight loss procedure. Instead, it's designed to remove excess skin and repair separated abdominal muscles if appropriate.

If you are considering an abdominoplasty, it’s important that you are at or very close to your ideal weight, and that you’ve maintained this weight - ideally for at least 12 months - before proceeding with surgery.

These photographs show before surgery and 4 months after combined abdominoplasty and reduction mammoplasty (breast reduction) surgery. During the abdominoplasty surgery, Dr Avery excised over 1.7 kg of excess skin and tissue in addition to 500ml of fat removed via liposuction. During the breast reduction, there was 190g removed from the left breast and 244g removed from the right breast, which also addressed some minor breast asymmetry. Scars from surgery are permanent and will generally settle and fade over time, with up to 18 months before the final result can be seen - https://hubs.la/Q03w94ty0

When it comes to surgery — whether for the body or face — skin quality can play an important role. Factors such as collagen density, elasticity, and dermal structure may influence how skin responds during healing and scar formation.

At Avery Aesthetics, medical-grade device and laser treatments may sometimes be integrated into surgical care plans under the guidance of a registered health practitioner, with the aim of supporting skin condition. These options may be considered before surgery (to help prepare the skin) or after surgery (to assist with scar care and overall skin health during healing). Suitability always depends on the individual, treatment type, and timing.

Because medical-grade laser and light treatments must be carefully scheduled to avoid complications (including UV exposure), timing is based not only on the season but also on recovery stage and individual skin needs. For areas typically covered (such as the abdomen or thighs), some treatments may be possible year-round if clinically appropriate.

Liposuction is a surgical technique used to remove fat from beneath the skin’s surface.

Dr Gary Avery does not perform liposuction as a stand-alone procedure. Instead, it may be used selectively, and only in conjunction with other surgical procedures such as abdominoplasty or body contouring, when clinically appropriate. In these cases, liposuction may help to address specific localised fat deposits and complement the goals of the primary surgery.

Possible risks from liposuction include, but are not limited to: contour irregularities, fluid accumulation, infection, changes in sensation, thrombosis, or fat embolism.

Every surgical plan is carefully developed based on individual anatomy, goals, and evidence-based practice.
