Today is . We take this opportunity to recognise the extraordinary dedication, precision, and care that define the specialty of Plastic Surgery.

“As a Specialist Plastic Surgeon, I feel deeply honoured to be part of a profession that transforms lives every day. Plastic surgery encompasses a wide scope - from reconstructive procedures that restore form and function, to cosmetic surgeries that play a valuable role in enhancing physical appearance and supporting psychological well-being.”

World Plastic Surgery Day highlights the positive impact that plastic surgeons have on individuals’ lives. It is not just about aesthetics or appearance—it’s about restoring function and improving quality of life.

Today is also a time to educate the public on patient safety, informed consent, and evidence-based care, and to address lingering misconceptions about our field.

All surgical procedures carry some risk. It is important to discuss these risks with your surgeon to ensure you have realistic expectations and are fully informed. Some procedures may not be suitable for everyone and individual results will vary.

Always talk to a Specialist Plastic Surgeon before making a decision. Your Specialist Plastic Surgeon will assess your condition and general health, and plan the treatment that is best suited to you. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Choosing to undergo cosmetic surgery isn’t just about changing how you look — it’s about supporting how you feel, too.

At Aspire, we believe mental well-being is just as important as physical results. Every step of your surgical journey - from your first enquiry to recovery — is a chance to feel seen, heard, and emotionally supported.

Cosmetic surgery can bring positive changes, but it’s essential to approach it with realistic expectations, a strong support network, and honest conversations about your motivations and goals.

Here’s how we help ensure your journey is emotionally and mentally aligned:

🔹 We prioritise your mental health
At your first consultation, we take the time to understand why you’re seeking surgery. Whether it’s a confidence boost or a longstanding personal goal, we ensure it comes from a place of empowerment, not pressure. We take time to understand your reasons for surgery. If there are signs of underlying conditions such as Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), we’ll support you with care and, if needed, recommend additional mental health resources. Your well-being is always our priority.

🔹 We listen - without judgement
Your consultation is a safe, confidential space to express your hopes, worries, and expectations. We’re here to support you emotionally, not just surgically.

🔹 We encourage support systems
Bringing a trusted friend or family member can help you feel grounded and supported during consultations and decision-making.

🔹 We take the time to get it right
There’s no rush. Every step of your journey is thoughtfully planned with your mental and emotional well-being at the centre.

At Aspire, we’re here to walk with you - every step of the way - with empathy, honesty, and expert care. Because the best results are those that reflect both your outer goals and inner well-being.

*All surgical procedures carry risk. Discuss these risks with your surgeon to ensure you’re fully informed and have realistic expectations.

Dr Miteff is attending the Annual Plastic Surgery Congress in Sydney this week — a fantastic opportunity to reunite with both long-standing colleagues and make new connections across the specialty.

One highlight has been reconnecting with her past Plastic Surgery Registrars from Newcastle, NSW.

As part of their specialist training, these talented doctors have undergone rigorous, hands-on experience in both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery - working under the close supervision of experienced surgeons, including Dr Miteff. Throughout their training, they’ve developed essential surgical skills, assisting in theatre, performing procedures, and managing complex patient care.

It’s incredibly rewarding to see how far they’ve come and to reflect on the strong foundations built through structured mentorship and guided experience.

Events like PSC 2025 don’t just push the boundaries of surgical knowledge - they also reinforce the importance of connection, collaboration, and continuous learning in an ever-evolving field.

We look forward to sharing more of Dr Miteff’s insights from the Congress — watch this space!

That’s a wrap on .

Dr Kirstin wore her bold, colourful socks today as a small gesture with a big message: mental health matters - a symbol of support for mental health in medicine.

Today was about more than just fun socks. It’s a day about starting honest conversations around mental health and breaking the silence many healthcare professionals face. Mental illness doesn’t discriminate - even those caring for others need care too.

Let’s keep the momentum going. Let’s keep talking. Let’s keep breaking the stigma.

By talking openly and supporting one another, we help reduce the stigma and make mental health a priority in our healthcare community.

Follow and help shine a light on for doctors and health professionals everywhere.

Whether you’re scheduled for a day procedure or an overnight stay, packing the right items in your hospital bag can make all the difference to your comfort and experience.

When preparing for surgery, there are a few essential items you’ll need to bring with you to the hospital. To avoid any last-minute stress or confusion, we recommend creating a checklist. It’s a simple way to stay organised—and it can spare your loved ones from making unnecessary trips for forgotten items.

▫️Day Surgery Patients
You’ll be at the hospital for approximately 4–6 hours, so you’ll only need the essentials:

🔹Medicare card
🔹Health fund details
🔹Comfortable clothing: If your surgery involves your face, head, upper torso, or breasts: wear a button-up or zip-up top. If your surgery is below the waist: wear loose pants or a skirt.
🔹Your Glasses (If necessary)

▫️For Overnight Patients
Bring everything listed above, plus the following:

🔹Mobile phone
🔹Phone charger (a longer cord is ideal)
🔹Pajamas: Short sleeves and ¾ pants or shorts are often the best option. If surgery is on your legs, consider packing a nightie or long shirt. Choose roomy, comfortable sleepwear rather than anything stylish.
🔹Slip-on, flat shoes
🔹Underwear
🔹Slippers or socks
🔹Any prescription medication, bring in original packaging and ensure it’s clearly labelled
🔹Travel-sized toiletries
🔹Hairbrush, comb, and hair ties
🔹Hand sanitiser

We recommend that these items not be taken to the hospital:

✖️Talcum powder
✖️Jewellery
✖️Large sums of money
✖️Other valuables

The aim is to make your hospital stay as comfortable as possible, with no hiccups related to paperwork or identity. The items we recommend packing in your hospital bag may seem small, but they make a big difference in your recovery experience.

At Aspire, we’re here to guide you every step of the way- starting with the little things that help you feel at ease. We’re here to help you feel prepared and supported - right down to the little details.

*All surgical procedures carry risk. Discuss these risks with your surgeon to ensure you’re fully informed and have realistic expectations.

Compression garments play a crucial role in post-operative care and recovery.

Designed to deliver targeted, controlled pressure and support to specific areas - usually around the surgical site - compression garments are widely used following many types of plastic and reconstructive procedures, such as abdominoplasty, breast surgery, brachioplasty, liposuction, or other body contouring surgeries.

Here’s a closer look at how compression garments help your recovery:

🔹Reduce Swelling: Minimise fluid build-up and boost circulation to control post-surgery swelling.
🔹Provide Support & Comfort: Support muscles and tissues, easing pain and improving stability during movement.
🔹Alleviate Pain: Reduce discomfort by limiting unnecessary tissue movement for easier daily activities.
🔹Help Skin Conform: Promote smooth skin tightening to fit your body’s new contours after body shaping.
🔹Manage Scars: Apply gentle pressure to soften and flatten scars, improving their appearance over time.
🔹Minimise Bruising: Limit blood vessel movement to reduce bruising and skin discoloration.
🔹Protect Incisions: Shield wounds from bacteria, friction, and accidental bumps during recovery.
🔹Reduce Complications: Control fluid to lower risk of seromas (fluid pockets) and hematomas (blood collections).
🔹Improve Circulation: Enhance blood flow to reduce clot risks and support tissue healing.

Swelling after surgery is completely normal — it’s your body’s natural way of protecting and healing the surgical area. Proper care, patience, and consistently wearing your compression garment will help ensure the best possible recovery and long-lasting results.

If you have any concerns about your recovery or how to wear your garment properly, always check-in.

Take care, trust the process, and give your body the time it needs to heal.

*All surgical procedures carry risk. Discuss these risks with your surgeon to ensure you’re fully informed and have realistic expectations.

21/05/2025

May is Melanoma Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of skin health and early detection. Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer. It often begins as an unusual mole or a new dark spot with irregular borders or multiple colours. While it can spread quickly, melanoma is highly treatable when caught early—making awareness and regular skin checks absolutely essential.

This highlights the importance of taking the time to really know your skin. Look for any new or changing moles, spots, or lesions.

Use the 𝗔𝗕𝗖𝗗𝗘’𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗮 as a guide:

𝗔 is for Asymmetry—one half doesn’t match the other.
𝗕 stands for Border—edges may be irregular or blurred.
𝗖 is for Colour—look for uneven shades of brown, black, red, white, or blue.
𝗗 represents Diameter—melanomas are often larger than 6mm.
𝗘 is for Evolving—any change in size, shape, or colour could be a warning sign.

Prevention is just as important. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen daily, wear protective clothing, and avoid tanning beds. Annual skin checks are crucial, especially if you have fair skin, a history of sunburns, or a family history of skin cancer.

Stay sun-safe, stay skin-aware, and encourage your loved ones to do the same.

14/05/2025

If you’re preparing for plastic surgery, quitting smoking and va**ng isn’t just recommended—it’s essential for a safe procedure and smooth recovery.

Why? Ni****ne and carbon monoxide impair blood flow and oxygen delivery, making it harder for your body to heal and significantly increasing the risk of post-op complications.

Here’s why quitting matters:

🔹 Reduced Blood Flow: Ni****ne narrows blood vessels, limiting oxygen and nutrients to tissues. This raises the risk of wound breakdown and tissue death (necrosis), especially in surgeries involving skin flaps.

🔹 Lower Oxygen Levels: Carbon monoxide binds to red blood cells, displacing oxygen and slowing tissue repair.

🔹 Delayed Healing: Less oxygen means slower wound closure, more scarring, and higher infection risk.

🔹 Increased Complications: Smokers are more likely to experience wound dehiscence (reopening), hematomas (internal bleeding), infections, and skin slough (loss of tissue due to poor circulation).

🔹 Surgery-Specific Risks: Procedures like rhytidectomy (facelift), abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), mastopexy (breast lift), and breast reduction are particularly affected due to their reliance on blood supply for skin healing.

🔹 Anesthesia Risks: Smoking increases the chance of breathing difficulties, pneumonia, blood clots, and poor oxygenation under anesthesia.

👉 Our advice: Quit smoking and va**ng at least 6 weeks before and after surgery. This gives your body the time it needs to restore circulation, improve oxygen levels, and heal effectively.

If you’ve been considering quitting, now is a meaningful time to take that step—not just for your surgery, but for your overall health moving forward.

*All surgical procedures carry risk. Discuss these risks with your surgeon to ensure you’re fully informed and have realistic expectations. Not all procedures are suitable for everyone, and individual results will vary.
