So for some reason, with these health funds - AHM, Defence, Navy and Peoplecare - the optical rebate expires on June 30. So if you are in one of those funds, you need to book in promptly and use your health fund rebate before it vanishes.

If you are in any other health fund, your rebate expires on December 31. So you don't have to rush. Except that you do, because time is passing relentlessly quickly and the end of the year will be here before you know it.

Lloyd is away for a couple of weeks in July. And then there are only 18 weeks between then and the silliness of December!

If you are not in a health fund, then you can get glasses whenever you want and there are no deadlines - other than needing to see properly.

Prior to 2006, there was no effective treatment for wet Macular Degeneration.
The macula is part of the retina, the light sensitive film at the back of the eye. The front of the eye focusses the light right onto the macula when we look at something directly.
Your macula has around 20 million light sensitive cells called photoreceptors.
20 million is more pixels than your 4K television, but densely packed into about a 1mm diameter area.
This is why we can have very detailed, high res vision.
But when the macula gets sick, it really messes up the central vision.

In wet macular degeneration, the layers are breaking down and fluid and/or blood can leak into the area.

Before 2006, people with this would notice distortion and blurry vision, but there was nothing useful that could be done.
The vision would deteriorate over months.

Fortunately smart people invented a treatment, a drug that could stabilise the disease and stop it from progressing.
Unfortunately, this drug needs to be injected directly into the eyeball, usually up under the top eyelid. It's no fun, but not as bad as people expect.
Most people need repeat injections, often every 4- 12 weeks.

This drug and it’s successor drugs have been a game changer. Instead of certain vision loss, people could keep reasonable vision for years.
I’m always grateful when there are treatments that can genuinely help.

When people developed age-related macular degeneration prior to 2001, there was nothing useful that anyone could do.
The dry type would cause slow but certain vision loss.
The wet type would cause fairly rapid damage and scarring of the macula.
Both types meant people could no longer read, recognise a face, drive or see any small detail.

In the early 2000’s a large study demonstrated that anti-oxidant supplements could slow the progression of dry macular degeneration. Later an even larger, independent study demonstrated even more conclusively what worked and what did not. Essentially, with dry MD, supplementing Vitamins C, E, Zinc, Copper, Lutein and Zeaxanthin at the right dose, would slow progression.

There is no doubt in my mind that this supplement treatment works. I have seen many patients with dry MD that have stayed stable for years longer than expected, taking these supplements.
People get even better results if they have a healthy diet, and are active.
The worst outcomes are with people who smoke, and va**ng will be no better.

Losing vision is never good, but at least we can help it happen as slow as possible. I’m always grateful when there are treatments and preventative action that i can recommend with confidence, having seen the effects over my 30 years.
