Have you experienced mental health-related stigma or discrimination? Have you seen it in your workplace or community? We want to hear from you.

Whether you have a personal lived experience, are a family member, carer or support person, provide services and supports, or are passionate about change for the better, we need your experience, expertise and guidance.

As many will know through personal experience, stigma and discrimination can have significant negative impacts for people, their carers, family, friends and others around them.

To help guide meaningful change in this area, the National Mental Health Commission has developed a draft national strategy to address mental health-related stigma and discrimination.

The Draft Strategy has now been released for public input and feedback.

The consultation period will be open until 1 February 2023. You can provide as much, or as little, feedback as you want, including through a short online survey.

The NSW Government has further increased its commitment to su***de prevention through a new five-year plan developed in consultation with communities across NSW.

The new Framework, prepared by the Mental Health Commission of NSW, spells out a comprehensive approach to su***de prevention, focusing on early intervention, post-su***de care and support, and aftercare and support – to shift the landscape and bring into sharper focus communities and people.

Commissioner Catherine Lourey said in developing the Framework, the voices of lived experience of su***de were heard through as many as 70 consultations together with a diverse group of passionate people, lived experience advocates, representatives from government agencies, non-government organisations and su***de prevention experts.

Join Deputy Commissioner Jenna Roberts and a panel of mental health and community leaders at Gingers for the R U OK? Day Rainbow Community Mental Health Sesh, Thursday 8 September, for a night chatting mental health in the q***r, rainbow community.

Discussion will take place on LGBTQIA+ mental health experiences, insights, services, support and what we can all do to help each other, and ourselves. Even though Soul Café is born and bred Novocastrian many of our volunteers come to us from other places…. Like one of our newest volunteers Justine. Justine is originally from Albury. She ran her own business for 20 years. She has three boys and loves the outdoors and her dog Echo.

Justine came to Soul after a life changing moment where she nearly died from a bad cycling accident. She took this as a warning sign to slow down, be resilient and overcome adversity.

What have you learnt from other guests and volunteers at Soul?
Soul gives our guests the opportunity to ‘just be’. As you a volunteer you can be open to yourself, there isn’t the pressure normal workplaces have. What you offer is accepted.

What would you say to others about volunteering at Soul?
Volunteering can be intimidating, come along and see how it rolls, you will be surprised at how the experience naturally evolves.

Thank you, Soul, for being here for guests and volunteers, it enriches the lives of both.
