Hunter Business Womens Network (HBWN) and Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club had a fabulous event!
I was so inspired from the evening.
The Yacht Club need a shout out for getting me a no alcohol glass of wine so I could feel like a princess.
The evening was about Women's Wellness at Work. Such a showcase of amazing women doing exceptional work in their professional lives. There were hilarious moments during really deep panel discussions about important topics.
Topics included women's specific illnesses such as ovarian and breast cancer, and endometriosis. There was talk about peri-menopause and menopause, sexual health, pregnancy, grief associated with pregnancy loss, birthing trauma, motherhood and careers, and all round mental health. There was talk about being a leader and balancing life. About having time out of a career to raise children, and dealing wth opinions from people about that choice. Also talk about how to lead well as a woman juggling their health in some more male dominant job areas.
Too often in the past woman have felt they need to suck it up and push through the pain and symptoms.
There was an acknowledgement too that sometimes women are their worst enemy by telling this exact same thing to themselves.
Often women are afraid of bringing such issues up with people at work as they are deemed too personal and might affect how they are treated.
It became apparent through the evening that what I thought was right. There is still a lot of work to be done in workplaces to better help women in the workplace.
For example - I still think we are working towards workplaces where women can talk openly and get the help they need during peri-menopause, which is now widely known about.
I am not convinced women can openly state they are taking time off for it?
But why not? These things can affect women both mentally and physically.
We are getting better about general mental health conversations, but personally I think we need to keep re-designing how we talk about women’s specific problems or illnesses. Women specific research is now being done in different areas, so we need to break down stigma and myths, educate, and know where to access appropriate help. To keep things real.
Just like I teach in all Mental Health courses, it's about having the courage to have vulnerable open conversations, being kind, helping ourselves and helping others. It is always about skill building to have the conversations well.
