Hunter Business Womens Network (HBWN) and Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club had a fabulous event!

I was so inspired from the evening.

The Yacht Club need a shout out for getting me a no alcohol glass of wine so I could feel like a princess.

The evening was about Women's Wellness at Work. Such a showcase of amazing women doing exceptional work in their professional lives. There were hilarious moments during really deep panel discussions about important topics.

Topics included women's specific illnesses such as ovarian and breast cancer, and endometriosis. There was talk about peri-menopause and menopause, sexual health, pregnancy, grief associated with pregnancy loss, birthing trauma, motherhood and careers, and all round mental health. There was talk about being a leader and balancing life. About having time out of a career to raise children, and dealing wth opinions from people about that choice. Also talk about how to lead well as a woman juggling their health in some more male dominant job areas.

Too often in the past woman have felt they need to suck it up and push through the pain and symptoms.
There was an acknowledgement too that sometimes women are their worst enemy by telling this exact same thing to themselves.
Often women are afraid of bringing such issues up with people at work as they are deemed too personal and might affect how they are treated.

It became apparent through the evening that what I thought was right. There is still a lot of work to be done in workplaces to better help women in the workplace.

For example - I still think we are working towards workplaces where women can talk openly and get the help they need during peri-menopause, which is now widely known about.
I am not convinced women can openly state they are taking time off for it?
But why not? These things can affect women both mentally and physically.

We are getting better about general mental health conversations, but personally I think we need to keep re-designing how we talk about women’s specific problems or illnesses. Women specific research is now being done in different areas, so we need to break down stigma and myths, educate, and know where to access appropriate help. To keep things real.

Just like I teach in all Mental Health courses, it's about having the courage to have vulnerable open conversations, being kind, helping ourselves and helping others. It is always about skill building to have the conversations well.

Message me for info about skill building to have these effective conversations in the workplace.

It's that time of year again.

Invest in staff.

Some workplaces are concerned about the costs of EAP and Workers Comp Claims. All Workplaces need to be on top of Psycho-social legislation.

MHFA is a tool to help people across all organisations in the 'prevention' and 'early intervention' stages of people's declining mental health.

Get staff trained in Mental Health First Aid so they can develop skills to help themselves and have skilled discussions with colleagues.

What's the harm in getting a quote for staff training to build into next years budget?

I'm hoping this post isn't taken to be about E-Bikes and our young people.

I'm hoping people can see what I saw last Weds.
All the goodness on a gorgeous morning.

I saw a massive amount of young people using their mode of transport to independently and willingly get to the beach about 6.30am.

I saw young people positively feeding their physical and mental health.

I saw them chatting together as they locked up their bikes and checked out the conditions of the surf. I saw smiles between friends as they ran down the beach to the water together.
I saw them all out in mass in the surf, doing a specific activity they love.
I assume there was some mindfulness being out in the surf, appreciating a sunrise and great surfing conditions. Soaking in the first sunlight of the day.
Just being in nature and being in community. Not thinking about the past or future but being present. I saw a few adults also chatting as they watched on.

As a teacher I would have loved to have taught these young people first thing in the morning. They had already done a lot for their mental and physical health before school even started.

To me this is a beautiful thing - Mental Health goodness for our young people right there at Dixon Park and Merewether. All the things we want for our young ones to stay well holistically on display. Thats what I saw.

Have a look over on Facebook or LinkedIn to see a wee interview I did with about my career and what shaped it! Here’s a wee snippet!
Shoutout to Nikki Nobilo! Nikki is a certified instructor with ! 💚

I asked her a few questions 👇

❓ What inspired you to start your business, and what was the biggest challenge in the early days?

💬 After losing someone very close to me/ us, and having gone through some personal life challenges, I took time to sit with grief, did a lot of inner work, set boundaries and changed my career direction to align with my re-found values. I now use my teaching roles, sales roles, life experiences and formal education to “Spread the love”. I do this through a variety of professional roles all based on educating people to help other people through care and kindness. I feel that the person I lost sits on my shoulder guiding me professionally and personally.

❓ What inspired you to start your business, and what was the biggest challenge in the early days?

💬 After losing someone very close to me/ us, and having gone through some personal life challenges, I took time to sit with grief, did a lot of inner work, set boundaries and changed my career direction to align with my re-found values. I now use my teaching roles, sales roles, life experiences and formal education to "Spread the love". I do this through a variety of professional roles all based on educating people to help other people through care and kindness. I feel that the person I lost sits on my shoulder guiding me professionally and personally.

❓ How do you handle setbacks and maintain motivation during tough times?

💬 Not like I used to. I was queen of self sabotage. I used to think self care was selfish and I always put everyone and everything else first. Nowadays I teach how self care is of uttermost importance, why it is important, and what it can look like. Self care is being kind to yourself during tough times. It is key to how you handle setbacks and tough times. I talk a lot about holistic health, and this can look different to each person. Personally this means I am a sunrise walker, I do saunas sometimes and I listen to guided meditations with my candles on. I try to get to yoga when I can. I make most food from scratch and I try to fast. I don’t drink alcohol. I maintain good sleep hygiene. I consciously spend quality time being present with those I love. I also plan travel as I thrive on having experiences booked. I basically use a range of tools to keep me on track with my mental and physical health. It's about bringing things back to basics. All these things help me stay motivated in life. I maintain it all through drive, passion and dedication to my clear goals professionally and personally. I set goals, I track them, I nail them. However, I don't punish myself for setbacks like I used to. We are all great at beating ourselves up. But it's a mind shift to look at these as learning opportunities and things to grown from.

❓ What is the best piece of advice you've ever received, and how has it shaped your journey?

💬 I'm into Music so always taking Inspiration from lyrics. This is a quote from Madonna that I grabbed onto when I was 15yrs and keep coming back to in my life journey. "If you want something bad enough, the whole world conspires to help you get it." It is absolutely true. If you want something bad enough, you are consciously more receptive to opportunities that can get you there, back your thoughts and choices, as well as align with your values. Decide, get focused, watch the magic flow, grab and action the magic. If anyone is curious - listen to ‘Higher Me' by Rob Riccardo. His music is inspirational and this particular song sums up everything I have spoken about here.

A couple of weeks ago I had the privilege of sharing the MHFA community course with the Forster Neighbourhood Centre Inc. staff and partners.

I travelled to the beautiful Forster and was immediately humbled by meeting people doing amazing things in their community in a wide range of ways. From working specifically with Youth, running community programmes, helping people in need and those in crisis, fundraising, working with other organisations, this group truly makes immediate positive impact in the community. The lived experience through personal and professional lives shone through when applying newly learned knowledge and skills that MHFA courses cover.

Due to such amazing work they have had help from other organisations such as the Local Mens Shed who made all their stand up and sit down desks for the hub. Kahi Simon Fund has helped a lot with funding for the MHFA course, other funding, and even made a huge outdoor seating area complete with plants where people can gather and chat.

The great leadership and drive and passion shown by Corinne Stephenson is evident in the dedication by staff, volunteers and community partners.
Thanks to Bradley Dunn at Lake Macquarie & Newcastle Su***de Prevention Network for the connection!

True warm fuzzies came over me as I drove home from this course. Gosh I love my job helping others to "Spread the Love."

Really stoked to get this recommendation yesterday- thank you Tanya Denny.
It’s on my LinkedIn page if you can’t read the small print!

It was such a great course and highly relevant for 10 staff employed to really understand and have the skills to apply to someone living with complex Mental Health Illnesses.

What do in the National Disability Insurance Agency space is truly inspirational and directly impactful.
