Breathing for Life Trial

Breathing for Life Trial A research study aimed at improving the health of pregnant women with asthma and their children. This study is no longer recruiting.

If you are a participant and would like to contact our study team call (02) 4042 0992 and talk to Jane. The Breathing for Life Trial (BLT) is a randomised trial of a new asthma management strategy which reduces asthma attacks among pregnant women. We hope to demonstrate that this strategy also improves outcomes for the newborn baby, and has long lasting benefits into childhood. The trial is currently recruiting at Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital. More study centres will be recruiting soon, so stay tuned for more information. If you are interested in participating or would just like more information please call Kelly on 02 40420130 or email breathingforlifetrial@gmail.com

Parents of neurodivergent children with asthma needed!

The University of Newcastle are interested in understanding the healthcare experiences of neurodivergent children when accessing support for their asthma, from the perspective of their parent/caregiver.

Are you:
➡️ a parent of a neurodivergent child with asthma?
➡️ aged 18 years or over?
➡️ a parent with access healthcare in Australia?

To participate, you would complete a 1-hour interview either on zoom or at the University of Newcastle Callaghan campus and short questionnaire.

It was a great honour to be nominated for Maitland’s Citizen of the Year award yesterday. The winner was Trevor Lynch, who is leading Maitland HealthStays - a fantastic initiative to help patients travelling long distances to access care at Maitland Hospital, by providing short term accommodation. Congratulations to Trevor!

Thanks so much to Ellen and little Rupert for talking about our research! Using inhaled corticosteroids (preventer medication) during pregnancy was associated with better lung function in the infant at 6 weeks of age

Is the smoke from the VIC fires making it harder for you to breathe or causing you to have asthma symptoms?

Asthma care is now more affordable for families.
Lower PBS co-payments and 60-day prescribing are helping reduce the cost of asthma preventer medicines, making day-to-day asthma management more affordable and convenient for Australians.

From 10 December 2025 to 31 January 2026, a temporary PBS Continued Dispensing Emergency Measure has been put in place to support people affected by the bushfire disaster in six Local Government Areas in New South Wales to continue to access their PBS subsidised medicines.

This means that under specific circumstances, pharmacists can dispense asthma medicines without a doctor's prescription.

The NSW Government’s Natural Disaster Declaration applies to the LGAs of:
➡️Central Coast
➡️Mid Coast
➡️Upper Hunter
➡️Muswellbrook
➡️Warrumbungle
➡️Dubbo

When its smokey, stay indoors to protect your lungs. Use your air conditioner on recirculation mode or an air purifier inside your home. Take your preventer every day as prescribed and always have your asthma medicine close by. If you wheeze, cough or have trouble breathing, follow your written Asthma Action Plan. Call the doctor or 000 (triple zero) if your asthma doesn't get better.

To help prepare for extreme weather and bushfire season, call our FREE 1800 ASTHMA (1800 278 462) service and speak with an Asthma Educator. https://buff.ly/EyqBDx3
