Breathing for Life Trial

Breathing for Life Trial A research study aimed at improving the health of pregnant women with asthma and their children. This study is no longer recruiting.

If you are a participant and would like to contact our study team call (02) 4042 0992 and talk to Jane. The Breathing for Life Trial (BLT) is a randomised trial of a new asthma management strategy which reduces asthma attacks among pregnant women. We hope to demonstrate that this strategy also improves outcomes for the newborn baby, and has long lasting benefits into childhood. The trial is currently recruiting at Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital. More study centres will be recruiting soon, so stay tuned for more information. If you are interested in participating or would just like more information please call Kelly on 02 40420130 or email breathingforlifetrial@gmail.com

Meet Professor Vanessa Murphy 👋

A Maitland local whose research is changing lives right here in the Hunter.

Vanessa is investigating how inflammation caused by asthma during pregnancy may affect the developing brains of babies, and how we can better support children and families earlier.

Thanks to the generous support of our donors, HCRF has been able to fund this vital work. That funding has already attracted more than $70,000 in additional grants, with Professor Murphy's team now preparing to apply for over $1 million more! 🔬

In 2024, 322 women and 156 men died from asthma in Australia. That means women are dying from asthma at more than twice the rate of men.

No death from asthma is acceptable, and this gender gap isn't new. Older women, in particular, remain at greater risk of severe outcomes, yet asthma care and funding often fail to reflect that.

We need a stronger national focus on prevention, improved access to medicines, and targeted support for the communities most impacted. Because asthma is not just a nuisance - it can be deadly.
