Despite no medical evidence to support the decision, some Australian hospitals are telling women they can’t access showers of baths during birth. Which is bu****it, double bu****it since many midwives of prominent stature and attainment have come out saying that they think it’s bu****it too (and many more agree but are unable to publicly say so, including midwives who are working in those hospitals making these decisions).
My personal response in short is this 🖕🏼Unlesa you can provide sound medical reasoning, let’s put this discussion under the ‘I Didn’t Ask For Your Opinion’ umbrella and do whatever the f**k we please aye?
Anyone who has birthed or attended birth knows that getting a labouring woman under or in warm water is one of the most effective and natural methods of pain relief. It also reduces the risk of severe perineal trauma and the need for an episiotomy while decreasing the length of labour.
This basic human right is being disallowed at the moment in some hospitals in Australia based on the Royal Aust & NZ College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists RANZCOG recommendations for it not be offered to women due to CV-19, despite there being no hard evidence to support why.
We can go to a public pool, a restaurant, a pub, a gym, nurses can wash patients but somehow women can only have 1 support person during labour and are now not able to use the shower or bath?
Australian College of Midwives (ACM) is calling for all hospitals to continue to provide the use of water immersion and showers for all pregnant women. You can read their response to the recommendations image in comments.
