What's the deal with Lisps?
A lisp is where certain sounds (mainly /s/ and /z/) are pronounced incorrectly due to the tongue being in the wrong spot. This error is one of the few that often persist into adulthood. There are 4 types, based on the tongue location.
- The most common is an interdental lisp. The tongue pokes between the teeth so 'sun' becomes 'thun'. Some children develop this lisp before the age of 4. If it is still happening after 4 years of age, it will likely need therapy to resolve.
- A lateral lisp is never developmentally appropriate, and should always receive speech therapy. It will not resolve on its own without help. A lateral lisp sounds very 'slushy' or 'wet'.
