Next weekend Alice (Little Movers Director & Physiotherapist) will be running City to Surf to raise awareness of Juvenile Arthritis. Alice’s 6yo son was diagnosed with Polyarticular Juvenile Arthritis last year after years of pain, stiffness and fatigue. Juvenile Arthritis is a serious and painful autoimmune disease with the potential to cause joint deformities and loss of vision if not diagnosed early and treated properly.

Juvenile Arthritis is not rare - it is one of the most common chronic childhood diseases (as common as Juvenile Diabetes!), yet it is poorly understood and as a result, many children have a very delayed diagnosis.

Accurate diagnosis has enabled Alice’s son, and many other children with Juvenile Arthritis, to start on medication that has significantly reduced pain and fatigue, prevented permanent joint damage, and enabled ongoing surveillance to monitor and prevent vision impairment. As a result of targeted treatment, he has gone from spending most of the time laying in bed in tears to being a happy child who is able to keep up with his friends most of the time!

At the moment, Juvenile Arthritis is grossly under-funded. Tasmania, ACT and the Northern Territory don’t have paediatric rheumatology teams, which means that families need to fly interstate to access the care they need. There is also a lack of awareness and training for healthcare practitioners to be able to recognise the symptoms of Juvenile Arthritis and make a timely referral to Paediatric Rheumatology. are working hard to change this so that children living with arthritis are diagnosed, and receive access to care, earlier.

Paediatric Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy for children in the Western suburbs of Melbourne. Clinic appointments and home/kinder/childcare/school/hydrotherapy sessions available. Registered NDIS providers.

Are you concerned that your child is delayed in achieving physical milestones such as rolling, sitting or walking? Does your baby have a preference to turn their head one way, and/or a flat spot on the back of their head? Does your child have a diagnosed condition or disability? Are you concerned about the way your child walks or moves? Our Paediatric physiotherapists support children to achieve optimal movement and physical development. We assess physical development and provide play-based exercise programs which are individually tailored to the child to maximise their ability to participate in daily activities.
