Sesame Oil
While you may know sesame oil mostly from Asian cooking - it's used for good reason. The health benefits of sesame are unmatched by any other base oil. Containing special bioactive components, like sesamin, sesaminol, and gamma-tocopherol, and fatty acids like oleic acid, linoleic acid, stearidonic acid and palmitoleic acid, it is also considered an important protein source. Its seeds contain more protein than meat (17%-40% vs. 18%-25% respectively), and three times more calcium compared with an equivalent quantity of milk.
Uniquely, compared to other vegetable oils, sesame oil is also more stable against oxidative rancidity due to the presence of distinctive tocopherols.
Consumption of sesame seeds shows noticable health benefits, but even its topical use has shown beneficial especially in photo-aged skin.
Sesame is not only Ayurveda's most revered oil, but also appears in Tibetan medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine.
If you're looking for a targeted oil or ingredient for dry, saggy Vata skin - sesame is your one-and-only base oil!
