Zonta Club of Northern Beaches What we do

At the Zonta Club of Northern Beaches we work to empower women through a variety of service projects and through collaboration with other women’s organisations. Current activities of our club include:
• Giving financial help to women and girls in our local community to enable them to continue their education when they would otherwise be unable to do so.
• Assembling simple birthing kits to be used in developing countries. These kits (with an education program) promote hygiene in childbirth, and assist in the prevention of associated infections, particularly tetanus - in association with the Birthing Kit Foundation Australia (www.bkfa.org.au/).
• Supporting the Mackellar Girls Z Club. Z Clubs are established to help high school students develop leadership skills, promote career exploration and encourage members to participate in community, school and international service projects.
• Assisting with the organisation of, and taking part in, the Australia Day Breakfast at Newport Beach.
• Making free breast care cushions for women who have undergone surgery for breast cancer. The cushion aids recovery by allowing comfortable sleep and rest as well as preventing hurt from bumps and discomfort from wearing seatbelts.
• Providing material and financial assistance to the local Women’s Refuge, and Northern Beaches Women’s Shelter. A member of the Northern Beaches Domestic Violence Network.
• Holding fundraising and fellowship events, including the annual Pittwater International Women’s Day Breakfast. Professional women who want to help other women in the local community and overseas, and who want to share in friendship and are keen for the opportunity to share their skills. Club members meet for dinner and Zonta business on the fourth Monday of each month . We welcome anyone interested in our club to come to a meeting.

The Sydney Morning Herald:

Five women killed this month alone. All knew their accused attackers. Systemic failures are costing women’s lives.

'Keeping women alive is everybody’s business. Here’s what we must do next' is an excellent opinion piece by Jenna Price in the The Sydney Morning Herald .

Jenna Price says "When are we going to understand that when a man hurts his partner, it’s not an accident. He means it. He really means it. Researchers tell us that there are eight steps on the way to murder. Eight signs. Eight opportunities to stop the violence.

We are spending January searching for reasons, searching for murderers, five women all killed this month. But are our bail laws really the problem? Sophie Quinn, Nerida Quinn, Velvet Pesu, and two poor bloody women, one in Victoria, one in Queensland, whose names we don’t even yet know. But this much we do know. Those women knew their accused murderers."

Thanks Jenna for engaging with frontline services, including Women’s Community Shelters, and for keeping domestic and family violence in the public conversation.

Zonta Australia
Zonta Australia stands with Zonta International. We share Zonta International’s concern regarding the U.S. withdrawal from key UN organizations and multilateral institutions that advance gender equality and human rights. Gender equality is fundamental to justice, security and sustainable progress. We join the call for global leaders to uphold their international commitments and strengthen the multilateral system.

Zonta International responds to U.S. withdrawal from multilateral institutions

Zonta International expresses its concern and disappointment in the decision by the Government of the United States to withdraw from, or disengage with, a number of key international organizations, conventions and treaties established under the auspices of the United Nations and the broader multilateral system.

Gender equality and inclusion is not optional. It is fundamental to justice, security and sustainable progress. We call on global leaders to uphold their international commitments and strengthen—rather than retreat from—the multilateral institutions that safeguard our shared future.

An Australia Day Breakfast on the Northern Beaches that has been running since the 1980s is now the last of its kind in the area, with the committee chairman saying the politicising of the day is the reason such events are dwindling.
Bert Payne Park at Newport has been home to the deeply rooted community event since January 26, 1988, with the community coming together to celebrate with all the old school favourites such as rides for the kids, thong throwing competitions with prizes and live music.
While controversies surrounding Australia Day have resulted in some councils moving away from breakfast celebrations, the chairman of the Newport Australia Day committee said the day meant “a hell of a lot” to him, and he was devastated their Australia Day breakfast was one of the last of its kind.”

We don't need a Royal Commission to know violence against women is a crisis. Rather, we should be asking why we're not acting on the information we have.

“All are equal before the law.”
Yet the scales still tip.

This International Women’s Day 2026, is a call to close the gap between promise and practice, where rights on paper become rights in reality

Until rights are equal in practice, our work to balance the scales continues.

We can’t be any clearer.

The NSW Government must increase core funding to specialist DFV services.

We can’t come close to meeting today’s crisis on a budget set a decade ago.

Goodwill is not a funding model.

Australia will hold a National Day of Mourning on Thursday 22 January 2026 to honour the victims of the Bondi Beach terrorist attack.

While it is not a public holiday, the day is recognised nationally as a time to pause and reflect together.

As a symbol of remembrance, we're encouraging institutions around Australia to illuminate on the night of Thursday 22 January.

If you would like to observe the day, there are simple ways to do so:
- observe one minute of silence on 7:01pm AEDT on 22 January
- come together with family and friends to share a meal and spend time with people of all faiths and backgrounds
- leave a candle on your doorstep or windowsill as a symbol of remembrance, mourning and solidarity with the Jewish community
- do a good deed or 'mitzvah' for Bondi bit.ly/One-Mitzvah
- share a message of condolence online bit.ly/BB-CondolenceBook
