The Department of Health is currently developing a 20-Year Preventive Health Strategy for Tasmania – and are seeking the expertise of people who are interested in women’s health and wellbeing.

Health doesn’t start in a clinic – it starts where life does. Things like safe housing, supportive family environments, green spaces, food, transport, income, social connection, and time to rest all shape more than 70% of our health outcomes. Right now, too many people are getting physically or mentally unwell because of systems that don’t support wellbeing. But most of that illness can be prevented.

Lemon Balm and Fennel Helping Post Menopausal Women With Sleep Disorders

A recent double placebo clinical trial in Iran found a combination of Lemon Balm (Melissa officianalis) and Fennel(Foeniculum vulgaris) had a significantly positive effect in improving sleep disorders for post menopausal women. After 8 weeks , the women taking the lemon balm/fennel herbal had significantly better results than those in the placebo group or those taking citalpram. No adverse effects were reported in the herbal extract group, while there were 2 reports of nausea and headache for those taking citalopram.
Poor sleep patterns can be exacerbated by the night sweats, palpitations, increased pain perception and other physical and psychological factors for these women, so anything that can bring relief would be very welcome. But poor sleep can affect anyone at any life stage, and I do use lemon balm for this......it's great for rebuilding the nerve system. I also add vervain and sometimes lavender, but only to those who like the smell of lavender as it is strong when used as a herbal extract. For men in particular, I find a mix of lemon balm with lime flower and magnolia can work really well. It should be noted that none of these herbs are actually sedative... they are relaxants, proving that you don't have to take something strong to improve sleep patterns.

Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus)

Bladderwrack is also know as kelp, as there are many species that grow in the oceans throughout the world so the species harvested for use in supplements and food may differ from what is harvested here in Australia. It gets its common name from the 'bubble ' air vessels you see on the plant. For us, Fucus vesiculosus is the main species people are scavenging from the beach and using as fertiliser and it's the main species used for food, supplements and herbal extracts. It is used mainly as a nutritive herb, an alterative (blood and lymph cleanser) and a metabolic stimulant. It has also been used as an anti-rheumatic and anti-inflammatory herb, either by being taken internally or being included in bandaging. This seaweed is one of the first sources of iodine , discovered in 1812 and was used heavily for goitre and under active thyroid glands. If you suspect you have any of these problems please do not go out and blindly start eating heaps of seaweed or taking supplements...always see your GP and get the proper testing done before you self diagnose and prescribe!
Many studies are currently being undertaken globally on seaweed for the different compounds in the plants and one that involves the Fucus genre is the compound Fucoid and Fucoxanthins. Studies involving the use of this seaweed for osteoporosis and the remineralisation of bones, reducing osteoporotic symptoms and the decreasing of viability, survival and invasions of cells that trigger rheumatoid arthritis.
There are also pilot studies and cell based studies being done on their use with the immune system but large scale studies are yet to be completed.

“The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” Aristotle
It’s a truth herbalists have long understood.

At The Herbal Extract Company we craft full-spectrum liquid extracts that honour the complexity of the whole plant not just isolated actives. Because traditional herbal medicine isn’t built on single constituents but on the synergy of many.

Whole plant extracts preserve the complex interplay of constituents that nature designed to work together. This chemical complexity is what makes herbs effective and also what science still struggles to fully explain.

Yet in clinical practice we see the results. It’s this synergy that underpins true therapeutic activity. 🌿

Seaweed as Food

Seaweed has a long history as a food in most coastal populations globally. We know it now mostly through Japanese cuisine but it has 14,000 year history as a food in Chile and was used by indigenous Australians. Despite the large amount of immigration of Irish people to Australia, by choice or deportation, their use of seaweed in food didn't seem to be transported with them and it is only now with the ideas of foraging, or wild food, and cross overs of cultural cooking that we are looking as 'sea vegetables' as a viable food option.
Seaweeds can be classified as brown, red or green. All of them contain antioxidants, iron, essential fatty acids and macro and micronutrients. People on thyroid medications should take care of how much they consume as iodine levels may affect their reaction to medication. Most contain a good amount of protein, but some can be limited in cysteine and lysine content. They are also a source of dietary fibre (one seaweed in Britain is known as gutweed).
We have sea lettuce, Ulva lactura, growing in Tasmanian waters, as well as wakame (this species is introduced). It's found on rocks near the shore or in subtidal rock pools and has a mild, savory flavour with a dry mass protein content of 25%. You should be very sure of what you're harvesting before you eat it though. Wild foraging also comes with the risk of eating contaminated food...just because the water looks clear doesn't mean it isn't polluted.
Seaweeds are interesting as their nutritional content can vary due greatly depending on location, habitat, daylight length and seasonal changes. So the same plant can be slightly different in composition even if it's just growing in the next coastal bay. This makes studying them difficult as well as using them in large amounts for food or supplements. But there is ongoing investment in growing them in large 'forests' to be used as food or in industry and a combatting climate change, giving greater uniformity and consistency for study and as a food.

Tui Balms are back
These are some of the massage balms I use and now you can take them home. They are a great body moisturiser, especially for areas that need some protection from the elements. Also the arnica oil in them is great for aches and pains, so if you've done too much gardening and your hands are sore, these are ideal. Likewise, if you have been doing a lot of walking or running and your feet or the front of your legs are sore (shin splints) the arnica will help out here too.
If you're feeling a 'fragile' or vulnerable I suggest you use the forest blend. Wood essential oils have been use traditionally across time and cultures to help a person feel 'fortified' and strong, a great tool for grounding also.

Lipoedema Awareness Month is kicking off 1st June!

Did you know that lipoedema affects at least 11% of women. However, due to the lack of awareness of it and understanding, it’s often being mistaken for lymphoedema or obesity. As a result it is believed a significant number of cases go undiagnosed.

Why it Matters for Early Diagnosis?
Early intervention in conservative management to slow progression
Lifestyle changes to reduce inflammation
Getting support for emotional and mental wellbeing
Knowing you are not at fault.

Get your Lipoedema jumper or top from us to show your support and help spread the word of lipoedema to those unaware of the condition. Click here: www.lipoedema.org.au/apparel
