Hip arthritis :
Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage that covers the hip joint surfaces, becomes worn and inflamed, causing stiffness and pain. Pain is usually felt in the front of the hip and groin and may radiate along the front of the thigh.
It can be to related to some childhood hip conditions, hence it is important to take hip pain in children seriously. If your child is limping due to hip pain, you should seek advice from your GP or osteopath who will most likely refer for an X-ray to exclude serious conditions such as:
- Perthes
- Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis
- Transient Synovitis
- Septic Arthritis
Another condition which should not be missed in childhood is Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH). Babies are screened for this in the newborn phase to assess for any clicking in the hip joint, asymmetry of buttock folds or thigh creases, or altered leg positioning. Hip ultrasound is regularly performed to check for DDH. If not treated in infancy, this condition will likely lead to an earlier onset of hip osteoarthritis.
