A visual inspection or basic history alone isn’t enough as surface varicose veins are often just the tip of the iceberg. They are commonly fed by deeper incompetent veins higher in the thigh or groin, where faulty valves cause backward pressure.

A venous ultrasound is a key diagnostic tool that allows your vein doctor to:

Accurately identify the veins responsible for symptoms
Trace visible veins back to their deeper origin
Ensure treatment targets the source of the vein problem, not just its surface effects

If underlying veins aren’t treated, new varicose will often develop nearby. This is one of the most common reasons for recurrence following superficial only treatment.
