Co-regulation is a critical part of the healthy development of your child’s nervous system. It is the process by which a calm, well regulated person (generally a parent) helps influence the development of a calm, well regulated nervous system in a child.

This is one of the ways your child’s nervous system registers that it is ‘safe’.

That is why it’s so important to pay attention to how much stress you are holding.

Co-regulation runs much deeper than what you say, it’s about how you are being.

A nervous system that’s learned to stay on high alert, shut down, or which swings between the two doesn’t just switch off with age. It adapts to life from within that dysregulated neurological context.

These early patterns don’t disappear unless they are addressed. They might become more refined or more hidden, but eventually they become the lens through which a child experiences the world as they grow into adulthood.
What is far more common is that as children grow they learn to mask what’s happening underneath. They learn what’s expected of them. They learn to ‘cope’. All the while working hard beneath the surface to manage a system that doesn’t quite feel safe.

This is about understanding patterns.
Because the beautiful thing about the nervous system is that it’s not fixed. It’s shaped by experience, connection, and support.

When we meet these early patterns with the right kind of input: gentle, consistent, regulating, we’re not just helping in the moment. We’re changing the trajectory of how they will grow and mature.

We’re teaching their system what safety feels like.

And that’s something they carry with them for life.

Parent often ask us this question.
Every child can benefit from a check-up (much like a dental check), but if your child has any health challenges (asthma, chronic fatigue, eczema, recurrent colds, etc) or a neuroregulatory diagnosis (ADHD is a good example) then we recommend they get assessed.

Checking their posture is also a great place to start and can be done at home, especially if they complain of tension or aches and pains. It’s important to recognise that kids are not designed to hold high levels of tension.

Things like a forward leaning head (away from their centre of gravity), tight or uneven shoulders, ‘ropey’ muscles along their spine, uneven hips, slouching, or poor coordination are important early signs.

For older kids, the stresses of school, especially Years 11 & 12, are important times to help them better focus and manage the emotional load and pressures of the HSC.

We’re not designed to hold tension for long periods of time, and nor are children.

If your child is holding tight, it gives us a sensitive indication of how well their nervous system is able to regulate more broadly.
This includes their;
emotional regulation
attention & learning
coordination
and regulation of the body’s systems for digestion, elimination and immunity.

Spinal Somatics gently improves and optimises nervous system regulation to affect every aspect of your child’s health.

🧡 Why we see kids:
The heart of what we do is help a child’s nervous system better regulate.

A dysregulated nervous system negatively impacts your child’s:
Mood & behaviour
Posture/Tension
Breathing
Sleep & Rest
Learning
Attention
Digestion
Immune System
And causes changes which lead to lifelong imbalances and problems.

Regular adjustments keep them in harmony from birth to adulthood.

Something different in the office last week! Stephen hosted a small group of chiropractors and chiropractic students to talk about Spinal Somatics and run through a hands-on workshop.
It was great see their enthusiasm to learn!

The Stages of Stress we work with every day

• Stage 1 – Compensation •
This occurs when our healthy adaptive responses to short term stress remain on for extended periods of time, but our ‘reserve’ capacity remains high.

Towards the latter stages of Compensation symptoms associated with overload often begin but remain infrequent and short lived.

• Stage 2 – Dysfunction •
This occurs when your body can no longer compensate for the sustained changes caused by ongoing stress. Individual body systems begin to dysfunction and tissues are physically overloaded causing inflammation and pain. Symptoms progressively build with repeat episodes in this stage.

• Stage 3 – Dysregulation •
In this stage one or more systems in your body can no longer self-regulate, a basic requirement for health. Because of this, diagnosed conditions appear in this stage (if systems were continuing to self-regulate there would be nothing to diagnose).

Symptoms become constant or severe.

• Stage 4 – Breakdown •
This occurs when multiple systems break down or fail.

Go gentle.

Keep creating the conditions for healing and let time do the heavy lifting.

Healing from trauma requires patience and compassion for yourself.

Part of the job of your Sympathetic nervous system is to inhibit your ability to process emotion.

If a bear is running at you, you don’t want to be searching for your feelings. Your SNS shuts them down so you can still act rather than being overwhelmed.

The problem comes when we stay stressed, often for months or years. That compartmentalising and disconnecting from emotion becomes our default state.

It’s common when you begin getting adjusted to notice old or uncomfortable emotions surfacing as you begin to process them and let go.

When this happens change becomes much easier, and your resistance to positive emotions also reduces – letting more of the good stuff in.
