Part of the job of your Sympathetic nervous system is to inhibit your ability to process emotion.

If a bear is running at you, you don’t want to be searching for your feelings. Your SNS shuts them down so you can still act rather than being overwhelmed.

The problem comes when we stay stressed, often for months or years. That compartmentalising and disconnecting from emotion becomes our default state.

It’s common when you begin getting adjusted to notice old or uncomfortable emotions surfacing as you begin to process them and let go.

When this happens change becomes much easier, and your resistance to positive emotions also reduces – letting more of the good stuff in.

The progression of stress from acute to chronic

Stage 1 – Compensation
Stage 2 – Dysfunction
Stage 3 – Dysregulation
Stage 4 – Breakdown

In a healthy state our response to stresses is short lived and to an appropriate degree. It’s only when the residue of unresolved stress or trauma begins to accumulate that these healthy responses become exaggerated, chronic and occur to inappropriate stimulus.

The progression from acute to chronic stress follows a predictable pathway.

This tension aggregates around the spine which is the body’s central channel, and which houses the central nervous system.

When we’re working with this system the most sensitive areas are at each end – the cranial bones and upper neck, and the sacrum and pelvis (more on the reasons for this another post).

We always want to work with children while their nervous system and body is in the early, functional range of stress. This is before these loads build into changes associated with compensation, dysfunction or dysregulation.

The reason we work so gently is because the goal is to restore internal safety (as opposed to elevated stress) and help their nervous systems better self-regulate. Reduced physical tension and other beneficial changes happen as an expression of this change.

Safety vs Familiarity after Trauma

When you have experienced trauma, your brain can mistake what is familiar for what is safe.

We need internal safety to self-regulate and safety in relationships to co-regulate.

But often after trauma similar kinds of harmful or unhealthy situations and relationships repeat in cycles. It becomes difficult to break.

Working towards improved nervous system regulation helps us navigate the difference as we become aware of what safety feels like internally, and less hijacked by unhealthy emotional patterning.

This coming Monday will be Louren’s last shift before taking a break during August, and she only has a couple of spaces left if you’d like to see her before she goes!
She’ll be back to her usual Monday afternoon / Saturday morning hours from September 1st.

That means during August we’ll be open for Stephen’s shifts from Tuesday at 1pm through to early Friday morning.

Hanh will also be available for acupuncture on Friday mornings and Saturday afternoons (bookings are available on our website).

Call us on 9519 4729 or email@us at info@newtowncommunitychiropractic.com.au if you’d you like one of Louren’s Monday appointments before she heads off 🇫🇷

We store a lot of who we are and a lot of what we've been unable to let go of in our spine and body.

We get so many questions about this we put together this poster. It's beautifully designed by Petra and framed locally by Rococo Framing in Enmore. It makes a perfect pair with our nervous system poster by !
We kinda love it...
