Shoulder dislocation is a painful injury! It can either be a straight forward dislocation where the ligaments and capsule have been overstretched or there may be other structures damaged at the same time. Proper rehabilitation and strengthening of the rotator cuff muscles to prevent recurrence is essential!

Think you don’t need to exercise? Think again

Need a reason to exercise?

This study looked at how exercise can preserve muscle mass.
Here they compare a 74-year old sedentary man and a 70-year old triathlete, and the difference in fat and muscle tissue is extreme.

What?!

It’s true. I have seen plenty of extremely strong and fit people with poor strength in their core and stabilisers. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you’re strong and won’t get injured. Strength in your prime movers is important. But strength in your stabilisers takes it next level and creates that stable base for them to work from.

Still don’t believe me? Come and try a Pilates reformer class at Hands On Allied Health

Kids can complain of aches and pains too. This is my daughter who loves to do all the things us Physio’s dislike. Like rolling her ankles, sitting with her hips rotated, crazy head stands......
Active kids can do with maintenance just the same as adults. Some pains can be related to growth, others to injury and everything in between. Sometimes a trip to he Physio to figure it out is just what’s needed

It might be that simple! Or not. Then you need to see a professional to decide.

Sometimes... it’s just that easy! 😊

And sometimes not 😉
Some people need to move more, some need to stop “poking the bear”.
There are a lot of factors that can influence pain. 🤓👍

The intervertebral discs are our shock absorbers for the spine. Anyone who’s ever experienced back pain will tell you how crippling it can be. Looking after the discs is so important. Learning how to move effectively, being aware of our posture and staying active all help. Talk to a health professional who can advise you what will best suit you. And of course you’d never regret PILATES.

Let’s face it, there is always something new coming out. A new fitness trend or treatment modality, a new ‘miracle cream’ or expensive new machine..... I’m not discounting any of those things. But what means more are the tried and tested things. The things that are backed by the proper research and have stood the test of time. Old is not always boring and newer is not always best......

Whether you’ve got a 6 pack or not, your transverse abdominis may not be strong. It’s the most important abdominal muscle. It helps support your back, aids your posture, has a connection with your pelvic floor, gives you a flat stomach among other things. Get a physio to show you how to really activate your abdominals and unlock the real power of your ABS

Do you sit a lot?
The QL is a common source of low back pain. It is a back muscle, hip muscle and helps breathing but can become tight and aggravated without attention.

What is functional training/ functional rehabilitation/ functional exercise?
It used to be that we strengthened specific muscles in isolated exercises and single plain movements. While this is still very important, functional exercise ensures that we retrain the muscles and movements in a way that is relevant to everyday life. It means that not only are you working multiple muscles at the same time, you are challenging the muscles/joints in those positions where injuries or re-injury is likely to happen. It makes the stability muscles work more and it also makes training a whole lot of fun!
All my clients know how I don’t like to leave any body parts out and there is always room for the Pilates circle! 😂
