This beautiful story was shared with me by one of our Sing to Thrive Healing Hub members, and it’s a powerful reminder of how important singing really is.
In Minneapolis, people have been gathering in the streets — singing together to channel grief, calm fear, and support their community during uncertain times. What began with just a handful of voices quickly grew into hundreds… then thousands.
This is the power of singing. It brings people together.
It helps regulate emotion., It shifts energy from fear to hope.

Hi Julia - You may have heard some of what is happening in the US with immigration agents in large US cities, and most recently in Minneapolis, Minnesota ( where I grew up and have family still living). One of the beautiful things that is happening is a group (instagram account singingresistancetc) has been taking to the streets with song - providing a way for people to channel their grief, anger, frustration as well as care for the neighbors. It has also helped to shift the energy and has helped things remain peaceful. They walk through the streets singing to neighbors too afraid to come out, singing songs like "Hold on, Hold on, my dear one, here comes the dawn" or "you do not carry this all alone, you do not carry this all alone, this is way too big for you to carry this on your own, so you do not carry this all alone", other songs about how you belong, about loving their neighbors, etc. They sing in english and spanish ( not sure about other languages). They sing even with temps around -20F/-20C. They began with a handful of people, a few days later there were 300, 4 days later there were 600 people. Last weekend around 1500 gathered for a vigil in a local church to sing. Other groups are popping up all over ( across the state and the country) to sing their songs in their own communities and to stand in solidarity with those in Minnesota. I thought you would appreciate this very palpable example of the power of song and the healing it can bring to a community in crisis.
