Ten years ago this week, I took a leap of faith and opened my practice at Noosa Hospital. At the time, it meant moving away from family and friends, and a new beginning with a young family in a place where we knew very few people. A decade later I am very grateful for the support of everyone who welcomed us and helped me to grow my practice into what it is today.
My sincere thanks to Ramsay Noosa Hospital, who placed their trust in a young female surgeon at the beginning of her career, with the opportunity and support needed to become established.
To the nurses and team at Noosa Hospital, I thank you for your dedication and for looking after my patients with compassion and professionalism; as well as your support of me personally.
I am thankful to the many specialists and specialist providers with whom I have had the privilege to work over the years. Your collegiality and support have played an important part in my professional journey.
I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to the many General Practitioners who have shown confidence in me and in our practice through your referrals and ongoing support.
A particularly special tribute goes to my late colleague, Dr Alan Smith, who was one of my greatest supporters. Without his mentorship, guidance, and belief in me, I would never have had this opportunity in Noosa. His devotion to his patients and his deep love for the Noosa community left a lasting impression on me as a young doctor, and those lessons have stayed with me throughout my career.
To my wonderful staff — thank you for standing beside me throughout this journey. You have carried yourselves with compassion and professionalism in work that is so often touched by fear and uncertainty. The care you show to our patients is noticed and hugely appreciated. I also thank you for the special care you show towards me day to day, looking after me personally so I can focus on my patients. This practice would simply not be what it is without you.
A big thank you to my patients. Over the past ten years, it has been my privilege to care for over 30,000 patients, including in the last 5 years just under 500 on their breast cancer journey. To be entrusted with your care at some of the most vulnerable moments in your lives is a responsibility I have always held with great humility. Thank you for the trust you have placed in me as your surgeon.
And finally, to my family. To my husband who has been my number one supporter since medical school, and challenges me to think outside the box in how I deliver care. And to my boys who have had to sometimes share me with my work, but who I know are very proud of their mum and her work. Simon, Flynn and Darcy – all my love and heartfelt thanks
This ten-year milestone is one I celebrate with gratitude and excitement for the future. It has been a privilege to serve this community, and I look forward to continuing to provide care in the years ahead.
