I AM NOT A RUNNER” 🏃‍♀️👟

I realised that this is what I say to myself and it’s how I describe myself to others.

As a psychologist, I teach my clients about growth mindset everyday…… but today I realised my internal dialogue about my own ability to exercise was as fixed as it gets. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Today I decided to take my own advice & am now going to tell myself
“I may not be the runner I want to be just YET - but at least I AM running. This still makes me a runner”🏃

Today I celebrated that I was moving my body …even when I didn’t want to…..even when my mind gave me a hundred excuses.

This is progress for me.

This is the good stuff I am learning from the amazing team at Exercise Matters @ Noosa Mind & Body Allied Health Hub

Do yourself a favour & book in a session today to discover how you can learn to move your body in a way that works FOR YOU!

PS - I am also loving the Coach Bennett guided runs on the Nike Run Club app! Highly recommend downloading this app if you are just starting out on your running journey. 👍🏃‍♀️

Right now QLD is being hit hard! First it was (& still is) the impact of the pandemic and now the floods! ….and it is only March!! There is no denying that Queenslanders are a resilient bunch, but 2022 could knock down even the most buoyant person!

Following a natural disaster like a flood, it is completely normal to experience psychological & emotional distress - even long after the danger of the floods has passed.

Research tells us that a majority of people who experience a traumatic event like a flood will recover over time with the support of family and friends. However for some, the impact can be long lasting and can begin to negatively affect their physical & emotional well-being and interpersonal relationships.

This distress (although uncomfortable and unpleasant), is a normal part of recovery & finding safe and healthy ways to express & discuss your experience is a key part of healing from such a traumatic event. Shutting away your difficult thoughts & feelings is a bit like shoving clothes in a cupboard when the door doesn’t stay shut! Speaking with a professional like a psychologist can be likened to taking the clothes out and re-folding them to regain a sense of order (about the experience).

Speaking with a professional can help you identify, label, understand, anticipate and manage overwhelming emotional & physical reactions so that they don’t feel so huge and unpredictable.

Our team of Psychologists & our Relationship Counsellor at Noosa Mind & Body can help you & your family with your mental wellbeing during these challenging times.

I absolutely love this post from Karen Young at “Hey Sigmund”

We will never get rid of their anxiety but we don’t need to. Anxiety is a feeling, not a truth. It can be a persuasive little beast, but it isn’t always accurate. In fact, it rarely is. Too often, it sends out warning signals that feel like stop signs. The important message for our young ones (all of us) is this: ‘You don’t need to wait for your anxiety to go away before you do hard things, because even when you feel so anxious, and so small, there will be more brave inside you than you will ever need. The greatest truth of it all my darling, is that even when you feel anxious, you can do brave.’♥️

The conversations matter. Sometimes it’s not one big conversation but lots of little ones over and over that make the magic happen. One of the reasons I wrote Hey Warrior was to help with these conversations and to turn anxiety into an ally. When we make sense of the symptoms, and when kids understand what anxiety is and why it feels the way it does, it helps them feel bigger in its presence. It helps open the way for them to feel anxious and do brave - for them to ‘move with’.

This month of October at we proudly promote Qld Mental Health Week & the National Mental Health Month to show the importance of prioritising mental health & to start having meaningful conversations about mental wellness.

These events encourage all of us to reflect on our own (& others) state of mental health - regardless of whether we may have a lived experience of mental illness or not. In fact, it is estimated that half of all Australians will experience a mental health condition during their lifetime. One in five of us is likely to be suffering right now. Our mental health affects how we think, feel, behave, work and play. It also influences how we relate to others & the choices we make.

Just like our physical health, our mental health can fluctuate. Everything that is valuable requires nurturing & taking care of.... mental health and well being is no different. Now more than ever we must stay connected and work together to prioritise mental health, acknowledge that it is okay not to be okay, and to fight the stigma around mental health.

If you want October to be the start of living the life you want for yourself, please access the resources in this post or check out our website to see how one of our clinicians can help you on your journey to mental wellness.
