Is your child’s backpack too heavy? 🎒

Many children carry school bags that are heavier than their bodies are designed to manage for long periods of time. Over time, this may contribute to changes in posture, shoulder or neck discomfort, and fatigue.

A few simple things to check:
• The bag should ideally be no more than ~10–15% of your child’s body weight
• Both shoulder straps should be used (not slung over one side)
• The bag should sit close to the back and not hang below the hips
• Heavier items packed closest to the spine
Small adjustments can make a big difference to comfort during the school day.

If you’re unsure whether your child’s backpack is appropriate for them, our fabulous chiros can assess your child’s school bag, posture and load to provide general guidance.

Posture isn’t just something to think about when we’re sitting! It’s all day, every day 💙

It’s how you stand at the kitchen bench.
How you carry your baby on your hip.
How you feed, scroll, drive, work and sleep.

Small positions, repeated often, can either support your body… or slowly add tension over time.

✨ Think tall but relaxed
✨ Soften your ribs and stack them over your pelvis
✨ Share the load (swap sides when holding little ones!)
✨ Take movement breaks — your body loves variety

Posture isn’t about being “perfect” — it’s about awareness and giving your nervous system and joints the best environment to function well.
