Did you know that 10–15% of pregnancies show a low-lying placenta at the 18–20 week scan, but by full term, only 0.5% still have this issue?

The placenta moves as your uterus grows, and often “low-lying” early on resolves naturally. Ultrasound checks the placenta’s location and distance from the cervix, helping your doctor plan for a safe delivery — whether vaginal or caesarean if needed.

➡️ Most early low-lying placentas self-correct, so there’s usually no cause for alarm.
➡️ Re-checks are often done in the third trimester to ensure everything is in the right place for birth.

Amniocentesis isn’t your typical pregnancy test—it’s a specialised diagnostic tool that provides valuable insights into your baby’s genetic and chromosomal health.

At Ultrasound Care, we help you decide if this test is right for you, based on your age, family history, screening results, or previous pregnancies. Using precise ultrasound guidance, a small sample of amniotic fluid is safely collected—without touching your baby—and analysed.

This test is typically offered to parents who:

● Have a higher risk of chromosomal conditions like Down syndrome
● Prefer a definitive diagnostic result over a screening
● Have a family history of genetic or metabolic conditions

Performed after 15 weeks, amniocentesis is tailored to your pregnancy journey. 💜

Speak with your health provider today to understand your options.

Placenta accreta occurs when the placenta grows too deeply into the wall of the uterus. This can make delivery more complex and increase the risk of heavy bleeding during birth.

Ultrasound plays an important role in detecting placenta accreta during pregnancy. Detailed imaging can help identify signs that the placenta is attaching abnormally, allowing your obstetric team to plan delivery safely and in the right hospital setting.

At Ultrasound Care, pregnancy ultrasounds help provide the information doctors need to support careful planning for a safer birth for both mother and baby.

Pelvic pain. Irregular periods. Heavy bleeding.

When something doesn’t feel right during the teenage years, it’s important to understand why.

Our latest article, “Teen Pelvic Ultrasound: What It Shows and Why It’s Done,” explains how ultrasound safely assesses the uterus and ovaries — without radiation — and why adolescent scans require a specialised, thoughtful approach.

For many families, ultrasound provides reassurance.

For others, it helps identify structural or developmental concerns early.

If you’re a parent of a teen navigating puberty, periods, or pelvic pain, this is essential reading.

Ovulation tracking apps predict.

Follicle growth.
Endometrial lining.
The exact moment your body is ready.

If you’ve been timing everything “right” but still not seeing two lines, it might be time to look closer.

In this video, we explain how ultrasound monitoring takes the guesswork out of ovulation and helps optimise your chances of conception.

Save this or share it with someone who’s trying to fall pregnant.

Endometriosis affects around 1 in 7 Australian women, yet many are unsure what best-practice diagnosis and treatment look like.

A recent in-depth report by ABC News, supported by an episode of Four Corners, explores the current evidence on endometriosis care — and what experts believe women should know.

We’re proud that our Medical Director, Dr Karen Mizia, was quoted in the article and featured in the program, with filming at our Macquarie Street rooms alongside our Chief Sonographer, Row.

As a specialist in gynaecological ultrasound and former President of the Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine, Dr Mizia highlights key evidence-based principles aligned with the latest guidance from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists:

• Medical imaging should be the first step in diagnosis
• Laparoscopic surgery is not required as an initial diagnostic tool
• A normal scan does not automatically rule out endometriosis
• Treatment decisions should be individualised and carefully considered

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach — care should be thoughtful, evidence-informed, and centred around you.

Endometriosis can show up in different ways — and many women experience only one or a few symptoms, while some have none at all. The most common sign is pelvic pain, often linked to periods, but it can also occur at other times in the cycle.

Symptoms may include:
• Lower abdominal or pelvic pain
• Pain before or during periods
• Lower back pain
• Pain when passing urine or opening bowels
• Pain during in*******se or internal exams
• Heavy or irregular periods
• Fertility challenges
• Occasional bowel bleeding

Diagnosis can be delayed because symptoms often overlap with other conditions. Targeted ultrasound — including assessment for deep infiltrating endometriosis — can play an important role in investigation.

If symptoms are ongoing or affecting your quality of life, speak with your GP or gynaecologist about appropriate assessment.

Preeclampsia is a serious pregnancy condition linked to high blood pressure and organ stress — and it can develop with little warning. If not recognised early, it can create real risks for both mum and baby.

In this video, we break down what preeclampsia is, the symptoms to watch for, and why regular prenatal check-ups are so important. Awareness and early action matter.

Ultrasound Care turns 21

Ultrasound Care began way back in 1996, in a single borrowed consulting room at the RPA Medical Centre in Newtown.

Dr Philippa Ramsay was an obstetrician/gynaecologist who sub-specialised in ultrasound. She had worked in other private ultrasound practices and as the first female O&G Ultrasound specialist in Sydney, she could see how it could be done better, with more understanding of the women's needs.

She was well supported by her colleagues who wanted their patients treated with sensitivity and care. She became busier and was soon joined by highly skilled sonographers and specialists who had a similar ethos.

The sonographers Mary McPhail and Rowena Gibson are still at Ultrasound Care 20 years later!!
