A pelvic ultrasound is one of the most effective ways to assess gynaecological health. Using sound waves emitted from a transducer, it creates detailed images of the uterus, ovaries, and surrounding pelvic structures.

Our team of trained gynaecologists and sonographers use the latest ultrasound technology to ensure the clearest images and most accurate assessment.

How it works:

A trans-abdominal scan is performed through the tummy, usually requiring a comfortably full bladder to get the best view.

For higher-resolution images of smaller structures, a trans-va**nal ultrasound may be recommended. In this case, the transducer is gently placed in the va**na, with privacy, comfort, and guidance ensured throughout the procedure.

Ultrasound is painless, safe, and highly effective for evaluating pelvic health. Our team is here to guide you every step of the way.

Ultrasound scans play a crucial role in fertility planning and assessing infertility. Using 3D ultrasound, our experienced team of obstetricians and sonographers can provide detailed insights into your reproductive health — which is why your doctor may have referred you.

How it works:
Most fertility scans are performed va**nally to ensure accurate information. While some women may experience slight discomfort, the procedure is not painful.

What we learn:
➡️ The uterus, uterine lining, cavity shape, and ovaries
➡️ Presence, formation, and position of reproductive organs
➡️ Uterine anomalies not visible on standard 2D scans
➡️ Follicle count to assess ovarian reserve

Some patients may also require additional procedures, such as HyCoSy, to check if Fallopian tubes are open — often done on the same day as your scan.

The results of your fertility assessment help your referring doctor determine the most appropriate treatment path.

To schedule a fertility assessment, call the Sydney clinic most convenient for you and speak with our friendly team.

In Australia, the average age for menopause is 51, though it can range from 40 to 60 years.

Premature menopause occurs before 40 — women experiencing this should speak with their doctor if concerned.

If periods continue after 56, it’s important to consult a doctor to rule out other causes.

Why Does Menopause Happen?
Menopause occurs as the number of ovarian follicles decreases with age, leading to lower production of oestrogen and progesterone. This hormonal change causes the lining of the womb (endometrium) to stop growing, and periods cease.

The Transition:
The climacteric, or menopausal transition, may last 5–6 years. During this time, decreasing hormone levels can influence the body in many ways — both physically and psychologically.

A New Phase of Life:
For most women, menopause marks the start of a new chapter. For some, symptoms can be challenging, and menopause hormone therapy (MHT) may be considered to manage symptoms, support bone health, and protect blood vessels.

All women are encouraged to seek advice from their doctor to explore options and maintain a fulfilling, healthy, and active life in the post-menopausal years.

To arrange a menopause screening ultrasound, ask your doctor for a referral and contact your nearest Ultrasound Care centre.

One of the most widely discussed theories behind the development of endometriosis is known as retrograde menstruation.

During a typical menstrual cycle, the lining of the uterus (endometrial cells) grows and is then shed with the menstrual blood. While most of this blood exits through the va**na, in some cases, a small amount flows backwards through the fallopian tubes into the abdomen — a process called retrograde menstruation.

When this happens, endometrial cells can be deposited onto areas such as the peritoneum, ovaries, or bowel. Influenced by the same hormones that affect the uterine lining, these cells continue their cycle of growth and shedding. Over time, this can lead to:
• Painful adhesions as tissues stick to surrounding organs
• Infertility due to organ involvement
• Ovarian cysts filled with old blood, sometimes called chocolate cysts

While retrograde menstruation is one possible explanation, the exact cause of endometriosis is still not fully understood — ongoing research continues to shed light on this complex condition.

If you have persistent pelvic pain, heavy periods, or difficulty conceiving, speak to your doctor. Early diagnosis and treatment can make a difference.

Carrying twins or more can come with additional demands on your body and your healthcare. You may experience increased nausea and have a higher likelihood of developing conditions such as anaemia, high blood pressure, or gestational diabetes. There’s also a greater chance of pre-term labour or growth and structural concerns, which is why close monitoring is so important.

Each scan in a multiple pregnancy takes longer, as we carefully assess every baby. Once a multiple pregnancy is identified, please let our admin team know each time you book a scan. This helps us ensure enough time is allocated to thoroughly check on you and each baby.

Your health—and your babies’ health—deserves the time and attention it needs. Please allow extra time for appointments and feel free to ask for a break if needed during your scan.

Ultrasound Care turns 21

Ultrasound Care began way back in 1996, in a single borrowed consulting room at the RPA Medical Centre in Newtown.

Dr Philippa Ramsay was an obstetrician/gynaecologist who sub-specialised in ultrasound. She had worked in other private ultrasound practices and as the first female O&G Ultrasound specialist in Sydney, she could see how it could be done better, with more understanding of the women's needs.

She was well supported by her colleagues who wanted their patients treated with sensitivity and care. She became busier and was soon joined by highly skilled sonographers and specialists who had a similar ethos.

The sonographers Mary McPhail and Rowena Gibson are still at Ultrasound Care 20 years later!!
