Each year in Australia, around 1,900 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer — and often it’s detected at an advanced stage, making treatment more difficult.

The symptoms can include:
➡️Bloating
➡️Difficulty eating and feeling full quickly
➡️Passing urine more frequently
➡️Increasing constipation
➡️Menstrual irregularities
➡️Feeling tired
➡️Indigestion
➡️Lower abdominal pain
➡️Pain during in*******se

Early detection can save lives. Know the symptoms, stay informed, and talk to your GP if you’re at risk.

Screening:
If your doctor believes you need testing, they can provide a referral. Once you have it, contact your nearest Ultrasound Care clinic to arrange your appointment.

Let’s shine a light on ovarian cancer and support progress for early detection.

In Australia, the average age of menopause is 51 years, but it can occur between 40–60.

Menopause happens as the ovaries produce less oestrogen and progesterone, causing periods to stop. This transition, called perimenopause, may take 5–6 years and affect women differently.

Common symptoms include:
• Hot flushes & night sweats
• Vaginal dryness & urinary changes
• Joint aches, dry skin, hair changes
• Weight changes & mood fluctuations

Some women experience few symptoms, others notice more — each journey is unique.

Menopause is a new phase of life, not the end of vitality.

Speak with your GP about screening, managing symptoms, and support.

A low-lying placenta means the placenta is sitting close to — or covering — the cervix early in pregnancy.

The important thing most people don’t realise?

In many cases, it moves up on its own as the uterus grows.

The management plan usually includes follow-up ultrasounds, monitoring for bleeding, and activity guidance depending on symptoms.

If it remains low later in pregnancy, birth planning changes — often meaning a planned caesarean for safety.

This isn’t about fear.

It’s about monitoring, timing, and making safe decisions for both mother and baby.

An IUD (or IUS) is a small device placed in the uterus. The device can either contain a small hormonal implant or it can be copper only.

The copper devices are used for contraception only, the hormonal devices for both contraception and for control of menstrual bleeding.

For many women, this is a convenient, long acting option.

But placement matters.

The device works well only when it is in the correct position. Having confirmation of position of your IUD by ultrasound provides a great deal of reassurance to you and your referrer; and this is especially the case when the strings can’t be felt or there are other concerns like fibroids where the placement can be challenging.

We also believe that using ultrasound guidance when inserting or removing an IUD helps make the procedure as comfortable as possible. It allows us to see exactly where the IUD needs to be placed and often means the speculum is needed for a shorter time.

Knowing is always better than guessing! We want to ensure that your experience is as comfortable and seamless as possible.

Nearly two decades ago, we recognised something that wasn’t widely addressed at the time —
pregnancy care shouldn’t come with financial uncertainty.

Long before capped costs became more common, we introduced the Ultrasound Care Promise, designed to give expecting parents clarity and reassurance throughout their pregnancy.

Because no two pregnancies are the same.
Some women need only a few scans.
Others require more frequent monitoring.

And decisions about care should never be influenced by concern about cost.

That’s why, once four full-priced obstetric scans have been completed, any additional scans required are bulk billed — helping provide consistency, clarity, and peace of mind when it matters most.

This approach has guided our care for many years, and it continues today — supporting women through both the expected and the unexpected.

Congratulations — you’re carrying two (or more!) little ones. 💜💜

Multiple pregnancies are exciting, but they also come with extra considerations. Carrying twins means there’s a higher chance of pre-term labour, growth differences, or structural concerns — which makes careful, detailed ultrasound monitoring essential.

Early scans help determine the type of twin pregnancy — whether each baby has their own placenta and sac, or if some layers are shared. This information guides the care and monitoring you’ll need throughout your pregnancy.

Because we’re caring for more than one little life at a time, scans take longer and require special attention. That’s why we ask you to let our team know if you’re expecting multiples when booking, so we can give you the time and care you and your babies deserve.

With Ultrasound Care, you can have peace of mind knowing both you and your babies are being carefully monitored every step of the way.

IUDs are tiny — but the decision isn’t.

They can prevent pregnancy for years, reduce heavy periods, and improve quality of life.

They can also cause side effects — and that matters.

Knowing the benefits and the risks is how you choose confidently.

Ovarian cancer is often called the “silent cancer” — not because it has no symptoms, but because the signs can be easy to miss.

Each year, around 1,400 women in Australia are diagnosed. It’s the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women, largely because many cases are found at a later stage.

Early detection can significantly improve outcomes.

Why is it hard to detect?

The symptoms are often vague, subtle, and easily mistaken for everyday health issues — and some women may have no symptoms at all.

Symptoms to be aware of:

• Persistent bloating
• Feeling full quickly or difficulty eating
• Urinating more often
• Increasing constipation
• Menstrual changes
• Fatigue
• Indigestion
• Lower abdominal or pelvic pain
• Pain during in*******se

Experiencing one symptom doesn’t mean cancer — but persistent or worsening symptoms should never be ignored.

Specialist ultrasound plays an important role in assessing gynaecological concerns and supporting earlier diagnosis when something isn’t quite right.

If any of these symptoms feel familiar, speak with your GP for a referral to get a scan.

Ultrasound Care turns 21

Ultrasound Care began way back in 1996, in a single borrowed consulting room at the RPA Medical Centre in Newtown.

Dr Philippa Ramsay was an obstetrician/gynaecologist who sub-specialised in ultrasound. She had worked in other private ultrasound practices and as the first female O&G Ultrasound specialist in Sydney, she could see how it could be done better, with more understanding of the women's needs.

She was well supported by her colleagues who wanted their patients treated with sensitivity and care. She became busier and was soon joined by highly skilled sonographers and specialists who had a similar ethos.

The sonographers Mary McPhail and Rowena Gibson are still at Ultrasound Care 20 years later!!
