What does it mean to chant from your heart?
If you have attended our kirtan or yoga asana sessions, you might have heard us say, “chant from your heart.” But have you ever stopped to think what that really means?
The first step is to listen to the mantra attentively. Listening is the active attempt to focus your attention. Instead of letting the mind wander, gently bring it to the sound of the mantra. You are hearing the melody, the tempo, and most importantly, the sacred sound. These transcendental mantras are endowed with unlimited spiritual potency, beyond the comprehension of our material mind.
So I welcome you to open your ears, take the mantras in through your ears and your mind, into your heart. The ear is like a funnel for sound vibration. Allow the mantras to pour through the funnel and enter your heart.
And when we chant, we are not singing because we have a good voice or to impress someone. We don’t want it to be mechanical. We want to try and chant these names of the Supreme Person—our eternal friend and well-wisher—in a mood of humility, surrender and love. We meditate on the sound as we sing, and let all our temporary worries and concerns float away, and rest in the reservoir of spiritual love and comfort.
Join us every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday for beautiful kirtan meditation.
