This is treatment is my signature ‘two-step’ lips.
Approaches to lip augmentation is very dependent on the nature of the imperfection and the patient’s aesthetic desires. All lips are different. In natural thin lips, I prefer to use a ‘two-step’ method, address the lip ratio by linear injecting into the thinner lip, the vermillion. At the 2-4 week follow up, I can review the shape by further injecting superficially when necessary.
Structural augmentation begins with a deeper-placed filler. This is followed by superficial filler either by serial puncture or linear threading. One of the biggest challenges is to understand which technique can ensure the patient’s aesthetic goals. Another challenge is to control exactly how much filler is placed in each area of the lip.
Lips have limited expansion properties. Migration can occur when parts of the lips are overfilled and there is leakage into other areas. Enhancing your upper or lower lip, I need to first examining your entire face. Balance with other facial structures, such as your nose, chin and eyes is an important consideration when I am injecting.
The first one step in my ‘two step’ method is a gradual injection of only 0.3ml to 0.8ml of hyaluronic acid. The next session is 2 to 4 weeks after, when I can review and further balance your lips. This allows the hyaluronic acid filler to adjust, the initial swelling to dissipate and the patient to realise that lip fillers are not all about sausages or ducks.
Asymmetries can be corrected at second ‘step two’ method. Lips need to be treated with respect. Overfilling in a single session should be avoided. Knowledge of anatomy and appropriate techniques decreases the risk of complications, avoids distortion and provides safe satisfactory results.
Natural thin lips are different from ageing thin lips. Techniques and product choice are different too. But that’s another story!
