⁣“When you’ve spent your life living a lie as the loud one, the crazy one, and the wild one - and finally the “gossiped about unfortunate one” - well, it can be a pretty strange thing when friends from the old days come across your path.⁣
⁣⁣
⁣Many are deeply uncomfortable with it.⁣
⁣They’re no longer able to slot you into the pigeonhole that had your name branded above it.⁣
⁣⁣
⁣The great thing about sobriety is that it has returned dignity, self respect, and a quiet and calm immovable strength to me that I never imagined I’d possess. It’s neither a boastful or arrogant thing (I happily set my ego aside with my drunk, loud, obnoxious persona.) - it’s a much quieter thing. Born from rock bottom and being humbled utterly by the deepest kind of shame.⁣
⁣⁣
⁣I never imagined liking myself, respecting myself, or feeling sure and steady. And yet, that’s the gift sobriety gave me. ⁣
⁣⁣
⁣And that’s one of a million reasons I no longer miss, want, or need alcohol. ⁣
⁣⁣
⁣It stole so much. ⁣
⁣⁣
⁣Sober life is richer, and more colourful, joyful, and wonderful in every way.⁣
⁣⁣
⁣The point is to change.⁣
⁣The point is to grow.⁣
⁣The point has always been to move on.⁣
⁣⁣
⁣I never want to look backwards. ⁣
⁣I’m not going that way.⁣
⁣⁣
⁣I am comfortable with who I am, and I am deeply thankful that labels given to me by others no longer hold claim or any kind of dominion over my life.⁣
⁣⁣
⁣That is absolute freedom.⁣
⁣And I will treasure it until the day I die.”⁣
