Magnesium- an essential mineral that we cannot live without!

Magnesium is stored in our bones, alongside sodium and calcium. We need it for:

-energy production (ATP)
-muscle and nerve function
-blood glucose control and insulin sensitivity
-blood pressure regulation
-bone health...and more!

The recommended dietary intake (RDI) for magnesium is 320mg for women and 420mg for men. However, in reality, most of us are probably not getting enough.

So how can we fix this? Well, truthfully it can be difficult to get enough magnesium through food alone, so supplementation may be required (especially during periods of high stress or illness and as we age).

To give your diet an extra boost of magnesium try including the following foods:
-cocoa powder, dark chocolate-(28g) - 64.6mg
-salmon - (85g) - 30mg
-avocado (whole)-60mg
-raspberries (1 cup)- 28mg
-blackberries (1 cup) - 29mg
-chia seeds (100g)-335 mg
-brazil nuts (100g) - 350mg
-San Pelligrino mineral water - 52.2mg/L

If you want to learn more about how to maximise the magnesium in your own diet, or to check if you may benefit from a magnesium supplement, our friendly and experienced team of dietitians are here to guide you👩‍💼👨🏼‍💼 👩‍🦰

With the cold weather well and truly set in, we often get home from work and want to grab something hot, quick and easy to eat. Chicken Soup is very popular and many people like to keep a few cans handy in the cupboard.

Even though homemade soup is always the best option for quality and taste, as we know exactly what goes in to it, we often don't have the time to make this, especially if soup is a last minute decision after work.

Therefore if opting for supermarket soup, you may like to consider the ingredients that go into the different brands and opt for one with less added numbers and more natural ingredients listed on the back.

As you can see the Dari's soup is by far one of the best choices when it comes to less preservatives, no added sugar, and using free range chicken.

Give it a try, we are sure you will enjoy it when you are next craving some tasty hot soup on these cold winter nights😋🍜

Margarine is often touted as a "healthy" alternative to butter. We've been led to believe that replacing butter with margarine will lower our cholesterol and improve our heart health...🤔

The truth is, there was never any rigorous evidence to show that the fats found in butter were even bad for our health in the first place.

On the contrary, margarine is made using ultra-processed vegetable oils which are high in omega-6 fats. There is evidence to show that excessive intake of omega-6 fats increases risk for developing inflammatory diseases such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease❌

Butter is made with just 2 ingredients via simple mechanical processing as well as being naturally rich in several fat-soluble vitamins such as A,E,D, and K2✅

So, not only is butter better for you, we think you would all agree that it also tastes better 😋

A question we hear all the time.......and the answer is...YES, they can!

Many people still look unsure when you say that there is such a thing as a healthy fat - and they are still more likely to shy away from all types of fat, rather than cut out the sugar, as they are convinced that fat is the reason for their weight gain, in the mistaken belief that all types of fat must be contributing to their unwanted body fat!

Healthy sources of fat are contained in whole foods that have been minimally processed and are rich in flavour and they should make up a generous portion of your dietary intake. They include:

-Fish and seafood (particularly wild caught)
-Eggs (free-range preferred)
-Red meat (preferably pasture-raised, free to roam)
-Coconut
-Full cream dairy products
-Avocado
-Olive Oil

They can help to protect us from chronic health conditions such as heart disease or asthma as well as autoimmune and degenerative conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and brain and mood issues.
This is because they are full of essential micronutrients for good health.

They also assist with weight loss by keeping us fuller for longer (and so resist the temptation to reach for those processed sugary snack foods).

Eating healthy fats will not make you fat, and it's time to switch gears and re-think your attitude towards these fats to make those changes necessary to fuel your body for weight loss and overall good health 💪

We often hear patients saying that they are too busy working or looking after their family to look after their own health goals properly!

So if this sounds like you, we suggest going on a monthly date with yourself to review your own health and evaluate the diet/lifestyle strategies you have in place.

Get a dietitian, exercise physiologist, or health coach to help you on your journey if necessary. Spend time on your mental health by taking time out to do something relaxing on your own.

Whether you are a busy Mum/Dad or a successful CEO, you are nothing without your health. You might think you have no choice but to put others first - you might even think you are being selfless. However, the most selfless thing you can do is improve your own health💥

Schedule out some time in your diary every single month so that you can progress towards being the best and healthiest version of yourself possible!

You cannot help others if you don't help yourself 😍

"Treating" yourself can mean many different things, yet we often think about treating ourselves with ultra processed foods filled with refined sugar and oils....

These foods give you short term satisfaction and only leave you wanting more (or feeling unwell).

These foods, when consumed in excess, can also lead to long-term health complications down the road.....

Is that really a treat?

More often than not, the desire for a treat brings more enjoyment than the actual treat itself, particularly when referring to some kind of food treat.

So, don't deny yourself of treats but consider redefining what a treat means to you.

You could treat yourself with:

🔸a bowl of granola and berries with full fat yoghurt
🔸a walk along the beach at sunset
🔸an expensive piece of steak (rather than the typical budget cut you may get more frequently) 🔸a platter with fresh fruit, nuts and cheese
🔸uninterrupted time with your family
🔸a picnic by the ocean or in a park
🔸a National Park hike
🔸a social evening with friends
and more.........

Go on - treat yourself😄

You CAN eat the same thing everyday and still meet your essential nutrient requirements.

The idea that we need to eat a variety of different foods or "eat the rainbow" is flawed by the unfortunate fact that most modern foods are ultra-processed, contain harmful chemicals (eg. Glyphosate), or are imported (with travel time and methods of storage affecting nutrient value).

Simplifying your diet can have vast benefits.

When you prioritise nutrient-dense animal foods at each meal (red meat, chicken, eggs, salmon) you will end up eating a similar thing on most days.

Simplifying your diet can be liberating, minimising the decision fatigue that so many of us face when it comes to eating and meal planning.

Simplifying your diet can also be more affordable, reducing money spent on ultra-processed and imported foods.

Simplifying your diet is, by far, one of the most effective srategies for implementing and sustaining longterm behaviour change in order to reach your goal to better health✅

There is absolutely no doubt that diet and lifestyle change is hard!

It takes a considerable amount of time, effort and sometimes money to improve your health with positive diet and lifestyle adjustments.

It feels easiser to stay where we are, than to change.

But think of the long term consequences of NOT changing your diet - NOT improving your health.

Is it worth it ❌

Often times we hear patients say:

"Intermittent fasting works so well for me because as soon as I start to eat, I can't stop and I end up eating all the wrong things....It's much easier to just not eat!"

Although we acknowledge that intermittent fasting can be a useful strategy, it does not teach us HOW to eat. It just delays the inevitable.

We, as humans, have a fundamental requirement for energy and nutrients. More often than not, individuals are under chronic stress which means their energy and nutrient requirements are higher!

The most important thing you can do for your health is to learn HOW to construct a dietary approach that provides you with the energy and nutrients that YOUR body needs.

Once you have mastered this, then you may consider layering on additional strategies infrequently, sush as fasting.

Build the foundations first✅
