"Treating" yourself can mean many different things, yet we often think about treating ourselves with ultra processed foods filled with refined sugar and oils....

These foods give you short term satisfaction and only leave you wanting more (or feeling unwell).

These foods, when consumed in excess, can also lead to long-term health complications down the road.....

Is that really a treat?

More often than not, the desire for a treat brings more enjoyment than the actual treat itself, particularly when referring to some kind of food treat.

So, don't deny yourself of treats but consider redefining what a treat means to you.

You could treat yourself with:

🔸a bowl of granola and berries with full fat yoghurt
🔸a walk along the beach at sunset
🔸an expensive piece of steak (rather than the typical budget cut you may get more frequently) 🔸a platter with fresh fruit, nuts and cheese
🔸uninterrupted time with your family
🔸a picnic by the ocean or in a park
🔸a National Park hike
🔸a social evening with friends
and more.........

Go on - treat yourself😄

You CAN eat the same thing everyday and still meet your essential nutrient requirements.

The idea that we need to eat a variety of different foods or "eat the rainbow" is flawed by the unfortunate fact that most modern foods are ultra-processed, contain harmful chemicals (eg. Glyphosate), or are imported (with travel time and methods of storage affecting nutrient value).

Simplifying your diet can have vast benefits.

When you prioritise nutrient-dense animal foods at each meal (red meat, chicken, eggs, salmon) you will end up eating a similar thing on most days.

Simplifying your diet can be liberating, minimising the decision fatigue that so many of us face when it comes to eating and meal planning.

Simplifying your diet can also be more affordable, reducing money spent on ultra-processed and imported foods.

Simplifying your diet is, by far, one of the most effective srategies for implementing and sustaining longterm behaviour change in order to reach your goal to better health✅

There is absolutely no doubt that diet and lifestyle change is hard!

It takes a considerable amount of time, effort and sometimes money to improve your health with positive diet and lifestyle adjustments.

It feels easiser to stay where we are, than to change.

But think of the long term consequences of NOT changing your diet - NOT improving your health.

Is it worth it ❌

Often times we hear patients say:

"Intermittent fasting works so well for me because as soon as I start to eat, I can't stop and I end up eating all the wrong things....It's much easier to just not eat!"

Although we acknowledge that intermittent fasting can be a useful strategy, it does not teach us HOW to eat. It just delays the inevitable.

We, as humans, have a fundamental requirement for energy and nutrients. More often than not, individuals are under chronic stress which means their energy and nutrient requirements are higher!

The most important thing you can do for your health is to learn HOW to construct a dietary approach that provides you with the energy and nutrients that YOUR body needs.

Once you have mastered this, then you may consider layering on additional strategies infrequently, sush as fasting.

Build the foundations first✅

Many patients who desire weight loss are uncomfortable with the idea of "eating more".

They have been told that "fat makes you fat" and "Calories are bad"!

When you learn that fat and Calories are not the evil they have been made out to be, but they are essential to physical and mental function, longevity, and weight management, you become more comfortable with the idea of "eating more".

Eating more to recover your metabolic rate and support long-term weight management is a process:

It takes time.

It requires commitment and patience.

It requires letting go of outdated weight loss advice and diet misinformation.

You can continue to eat less to lose weight, or you can eat more!

The choice is yours💥

Do not apply population-level dietary advice to yourself!

Did the TV news assess your symptoms of dehydration when it told you to cut out salt?

Did the newspaper check your vitamin B12 levels when it told you to stop eating eggs?

Did the radio assess your lean tissue mass when it told you to fear red meat?

Did the magazine ask about your disordered eating history when it told you to restrict Calories?

Population-level nutrition advice is not the same as a personalised dietary intervention.

Learn to acknowledge that population-level nutrition advice may be appropriate for some people, but definitely not everyone!

Always speak to a trusted healthcare practitioner for personalised health and nutrition recommendations✅

Extreme Calorie restriction is a significant source of stress on the body and increases risk for nutritional deficiencies, anxiety, depression and disordered eating, and yet diet culture still tells us to restrict our calories to levels much lower than that required of a child!

While children do need more calories per kilo of body weight (due to their growth and development) most adults still require a minimum of 1700 Calories to meet their basal metabolic rate (energy requirements to stay alive/maintain lean tissue) and that is without activity or other stress factors applied!

One of our our main goals at Ellipse Health is to calculate the patient's individual energy requirements and help them develop a nutrient dense dietary plan to meet these, whilst also ensuring progress towards both their health and weight goals.

All without extreme calorie restriction💥

Increasing your intake of protein is an effective strategy for improving metabolic rate, addressing nutritional deficiencies, supporting hormone balance, and building muscle mass💪

Animal-based protein foods are excellent sources of key nutrients including choline, vitamin B12, iron, zinc, omega-3 fats and calcium.

Prioritising protein at every meal is one of the top strategies we discuss with our patients - no matter what "diet" they are following✅

With Summer holidays and Christmas just around the corner it's that time of year when people start entertaining family and friends at weekends or attend office parties in the lead up to the biggest get together on Christmas Day 🎄

Whilst Cheese platters are one of the most popular items on the table, it is still seen as a "naughty food" so people hold back on the cheese but will reach for the overly processed and sugary snacks without too much hesitation 🥨🍩🍰

However, far from being a "naughty food" Cheese is not only a good source of healthy fats and protein, it is full of vitamins and minerals which are essential to good health💥

The protein hit will also leave you filling fuller for longer, and less likely to overload on those actual "naughty foods"💪

So..... enjoy and don't pass on the cheese😋
