We just finished our walk — and we’re feeling pretty OK! 🌳✨

Today is a reminder to check in with the people around us, young and old. 💛 Sometimes a simple “R U OK?” can open the door to meaningful conversations and stronger connections. Together, let’s keep nurturing a kinder, more caring community 🫶

Community Tech @ East Reservoir Senior Citizens Centre 📱🏘️🌳

We recently ran our first Community Tech sessions in Mandarin in the Darebin area! Our wonderful Helpers – Xinnie, Jasper and Milly – guided participants through WeChat, helping them explore its many features and build confidence in searching the internet.

Afterwards, everyone came together to make and share traditional Chinese food—a perfect way to end the session with warmth and connection.🍜🍡

Participants left feeling inspired and empowered, saying they can now “bring more fun and connection into their golden years!” ✨

West Helper Group (Golden-Rayed Blue Butterflies) Meet-up 🦋༘

At our recent bimonthly meet-up, Helpers from the Western suburbs came together to connect, share stories from their sessions, and build new skills!

Facilitated by Hannah and Cherry, the group reflected on recent successes, brainstormed solutions to challenging situations, and shared strategies for having successful interactions when members and Helpers share differing opinions.

So many insights, so much wisdom — everyone left with something new to bring into their sessions. ✨

Old friends reunited after 10 years 👭

With Cherry’s support, Danute set out on a special mission to visit her old friend Phil, who she had spent many happy years playing tennis with in Richmond.

The reunion was filled with joy—over tea and cake, they swapped stories, shared life updates, and reminisced about the past. Danute was truly grateful for the chance to reconnect and relive those cherished memories. 💛

Joe and Nicholas go shoe shopping at Barkley Square 👞✨

After enjoying a tasty lamb kebab on Hope St, the two wandered over to the shops in search of the perfect fit for Joe. It turned out that size 10 was just right. Joe left happily with a stylish new pair of brown slip-on shoes!

Run a free tech help program for seniors at your library or community venue! 💻 🏛️

Lively’s friendly team can run a Tech Help program to help over-50s navigate the digital world with confidence. We know library, residential care, and community centre staff are often stretched to meet the demand for tech support for older residents.

We’ve been doing this since 2018, and we’ll even help you apply for funding!

Meet Robin – our CEO at Lively! 👋

Here’s what he’s all about, and what’s on his mind right now.

What is at the heart of your work at Lively?
Relationships, relationships, relationships. I feel like my role is about making sure that every team member, from our board to our newest Helper, feels valued and cared for, and is able to exercise their own creativity in their work. And that we're all pointing in roughly the same direction!

What are you excited about for the coming year?
I'm super excited about our new digital literacy programs catering just to Mandarin and Vietnamese speakers; it's a big expansion of our programs for these communities and I'm stoked that we've made such a firm commitment to making our work accessible to folks who really need it.

What keeps you at Lively?
It's probably not a creative answer, but our purpose and our people. Purpose, because I believe rekindling intergenerational relationships is so important for our individual and collective resilience. People, because I've been working with some of our team members for almost seven years now, and we know each other's rhythms so well; working together feels like a dance.

Understanding loneliness in youth is far less investigated than in older people, and at Lively we take supporting the wellness of young people, equally as important as the wellness of older people. There are so many ways organisations can help create genuine moments of connection, where young people can feel more valued and less alone. 🫂✨

Our young Helpers share their personal stories about loneliness—and the power of meaningful connection 💭

Health challenges, moving to a new city, or simply feeling different can make it hard to form real connections. At Lively, we're committed to creating spaces where young people feel safe, seen, and empowered.

Most of us have experienced some sort of loneliness at some point. By opening up the conversation, we hope to normalise these experiences—and encourage people to reach out, so no one has to face tough times alone.

It’s Loneliness Awareness Week (4–8 August)—a time to pause, reflect, and better understand who’s experiencing loneliness, and how we can offer support.🫶✨

This year’s theme, Moments Matter, puts the spotlight on young people aged 16–25. Despite being the most digitally connected generation, they’re reporting the highest levels of social disconnection. Loneliness is often associated with older age, but today it’s young Australians who are feeling it most. This stage of life is critical for developing peer relationships, forming social identity, and gaining independence—yet many are struggling to feel truly connected. We want to take this time to acknowledge the unique challenges our Helpers may be facing too.

Swipe through to explore the reality of youth loneliness in Australia.

Meet our newest Helpers! ⭐

We were blown away by the number of applications for this latest intake—it was incredibly competitive round, with over 100 applications, and so many unique and inspiring individuals putting their hands up.

In the end, we landed on this amazing group—many of whom bring the gift of a second native language to share with the community as we expand our Vietnamese and Mandarin-language tech help programs.

They've just completed their training with Cherry, and we can’t wait to see these wonderful humans head out and start making a difference in the lives of our Members!

A sunny winter’s day stroll along the creek 🚶🚶🍃

Margaret and Cherry set off on an adventure to Darebin Creek, just near Margaret’s house. At first, Margaret was a little worried about snakes, but Cherry—and some friendly passersby—reassured her that snakes hibernate in winter and were unlikely to make an appearance. They met some lovely dogs along the way and soaked up the beauty of nature. Margaret was so glad she faced her fears and got out for the walk—she left feeling grateful for the day and excited for many more walks to come!

About Lively

Lively is a not-for-profit home care provider like no other; a community that offers support for older people and employment for the young.

Our vision is a world where both younger and older people feel valued, connected and supported. To do this, we train and employ young jobseekers (aged 18–25) to provide support and services that help older folks remain independent at home and continue to live rich, meaningful lives.

With Australia’s population ageing, and the future of work for our young people changing, we believe that the time is now to change how young and older people are valued and supported in our community.

We exist to spark the connection.
