Book of the Week
Story time went big this week 🌟📚🦘

For National Simultaneous Storytime 2026, millions of kids across Australia all read Luna Roo together at the same time!

This year’s book, Luna Roo, is a fun and energetic underdog story that brought heaps of movement, laughs and excitement into our sessions this week.

We loved using this book to support speech, language and early literacy skills in a way that felt playful, engaging and connected ❤️

Here are a few ways we’d use Luna Roo in speech pathology sessions:

Speech sounds: Practising ‘l’ and ‘r’ words (Luna, roo, run, roar, really, roll etc.) through repetition and play.

Language: Retelling the story, putting events in order, making predictions and talking about the characters and actions.

Early literacy: Rhyming, beginning sounds, syllables and listening out for repeated words or phrases.

A small update from me 🤍

As some of you know, I’ve been a paediatric speech pathologist for over 10 years, with a big part of my work sitting in infant and child feeding.

I’ve also been doing further training in breastfeeding, lactation and infant feeding support as I work towards becoming an IBCLC. I’ve completed training including Possums NDC, infant feeding education and lactation-specific study, and I’m currently working toward my clinical hours supporting breastfeeding families.

One thing I keep coming back to is how hard it can be to find breastfeeding support in the Shoalhaven once you’re home from hospital.

We do have some incredible IBCLCs locally and further north, but access can be tricky. Waitlists can be long, and travelling with a newborn isn’t always realistic.

So while I’m completing this part of my training, I’m offering free DM chats for mums with breastfeeding, pumping, mixed feeding, bottle refusal, pain, supply worries, tube feeding, or just general “is this normal?” questions.

It’s not meant to replace medical care or a full lactation consult where that’s needed, but sometimes it helps to have someone kind to ask before things feel bigger than they need to.

Feel free to message me, or share this with someone who might need a bit of support right now 🤍

Starting solids has somehow become one of those parenting milestones where everyone has an opinion, someone on Facebook says banana is “too slippery”, and you suddenly find yourself googling “can babies choke on avocado?” at 11:42pm.

The truth? There’s no gold-star method.
No secret puree timeline.
No baby-led weaning police hiding in your pantry.

Different babies. Different families. Different nervous systems. Different capacities.

What matters most is:
• responsive feeding
• safe textures
• opportunities to explore
• and a calm, supported mealtime environment (as much as humanly possible with a tiny person launching toast onto the floor).

You do not need to do solids perfectly to raise a child who eats. 🤍

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve shared a Book of the Week — I’ve missed these little moments of fun (and all of you!). So, I’m pressing pause on being MIA on socials and jump right back in with a story that’s equal parts hilarious and heartwarming: “Pig the Blob” 🐷💦

This cheeky tale follows Pig, our favourite greedy pug, who’s taken his lounging lifestyle to next level blob status. Here are some ways you can use Pig the Blob to build communication and social-emotional skills with your little one:

🟢 Predicting What Happens Next: What do you think Pig will do when he realises he’s too blobby to move? Encourage your child to guess, giggle, and imagine how Pig might try to fix his sticky situation.

🟢 Character Feelings and Empathy: Discuss how Pig feels at different points in the story — when he’s happy, frustrated, or embarrassed. Ask, “How do you think Trevor feels when Pig won’t play?” to build emotional understanding.

🟢 Balanced Habits Vocabulary: Introduce words like exercise, balance, and energy. Talk about why moving our bodies (and taking breaks from screens!) is important — even for little Pigs.

🟢 Rhyming and Rhythm Fun: Aaron Blabey’s trademark rhymes make this book perfect for practising speech sounds and rhythm. Have fun exaggerating the rhymes together — “Pig the blob was a SLUGGISH SLOB!”

🟢 Cause and Effect: Explore how Pig’s choices lead to certain outcomes. “What happened because Pig wouldn’t get off the couch?” This helps your child connect actions and consequences in a lighthearted way.

🟢 Sequencing Practice: Retell the story in order — what happened first, next, and last? This builds narrative skills and memory recall.
