Itโ€™s been a hot minute since Iโ€™ve shared a Book of the Week โ€” Iโ€™ve missed these little moments of fun (and all of you!). So, Iโ€™m pressing pause on being MIA on socials and jump right back in with a story thatโ€™s equal parts hilarious and heartwarming: โ€œPig the Blobโ€ ๐Ÿท๐Ÿ’ฆ

This cheeky tale follows Pig, our favourite greedy pug, whoโ€™s taken his lounging lifestyle to next level blob status. Here are some ways you can use Pig the Blob to build communication and social-emotional skills with your little one:

๐ŸŸข Predicting What Happens Next: What do you think Pig will do when he realises heโ€™s too blobby to move? Encourage your child to guess, giggle, and imagine how Pig might try to fix his sticky situation.

๐ŸŸข Character Feelings and Empathy: Discuss how Pig feels at different points in the story โ€” when heโ€™s happy, frustrated, or embarrassed. Ask, โ€œHow do you think Trevor feels when Pig wonโ€™t play?โ€ to build emotional understanding.

๐ŸŸข Balanced Habits Vocabulary: Introduce words like exercise, balance, and energy. Talk about why moving our bodies (and taking breaks from screens!) is important โ€” even for little Pigs.

๐ŸŸข Rhyming and Rhythm Fun: Aaron Blabeyโ€™s trademark rhymes make this book perfect for practising speech sounds and rhythm. Have fun exaggerating the rhymes together โ€” โ€œPig the blob was a SLUGGISH SLOB!โ€

๐ŸŸข Cause and Effect: Explore how Pigโ€™s choices lead to certain outcomes. โ€œWhat happened because Pig wouldnโ€™t get off the couch?โ€ This helps your child connect actions and consequences in a lighthearted way.

๐ŸŸข Sequencing Practice: Retell the story in order โ€” what happened first, next, and last? This builds narrative skills and memory recall.

Did you know some children learn language in chunks instead of single words? This is called ๐™‚๐™š๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™–๐™ก๐™ฉ ๐™‡๐™–๐™ฃ๐™œ๐™ช๐™–๐™œ๐™š ๐™‹๐™ง๐™ค๐™˜๐™š๐™จ๐™จ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ, and itโ€™s a truly meaningful and valid way to communicate!

A favourite story of mine is about a client of mine who amazed everyone at preschool one day. One day at preschool, a little guy I work with was saying, โ€œScooby Doo, Scooby Doo!โ€ At first, it seemed like playful repetition.
But then, ๐—ฟ๐˜‚๐—ต-๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ต!โ€”we cracked the code. Turns out, โ€œScooby Dooโ€ wasnโ€™t about pretending to make-believe playing the fun loving, crime solving doggyโ€”it was his way of saying, โ€œ๐™„โ€™๐™ข ๐™๐™ช๐™ฃ๐™œ๐™ง๐™ฎ!โ€

Why? His lunchbox had a big picture of Scooby on it. By saying โ€œScooby Doo,โ€ he was connecting the lunchbox with his request to have something to eat. He wasnโ€™t just repeating; he was communicating in the most genius way.

This is Gestalt Language Processing in action. These kids donโ€™t learn language word by wordโ€”they learn it in chunks, or โ€œscripts,โ€ tied to moments, feelings, or experiences. And when we slow down and listen, the meaning behind those scripts becomes crystal clear.

๐Ÿ” Play Language Detective: Their scripts hold meaning. Listen. Observe. Decode. โ€œScooby Dooโ€ might mean hunger today, excitement tomorrowโ€”itโ€™s all about connection.

๐Ÿ” Honour their Words: Once we understood what โ€œScooby Dooโ€ meant, we could help by modeling: โ€œOh, youโ€™re hungry! Lunchy Doo!โ€โ€”giving him the next step in language building.

๐Ÿ” Model and Expand: By weaving in new phrases tied to their scripts, we help them build bridges to the next stage of communication.

๐Ÿ” Respect the Process: Language grows in stages. From phrases to breaking them down into individual words, itโ€™s all part of their unique journey.

Gestalt Language Processing isnโ€™t just fascinatingโ€”itโ€™s a reminder that communication can be as meaningful, intentional and unique as the kids themselves. Do you have any Scooby Doo moments to celebrate?! Tell me below! ๐Ÿฅช๐Ÿ’ซ

Developmental Language Disorder is a hidden but common lifelong disability that affects 1 in 14 people causing difficulties understanding and using language for no known reason.

The 2024 DLDDAY theme is Speak Up for DLD, calling on the community to speak up for the needs of people with DLD at school and in the workplace. Daily life at school and work often involves talk, lots of talk. And spoken language is a barrier to learning and working for people with DLD.

This is where teachers and employers can have a HUGE impact. By creating a supportive and safe environment, anxiety can be reduced and students and employees with DLD then have the space to grow and thrive. Educators and employers are encouraged to head to RADLD.org for resources on how to support people with DLD at school and work.

Raising Awareness of Developmental Language Disorder (RADLD), the peak body that coordinates international are advocating for increased recognition and support for people with DLD around the world.

โ€œPeople with DLD are 6 times more likely to suffer from anxiety and 3 times more likely to have clinical depression. They are also at significant risk of struggling with reading, spelling and mathematics. Although DLD is a common condition affecting many areas of life, people with DLD are unlikely to receive access to services,โ€ said Stephen Parsons, Chairperson of RADLD.

This year, the world is lighting up purple and yellow to boost awareness of DLD globally. RADLD can confirm that more than 100 landmarks are scheduled to shine bright on or around Friday 18 October 2024.

Everyone has their own unique way of communicating. Whether itโ€™s through words, signs, digital messages, or writing, communication builds bridges, creates understanding, and strengthens relationships. Itโ€™s all about making connections and expressing ourselves in ways that are truly our own.

โœจMaking Connections
During Speech Pathology Australia Week, it is important to recognise the critical role communication plays in daily life. Effective communication is essential for sharing information, building relationships, and participating fully in society. For individuals with communication difficulties, these activities can be challenging, often leading to social and emotional barriers. Speech pathologists play a key role in addressing these challenges by providing targeted interventions that improve communication abilities and enhance social inclusion. By raising awareness this week, we underscore the essential work of speech pathologists in supporting individuals to communicate more effectively, fostering greater connection and participation in the community.

Speech pathologists work with people of all ages. They assist those who have trouble understanding and communicating with others, and they help with reading, spelling, and using technology or alternative communication methods.
Speech pathologists also support individuals who have difficulty swallowing, which can make eating and drinking challenging.

You can make SO many fun art pieces using vegetable stamps. You could use potato, beetroot, broccoli or celery to make your stamps. You could use the beetroot juice as 'vegetable paint' or you could stamp vegetables into paints to make your art!
As you are making your artwork, talk about the properties of your 'paintbrush' in terms of colours, shape, feel and temperature. "I am using my green broccoli heads to paint the leaves of the tree!"

Have fun with this one! Screenshot it for later!
