Supporting Families for a Positive Breastfeeding Journey

As health professionals, we play a pivotal role in shaping a family’s experience with breastfeeding. Simple, proactive guidance can make the difference between stress and confidence. Encourage parents to:
✨ Connect with a lactation consultant early to prevent small issues from becoming big challenges.
✨ Create a calm and supportive feeding environment.
✨ Stay mindful of hydration and nutrition to sustain energy and milk supply.
✨ Recognise and respond to feeding cues promptly for smoother sessions.
✨ Seek connection in peer support groups to normalise the journey and provide community.

When we empower families with these strategies, we set the stage for a more positive and sustainable breastfeeding experience. 🌿

📣 Call for Reviewers – Preparing for Birth: Partners 📖

I'm seeking a diverse group of reviewers to read and provide feedback on my upcoming book, Preparing for Birth: Partners — a practical, supportive guide for anyone walking alongside a birthing woman.

This book is for all kinds of birth partners — not just dads. Whether you're a dad, same-sex partner, friend, sister, or chosen support person, your insights matter. I want this resource to reflect the many ways people show up to support someone through birth.

I’m especially keen to hear from:
👨‍🍼 Expectant and new fathers
👩‍👧 Expectant and new mothers
🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Same-sex partners and chosen support people
🌿 Acupuncturists, Massage Therapists, Aromatherapists
🧑‍⚕️ Midwives, Doulas, Obstetricians, GPs, Early Childhood Nurses
👩‍🏫 Childbirth Educators
🗣️ Representatives from consumer advocacy groups

🗓️ I hope to have the completed draft ready by 20 June and I’ll need final feedback by 7 July. If you are available, I can send through sections of the book before this date.

You’ll receive a digital copy of the manuscript and a short confidentiality agreement to sign.

If you’re interested, please comment below or send me a message.

Thank you for helping shape a resource that supports every kind of partner on the journey to parenthood. 💛

Jane xx

Throwback to the 2008 Homebirth Australia conference dinner — all dressed up and ready to celebrate midwifery, community, and lifelong friendships 💃✨

With my long-time midwifery partner Robyn Dempsey and two colleagues by my side, so many memories, so many births, and so much laughter over the years.

Here’s to the power of women supporting women, in birth and in life. 💛

“It’s often said I am made for this,
Though sometimes I’m unsure
Because a mother wasn’t waiting in
The girl I was before.

She didn’t lie in restless slumbers
Memories made of night
And when the sky’s outfit would change
She’d struggle to see the light.

She’d never been so still before
While her heart continued to travel
She’d never felt so put together
While the stitching of her unravelled.

She’d never known the waves of pain
That were woven into her bones
How to move without their weight
Or how to dance alone.

She’d never been this shape before
Her body sore and broken
Where life did grow, her heart a home
It’s door forever open.

She’d never known a relationship
Could balance on mountain ridges
An ocean in between them
As they built their tiny bridges.

She’d never known how love could change
A person to a place
How home is found in the way we’re held
In their smell, or in their face.

She’d never felt this kind of weight
Or how time could hold it’s breath
How silence could be deafening
How to give when there’s nothing left.

She’d never had to pretend to know
Question countlessly if she was wrong
And learn one day she wasn’t pretending
And she’d known all along.

Her feelings never leaked like rivers
Her time never so poor
Yet richer in the ways
That didn’t matter as much before.

She didn’t know that nature could
Be placed upon her chest
How watching them grow was a type of calm
That meant she would never rest.

So though they say I was made for this
I’m not sure I agree.
It wasn’t I that made the mother
But motherhood, that made me.

My body holds the wisdom of generations. I trust its every signal, its every movement, as it guides me through this sacred journey. There’s a power within me that knows exactly what to do, instinctively, beautifully, and with purpose. In surrendering to the process, I find strength I never knew I had. This is the miracle of life unfolding, and I am in awe of what my body can do. 🌿✨

It’s both a sad and happy last day for Hayley and Elle. Sad as their six months placement is over and I’ll miss them. Happy because they’ve done amazingly well and will make wonderful midwives.

Thank you for my fantastic gift 🎁 that will take pride of place on my desk.

I am modelling the midwifery apron. The apron features an inspiring message from the Chinese philosopher, Lao Tzu, that reads:

💜“Imagine that you are a midwife: You are assisting at someone else’s birth. Do good without show or fuss. Facilitate what is happening rather than what you think ought to be happening. When the baby is born, the mother will rightly say, ‘We did it ourselves.’” — Lao Tzu, 5th century B.C.💜

I've been planning the next Your Private Practice Workshop I am running in Sydney for - I've been running these workshops for thirteen years. Private Midwifery has evolved so much in that time. If you'd like an action-packed day covering all sorts of issues regarding setting up and running a private practice, I'd love to see you on the 15th of November.

This week, I am researching marketing - specifically, what is recommended regarding social media and midwifery practice.

APHRA states that social media includes:
☑️social networking (Facebook, Twitter, WEChat, Weibo, WhatsApp)
☑️professional networking (LinkedIn)
☑️discussion forums (Reddit, Whirlpool)
☑️media sharing (YouTube, Flickr, Instagram)
☑️content production (blogs [Tumblr, Blogger] and microblogs [Twitter])
☑️knowledge/information aggregation (Wikipedia)
☑️virtual reality and gaming environments (Second Life), and
☑️booking sites and apps (HealthEngine, Whitecoat, Podium).

The definition of social media is so broad and continues to expland. One of the questions I am exploring for the workshop is how to avoid the dangers of social media and how to met AHPRA's regulatory requirements.

If you'd like to learn more, join me at the workshop.
