Restaurant Highchairs dirtier than toilet seats?
Researchers found that the average number of bacteria in baby high chairs in restaurants was 147 per square centimetre, compared to only 8 for a toilet seat.
The bacteria found included E-coli. Staph aureus and enterococcus faecalis which can cause upset stomachs - a serious illness for young children.
Dr. Nicholas Moon director of technical affairs at Microban, makers of antibacterial products, which conducted the research across a variety of restaurants, said: 'The test results varied considerably and while some of the high chairs were relatively clean, others had concentrations of bacteria as high as 1,200 bacteria per square centimetre.
In 2007 a study by the Hygiene Council found that 60 per cent of food trays on baby high chairs in the home were found to hold Coliforms - bacteria that indicate a surface has been contaminated by faecal matter, raw meat, soil or unwashed vegetables.
