Cognitive inflexibility is a key feature of various mental disorders, reflecting an individual’s difficulty in adapting their thinking or behaviour in response to changing circumstances. This rigidity can show up as an inability to shift attention or change strategies, often leading to unhelpful behaviours. In mental health, cognitive inflexibility is linked to compulsivity, where individuals struggle to move away from repetitive thoughts or actions despite negative outcomes. This can worsen symptoms and make coping harder, making it an important focus in understanding and treating mental health conditions.

Cognitive flexibility is linked to mental wellness. Inflexibility to compulsivity and mental health problems. Learn how to increase your cognitive flexibility.

Breakups are never easy, and our online presence can make them even harder to navigate. Imagine scrolling through your social media feed, only to be hit with a post from your ex that makes your heart sink. Maybe it’s a photo of them smiling, a status update about how “great” life is, or, the worst of all, a glimpse into their new relationship. It’s a gut punch, an emotional setback just when you thought you were starting to heal. Sound familiar?

“The ick” is a sudden and intense feeling of disgust or repulsion towards someone, especially during the early stages of dating. This feeling can come unexpectedly, or from an awareness of certain unpleasant traits or behaviours in another person. The ick can be a powerful force that leads to immediate distancing from the partner, often resulting in the termination of a relationship – or even avoiding further communication.

There are great campaigns to raise awareness about men’s biological health, but less focus on their mental health. This is unfortunate, as, due to societal pressure and norms, men often struggle with their mental health alone, and find it difficult to reach out for help. Let’s talk about men’s mental health!

Men often struggle with mental health problems but the symptoms are different: they act out and often don't reach out for help. Therapy works for men too.

Attachment styles are patterns of connection that shape our relationships and emotional bonds. There are four main styles of attachment, namely secure, which comes with confidence, open communication, and trust; insecure-anxious, riddled with worries that can cloud our interactions; and insecure-avoidant, which may lead us to retreat from closeness; lastly, disorganised attachment, which is a conflict between the need for closeness and the fear or mistrust.

Attachment styles are patterns of relationships. Secure is confidence. Insecure-anxious is worried. Insecure-avoidant is distant. Disorganised is push-pull.

Emotion dysregulation, while commonly linked to experiencing intense emotions, goes beyond the mere intensity of feelings. It involves the skill of selecting the most suitable emotional response for a particular context, understanding these emotions, and having the capacity to reflect on and modulate them.

Emotion dysregulation is not just having "big emotions" but a dynamic between being able to feel, express, and think about our emotions in healthy ways.
