The Australian Society of Anaesthetists Supporting, representing and educating Australia’s anaesthetists since 1934.

The Australian Society of Anaesthetists (ASA) was founded in 1934 as a voluntary association of members practicing anaesthesia throughout Australia. The ASA effectively promotes and protects the status, independence and best interests of Australian anaesthetists with its principal foci being the economic, workforce and professional interests of anaesthetists. This is achieved through negotiations

with state and federal health departments and associated medical bodies, the development of policy and the publication of guidelines. The Society, jointly with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA), provides representatives to Standards Australia, Medical Services Advisory Committee and the Professional Services Review Committee. The ASA's publications include the international peer review scientific journal, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, the ASA news and the Relative Value Guide. It conducts an annual National Scientific Congress, and in conjunction with ANZCA provides Continuing Medical Education events at individual state and territory levels. https://iamonline.org.au/

📢Speaker Announcement

We are thrilled to announce Professor Alicia Dennis as a keynote speaker at ASA's National Scientific Congress 2025!

Prof Dennis is an academic clinician researcher and obstetric anaesthesiologist, based​ in the Department of Critical Care at University of Melbourne, Deakin University and Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Sunshine Hospital. The key focus of her research program is hemodynamic using echocardiography, cardiac magnetic resonance and cardiopulmonary exercise testing to determine the physiology of preeclampsia.

Prof Dennis has over 100 publications and mentored and supervised over 80 medical students, anaesthesia and obstetric registrars and fellows, and early career consultants. Prof Dennis has received numerous national and international medals and prizes for her preeclampsia work including the Gilbert Troup Medal on two occasions, the Obstetric Anaesthetists’ Association of the UK Best Science Award, and the Zuspan Award for “the most outstanding clinical work” from The International Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy.

We're excited to share our new theatre cap during NAIDOC Week (6-13 July). This design is available for members to purchase but for a limited time only - while stocks last!

Our new branded theatre cap features artwork “Generations” by proud Dharug artist Hayley Cruickshanks. The artwork depicts interconnected lines leading to a central meeting place, symbolising the sharing of culture and stories across generations. These lines also represent the individual journeys we each take through life. Circular patterns signify community, the gathering of younger generations, and the emergence of future leaders.
