Most people are surprised to learn that the discs between your vertebrae have no direct blood supply. They get their nutrients almost entirely through movement, a process called imbibition, where compression and decompression during activity essentially pumps fluid in and out of the disc (like putting a dry kitchen sponge into water squeezing it, letting go and it sucks the water in).
