MacKillop Seasons

MacKillop Seasons MacKillop Seasons help build the wellbeing and resilience of communities following adversity.

MacKillop Seasons' programs aim to strengthen the social and emotional well being of people who are experiencing major life changes and losses such as death, separation and divorce by supporting them to explore the impact of change and loss on everyday life and to learn new ways to respond. Written by Professor Anne Graham and built upon J William Worden’s theory of grief, our flagship program Seasons for Growth is an innovative grief and loss education program that uses the imagery of the seasons to illustrate the experience of grief. Our education programs are evidence based, and many external evaluations over the years have continued to affirm Seasons for Growth and its contribution to the lives of people touched by loss and grief. Throughout its 20 year lifespan the Seasons for Growth Children and Young People’s Program has gone through three iterations to incorporate new evidence and ensure that it continues to provide a relevant and highly valued experience for participants. Over its lifetime, over 200,000 children and young people have participated in the Seasons for Growth Program, along with thousands of adults.

“Children come to school with more than the bags on their back.”
— Lynam, 2015

Behind every student is a story.
Bereavement and other life challenges can significantly impact a student’s development and readiness to learn. Schools are uniquely placed to support not just academic growth, but emotional resilience too.

Seasons for Growth offers a safe, structured space within schools to help children and young people navigate grief, loss, and change—building emotional literacy and confidence along the way.
If you’re an educator or school leader, consider how Seasons for Growth could support your students’ wellbeing journey. https://ow.ly/3ZfP50WZWlx

National partnership strengthening postvention support for Australian communities impacted by su***de
MacKillop Seasons is part of a new national partnership, the National Postvention Leadership Group (NPLG), collaborating with leading organisations headspace National (Schools & Communities), StandBy Support After Su***de, and Thirrili, to increase protective factors and reduce risk for those bereaved by su***de.

The aim of the group is to strengthen communities with support that is compassionate, coordinated, and culturally appropriate. Through shared experience, the NPLG organisations have a united belief that postvention is prevention.

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day, and the theme this year is Changing the Narrative. We can contribute to changing the narrative about the topic of su***de, and about grief, loss and change - by having safe and supportive conversations with our loved ones, and people we know and care about. Sometimes we may not know where to start, or how to support people who are bereaved by su***de, or other losses.

At Mackillop Seasons, we have resources and programs to support schools, community groups, and the wider community to have supportive conversations. Our evidence-based Seasons for Growth programs enable trained companions to work with children, young people, and adults to tell their stories of loss and change.

Supportive conversations about grief and loss help us to understand that we are not alone. This World Su***de Prevention Day, we stand with those bereaved by su***de loss, and all those impacted by su***de.

🌿 Father's Day: A Day of Love, Memory, and Reflection 🌿
Today, we honour fathers in all their forms — those who are with us, those we've lost, and those we hold in our hearts.

For many, Father’s Day is a time of celebration, laughter, and gratitude. For others, it’s a day touched by grief — missing a dad, a child, or a father figure who is no longer here.

To those navigating loss today: your feelings are valid, your memories are sacred, and your love endures. Whether your grief is fresh or quietly woven into your everyday life, you are not alone.

💙 Thinking of you all today — with love, compassion, and gentle strength.

For over 15 years, Lee Bromley and Trish Quig have been running the Seasons for Growth program at Reiby Youth Justice Centre — a space that supports up to 55 young people aged 10–18.

With the guidance of the Chaplaincy team, case workers, and local Elders, this program helps young people navigate grief and loss in a safe, culturally respectful environment. The centre has a high representation of Indigenous youth, and the program plays a vital role in fostering healing, resilience, and hope.

Trish and Lee joined us at the recent Lead the Way conference in Melbourne to share their journey.

🕊️ National Grief Awareness Day 🕊️
Today, we pause to acknowledge the silent journeys that so many of us walk-through.
Whether it's the loss of a loved one, a relationship, a job, a pet or a dream—grief is deeply personal, and it doesn’t follow a timeline.

Understanding grief helps us support others better.
Be present.
Invite them for a walk, drop by for a cup of tea, or offer practical help like preparing a meal.
Even small gestures show you care.
Awareness is kindness. Be grief aware.

Available in a variety of languages, MacKillop Seasons offers free resources to support children, young people and adults through grief. https://www.mackillopseasons.org.au/resource-list/?mf=3%3D0

Our Story

Good Grief's programs aim to strengthen the social and emotional well being of people who are experiencing major life changes and losses such as death, separation and divorce by supporting them to explore the impact of change and loss on everyday life and to learn new ways to respond. Written by Professor Anne Graham and built upon J William Worden’s theory of grief, our flagship program, Seasons for Growth, is an innovative grief, change and loss education program that uses the imagery of the seasons to illustrate the experience of grief. Our education programs are evidence based, and many external evaluations over the years have continued to affirm Seasons for Growth and its contribution to the lives of people touched by loss and grief. Throughout its 21 year lifespan Seasons for Growth Children and Young People’s Program has gone through three iterations to incorporate new evidence and ensure that it continues to provide a relevant and highly valued experience for participants. Over its lifetime, over 200,000 children and young people have participated in Seasons for Growth, along with thousands of adults.

The unique thing about our programs is that they enable you to become a Companion and make a difference within your own community. That way, children do not need to be removed from their familiar environment or work with unfamiliar faces in order to learn skills to help them become more emotionally adaptable, resilient and learn how to respond positively to change, in other words, life-skills. You are also empowered to respond to a need when it arises and within your own time-frame.
