MacKillop Seasons

MacKillop Seasons MacKillop Seasons help build the wellbeing and resilience of communities following adversity.

MacKillop Seasons' programs aim to strengthen the social and emotional well being of people who are experiencing major life changes and losses such as death, separation and divorce by supporting them to explore the impact of change and loss on everyday life and to learn new ways to respond. Written by Professor Anne Graham and built upon J William Worden’s theory of grief, our flagship program Seasons for Growth is an innovative grief and loss education program that uses the imagery of the seasons to illustrate the experience of grief. Our education programs are evidence based, and many external evaluations over the years have continued to affirm Seasons for Growth and its contribution to the lives of people touched by loss and grief. Throughout its 20 year lifespan the Seasons for Growth Children and Young People’s Program has gone through three iterations to incorporate new evidence and ensure that it continues to provide a relevant and highly valued experience for participants. Over its lifetime, over 200,000 children and young people have participated in the Seasons for Growth Program, along with thousands of adults.

Stormbirds making a resilient impact in the ACT

The AIDR Resilient Australia Awards is a nation-wide program celebrating initiatives that build and foster community resilience to disasters and emergencies. In Oct 2024, a project run by the Canberra Health Service (CHS) funded the training of 41 child and family workers from the ACT in the MacKillop Season’s Stormbirds program. As a result, a Stormbirds network has been established, further promoting Canberra’s mental health resilience, and providing opportunities for co-facilitation with other services such as schools, early childhood education centres, general practices, and libraries. The CHS is the ACT award finalist for the Resilient Australia National Mental Health and Wellbeing Award, reflecting the importance of this work. The national winner for the category to be announced!

🦋 Children’s Grief Awareness Week 🦋

This week reminds us of the profound impact change, loss, and grief can have on children and young people.

At Seasons for Growth, we create safe spaces where children and young people can share, connect, and feel supported. Our program helps build resilience, self-esteem, and a sense of belonging, giving them the skills to adapt to their experiences of change and loss.

“… many of the students have reported an increase in feeling comfortable talking about their life changes and loved ones who have passed, in a more positive way.”

Supporting Men Through Change, Loss & Grief

Men experience many changes and losses throughout life, and they deserve safe spaces to share, connect, and grow.

At MacKillop Seasons, our Seasons for Growth programs help men build strategies for moving forward.

A group in a men’s homelessness service showed the power of peer support and having a voice. Many men are fathers, and when we support men, we support families and communities.

Why is Kindness Important for Children and Young People?

Kindness is more than just being nice, it’s a powerful skill that helps children build empathy, strengthen friendships, and feel connected to others. In the early years, children begin to understand how their actions affect those around them. Learning to be kind is a key part of this journey.

Seasons for Growth supports young people in understanding change, loss, and resilience and kindness plays a vital role in that process. Whether it’s offering a smile, helping a friend, or doing a Random Act of Kindness, these small gestures help children feel empowered and valued.

💡 Create a Kindness Jar!
Decorate a jar together and fill it with slips of paper that have kind ideas like:

Help a family member 🧹
Write a thank-you note 💌
Invite someone to join in 🤝

You can pull out a kindness idea each day or week — or use the jar to collect kind acts that have already happened and celebrate them! 🎉

Take a moment to remember.

"We must find time to stop and thank the people who make a difference in our lives."
— John F. Kennedy

Today, we honour those who served, those who sacrificed, and those who continue to make a difference. We will remember them.

Children’s Voices Matter

Seasons for Growth empowers young people to navigate change, loss & grief, by listening, supporting, and recognising their rights.

"We are providing opportunities for young people to learn knowledge and skills for life – naming and managing feelings, making good decisions, setting goals, knowing who and where they can reach out to for support."
- Distinguished Professor Anne Graham, AO
(Author of the Seasons for Growth program).

✨ Navigating the Transition to High School ✨

As the school year wraps up, many Year 6 students are preparing to take a big step into secondary school. This transition can bring a mix of excitement, nerves, and uncertainty.

Seasons for Growth supports schools in guiding students through these changes, helping them explore their emotions and build resilience. We're grateful for companions like Bernadette, who create safe spaces for children to reflect, learn, and grow.

💬 “It’s a privilege to walk alongside children as they navigate change.” – Bernadette

Our Story

Good Grief's programs aim to strengthen the social and emotional well being of people who are experiencing major life changes and losses such as death, separation and divorce by supporting them to explore the impact of change and loss on everyday life and to learn new ways to respond. Written by Professor Anne Graham and built upon J William Worden’s theory of grief, our flagship program, Seasons for Growth, is an innovative grief, change and loss education program that uses the imagery of the seasons to illustrate the experience of grief. Our education programs are evidence based, and many external evaluations over the years have continued to affirm Seasons for Growth and its contribution to the lives of people touched by loss and grief. Throughout its 21 year lifespan Seasons for Growth Children and Young People’s Program has gone through three iterations to incorporate new evidence and ensure that it continues to provide a relevant and highly valued experience for participants. Over its lifetime, over 200,000 children and young people have participated in Seasons for Growth, along with thousands of adults.

The unique thing about our programs is that they enable you to become a Companion and make a difference within your own community. That way, children do not need to be removed from their familiar environment or work with unfamiliar faces in order to learn skills to help them become more emotionally adaptable, resilient and learn how to respond positively to change, in other words, life-skills. You are also empowered to respond to a need when it arises and within your own time-frame.
