An insightful and clear interview given by one of the academics in my Art Therapy Masters course about art therapy in hospitals and schools, and some recent research/evidence showing the positive correlation between art therapy and the need for restraint/seclusion/sedation. 👏

The National Health Survey (NHS) of 2020-2021 conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) suggests that one in five Australians struggle with mental illness at some point in their lives, with impacts extending beyond ourselves, to friends and family members, as well as the wider community...

I've experienced this a few times playing football⚽️ where the contrast between 'letting go' and trying hard is so pronounced. I wonder about my former art practice, where I had so much more expertise, and whether I was sometimes in this state but just wasn't aware of it or didn't think of it as being in 'the zone'.

A new study unveils how the brain enters the creative flow state, famously known as being "in the zone."

As access to mental health care becomes harder and more expensive, adult art classes are helping many regain their mental health through creativity and fun.

Space 22 follows seven strangers, each with their own lived experience of mental ill health, as they take part in an ambitious experiment to test if the simple act of participating in art can help heal invisible wounds.

Open mind, open enquiry...

Food for thought, and action. Certainly a challenge!

Desire is fueled by the unknown, and for that reason, it’s inherently anxiety-producing. In his book Open to Desire, the Buddhist psychoanalyst Mark Epstein explains that our willingness to engage that mystery keeps desire alive.

Faced with the irrefutable otherness of our partner, we can respond with fear or with curiosity. We can try to reduce the other to a knowable entity, or we can embrace her persistent mystery.

When we resist the urge to control, when we keep ourselves open, we preserve the potential for discovery. Eroticism resides in the ambiguous space between anxiety and fascination. We remain interested in our partners; they delight us, and we’re drawn to them.

For many of us, renouncing the illusion of safety — and accepting the reality of our fundamental insecurity — proves to be a difficult step. It’s a tremendous risk to embrace the unknown and reside in a space of vulnerability. But in taking that risk, we unlock a rewarding new realm of possibility.

Art Therapy

Enhancing the quality of life by accessing creativity & imagination.

Suitable for all ages and many life situations - you do not need to be good at art!

Alain de Botton says art is “a therapeutic medium that can help guide, exhort and console... enabling one to become better versions of themselves.” I couldn’t agree more.
