A recent comment on LinkedIn said, "as to the use of psychotropic drugs and locked wards, believing they are best for people living with dementia." That kind of thinking misses the human side of care. Medication can sometimes reduce symptoms — but it isn’t the only (or always the best) answer.

We’ve introduced over 300 PARO Seal Australia and over 650 HUG by LAUGH - AUSTRALIA into care routines, and the results are telling: calmer residents, increased social interaction, and improved staff-resident connections. These are not gimmicks — they’re supported by research and real-world outcomes.

To add perspective, roughly $21 MILLION is spent on dementia-specific medications. Imagine redirecting part of that investment toward evidence-based, non-pharmacological interventions that preserve dignity and spark connection. That’s where real change happens.

This Dementia Action Week, let’s challenge ourselves to reach out, reconnect and support those living with dementia and their carers. Because nobody should face dementia alone.
