Today’s highlight: genuine smiles. ☺️🤗

A recent comment on LinkedIn said, "as to the use of psychotropic drugs and locked wards, believing they are best for people living with dementia." That kind of thinking misses the human side of care. Medication can sometimes reduce symptoms — but it isn’t the only (or always the best) answer.

We’ve introduced over 300 PARO Seal Australia and over 650 HUG by LAUGH - AUSTRALIA into care routines, and the results are telling: calmer residents, increased social interaction, and improved staff-resident connections. These are not gimmicks — they’re supported by research and real-world outcomes.

To add perspective, roughly $21 MILLION is spent on dementia-specific medications. Imagine redirecting part of that investment toward evidence-based, non-pharmacological interventions that preserve dignity and spark connection. That’s where real change happens.

If you work in aged care or acute settings and would like to try these tools, I’m happy to help — or drop your questions below.

💜 Another inspiring Dementia Action Week event today!

Hosted by the Central Coast Dementia Alliance with support from the Central Coast Health Team and Dementia Australia

I had the pleasure of showcasing two innovative supports:

🤗 HUG by LAUGH - Australia HUG by LAUGH - AUSTRALIA – a sensory comfort item designed to be cuddled

Both offer non-pharmacological approaches to reduce depression, anxiety, and agitation — making a real difference for people living with dementia.

doesn’t just affect the person living with the condition – it touches their carers, family, friends and wider community.

Too often, people living with dementia share that friends and family drift away, unsure how to stay connected after a diagnosis. This can lead to loneliness, isolation, and reinforce stigma.

With more than 433,000 Australians living with dementia – and 1.7 million people involved in their care – chances are we all know someone impacted.

This Dementia Action Week, let’s challenge ourselves to reach out, reconnect and support those living with dementia and their carers. Because nobody should face dementia alone.

We’ve seen first-hand how innovations like the 🤗 HUG by LAUGH - Australia can provide comfort, connection and reduce feelings of isolation for those living with dementia.

Together, we can all play a role in creating a more connected and supportive community.
