In Gallup’s recent “State of the Global Workplace” data shows that Australia ranks #2 in the world for life satisfaction… sounds good right? Although this sounds promising, when you zoom out on the trend line, Australia’s life satisfaction is actually declining year on year, and our stress levels are up a whopping 16% since 2011 - this is the fastest rise globally.

For all the poor time data nerds out there, Joep has combed through the report and analysed what the data and trends are actually telling us. We look at Aus/NZ, US/Canada, and Europe.

How do you improve wellbeing if no one can agree on what it actually means?

That’s the question our researchers have been working to answer - and this week, the work got a significant stamp of credibility. Our Taxonomy of Positive Mental Health has just been published in Nature Mental Health, one of the world’s leading peer-reviewed journals.

It’s a framework built from 155 published measures, 800 participants, and 122 international experts across 26 countries. And it’s already informing how Australia approaches mental health at a policy level.

There’s a reason we keep doing these in person.

Last week we brought together a room of HR and people leaders in Sydney for our first breakfast Fruit for Thought, and the conversation didn’t disappoint.

The topic: change, wellbeing and performance. Three insights we’re still sitting with 👇

1. People don’t resist change. They resist being changed. What people need most during transition is clarity on the standard, paired with a culture of genuine feedback. And feedback isn’t criticism — it’s care.

2. The boring stuff moves the dial. Clear roles. Effective relationships with leaders. Regular one-on-ones. Less exciting than a fruit bowl, more effective than almost everything else.

3. The story you tell yourself about change determines the outcome. Reframing a setback from “my career is over” to “this is a chance to fix the fundamentals” is the difference between victimhood and ownership.

A huge thank you to James, Christie and Anthony for showing up with such honesty and humour and to everyone who came along for making it what it was.
