Dr Dhanya brings extensive expertise in managing a wide range of endocrine conditions, including thyroid disorders, diabetes, pituitary and adrenal conditions, parathyroid disorders, and bone health.

She has completed advanced training at leading institutions including Prince of Wales Hospital, Blacktown Hospital, and Wollongong Hospital, and is known for her holistic, patient-centred approach—taking the time to understand each patient’s medical history, lifestyle, and individual needs.

ADHD and Bipolar Disorder in Females:
A Diagnostic Distinction That Matters.

In clinical practice, ADHD in girls and women is frequently misidentified as Bipolar Disorder — particularly when emotional intensity and mood instability are prominent.

However, these are distinct conditions with different longitudinal patterns.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder with lifelong traits.
Bipolar Disorder is an episodic mood disorder.

Key distinctions:

ADHD
• Chronic pattern since childhood
• Mood shifts are rapid and reactive
• Emotional dysregulation is situational
• Sleep difficulty with persistent fatigue
• No sustained elevated mood state

Bipolar Disorder
• Discrete mood episodes lasting days to weeks
• Decreased need for sleep without fatigue
• Sustained elevated or markedly irritable mood
• Grandiosity, increased goal-directed activity
• Depressive episodes between manic/hypomanic phases

Importantly, ADHD and Bipolar Disorder can co-exist.
When comorbid, ADHD symptoms form the baseline presentation, with superimposed mood episodes. These cases require careful diagnostic formulation and close psychiatric monitoring to ensure safe pharmacological management.

Misdiagnosis can lead to inappropriate treatment — including stimulant-induced mood destabilisation or unnecessary mood stabiliser exposure.

A comprehensive developmental history, mood charting, and longitudinal assessment remain essential.

We are delighted to welcome Dr Ashwani Garg to the eMed Specialist family.

Dr Garg is a highly experienced consultant psychiatrist who has worked extensively across public mental health services throughout Australia as well as in private practice. He has previously served as the Acting Director of the Mood Academic Unit at Metro South Addiction and Mental Health Services, and also as the Director of a private mental health clinic.

With his deep expertise in the assessment and treatment of adult psychiatric patients, Dr Garg brings a wealth of clinical knowledge, leadership experience, and compassionate care to our team.

We are excited to have him on board and look forward to the valuable contribution he will make to our patients and the broader eMed community.
