NDIS planning is changing — what does that mean for you?

From mid–2026, a new approach to assessments and funding is being introduced, with more structured and standardised processes used to determine support needs.

For participants, families and support teams, this may change how plans are created, how funding is allocated, and how recommendations are considered. There may be less reliance on multiple reports and more emphasis on centralised assessments.

As these changes begin rolling out across 2026, making sure your needs are clearly understood and communicated will be more important than ever.

Choosing the right provider matters more than people often realise. It can shape how clearly you understand your plan, how smoothly services run, and how well your supports align with your goals.

Look for experience, clear communication, and a provider who takes the time to understand your needs — not just deliver a service.

The right fit makes the process easier, more consistent, and more effective.

Care shouldn’t start with funding — it should start with the person.

The first step is understanding what someone needs, what they want to achieve, and what will make the biggest difference in their day-to-day life.

From there, support can be shaped to fit within their plan — not the other way around.

When care starts with the person, it becomes more practical, more meaningful, and more effective.

NDIS reports aren’t rejected because the assessment is wrong — they’re often rejected because the documentation doesn’t clearly connect the evidence to the recommendation.

Reports need to show how a person’s functional challenges link to the support being requested.

When that connection isn’t clear, the NDIA may ask for clarification or return the report.

What challenges have you seen with NDIS documentation?

Great care rarely comes from one person working alone.

Strong outcomes happen when clinicians, support coordinators, families and care teams work together — sharing knowledge, perspectives and experience.

When everyone is aligned around the person, support becomes more practical, consistent and effective.

When funding sits unused in a home care package, it can sometimes mean support opportunities are being missed. A simple assessment or a few hours of allied health support could make a real difference — helping someone stay safer, more comfortable and independent in their own home.

Sometimes small interventions prevent much bigger changes later.

If you support someone with a home care package and aren’t sure how to use available funding, speak with our team about assessment options.

Occupational Therapist Lesley recently joined the Ability Matters program on VOX FM 106.9 to talk about her journey into OT, multidisciplinary allied health, major home modifications, and why proactive care matters.

One key message from the episode: pressure injuries can develop in as little as 20 minutes.

Preventative care isn’t just about equipment. It’s about proper assessment, positioning, education, and helping people move regularly and safely. From pressure-relieving cushions to specialised mattresses and carer training, early intervention makes a real difference.

Protecting comfort, dignity and long-term independence starts before a problem develops.

Thank you to the Ability Matters team, proudly sponsored by My Home Living Care, for creating space for these important conversations.

Myth: Any clinician will do, as long as someone is available.
Fact: Experience matters.

The right clinician makes confident decisions, avoids setbacks, and delivers care that leads to better outcomes.

Because when care is done properly, progress follows.
