When Wayne moved into Minkara Resort last year, he wasn’t downsizing - he was upsizing his lifestyle. β€œI live alone but felt it was time to move from my cramped unit to somewhere that offered more things to do,” he says. β€œNow I’ve got a three-bedroom apartment with a living area three times bigger than my old place.”

And he’s made the most of every inch. One bedroom is now a dedicated games room, home to his pinball and arcade machines and even a model railway! The community workshop? That’s his second home. β€œIt’s like having a giant man cave I don’t have to clean,” he laughs. β€œI’m in there every day making things like cheese boards and coffee tables.”

Wayne says the move has given him peace of mind. β€œI find managing my finances a little easier knowing I have a monthly account that’s automatically deducted. I even freed up some money, so if I need new furniture, I’m in a position to just buy it. I’m happy with my decision, I’m not going anywhere.”

We love to hear that Wayne upsized into retirement living! And sounds like now he's got room for a whole lot more fun.

Geoff and Jenny Rook have such an important story and last month, shared their story with The Courier Mail. They have not once regretted their decision to move to Sunset Palms Retirement Living on the Sunshine Coast, as just six months after moving in, Geoff received the devastating news that a condition affecting his vision had deteriorated rapidly and he was deemed legally blind.

β€œI now appreciate just how terrific our villa is with no steps and nothing at all in the design for me to trip on. I feel Aveo had our situation in mind when they designed this home,’’ Geoff said. β€œOur situation would have been diabolical if my diagnosis had occurred while we were still living in our previous house. Now we are perfectly placed. I feel safe and receive wonderful support from staff, regular visits from the Aveo care at home team and we are surrounded by caring neighbours.’’

Geoff and Jenny downsized from their nearby four-bedroom home to a large two-bedroom villa with a double garage, outdoor entertaining area, and garden. β€œIt’s so spacious that we were even able to comfortably entertain our whole family of 18 at Christmas!’’ Jenny said. β€œI still can’t believe the timing of Geoff’s dramatic vision loss,’’ Jenny said. β€œNot a day goes by when we don’t say how lucky we are to live here. It’s been a blessing.’’

We’re so glad you made the move Geoff and Jenny! Their story is a heartfelt reminder that the right move, at the right time can truly change everything for the better.

Walking into Ron Gillard’s apartment at The Newstead Residences in Brisbane is like stepping into an Australian car museum. With 12 appearances in the Bathurst 500/1000 as a driver, plus many years as a mechanic and team manager, as well as a long career in the Australian car racing community, Ron is such a character and has a treasure trove of incredible memories to share.

As a young, apprentice mechanic, Ron’s daily drive was over the winding Cambewarra Mountain on the NSW South Coast, which he later compared to Mount Panorama. His first car was a Mini, which he modified and admits drove perhaps a little too enthusiastically! At his first race at Oran Park in 1967, in his Mini Cooper S, he finished third and said, β€œI went home with a pretty big, swelled head after that, but then at the next meeting they put me up into Division 1, so I had to go and get a smaller crash helmet because my head had shrunk again!"

Ron founded the Ballina Car Care Centre which became a hub for race car preparation and throughout his career, Ron prepared cars for top racing teams and drivers like Mark Gibbs, Sir Jack Brabham, Jim Richards and many others. He said that motor racing was great for his business, keeping him in touch with the latest technology. Ron left The Ballina Car Care Centre in his son’s capable hands before moving to Brisbane to start his next adventure.

He said, β€œI lived on a five-acre property in Alstonville near my workshop in Ballina. After my wife, Janette passed away, the house was getting harder to look after. My daughter lives in Brisbane and we had some friends who had moved to The Newstead Residences, so we visited them to take a look around. When we arrived, I thought this isn’t a retirement village, I feel like I’m at The Stamford Plaza! This is pretty good!”

We’re so happy you chose to move to The Newstead Residences Ron, we know some of your cheeky neighbours give you a time limit for how long you can talk about cars at Happy Hour, but secretly we think they love your stories as much as we do!

A truly memorable day for Mary Arthur, resident at Sackville Grange who recently had a visit from Andy Gowers, President of the Hawthorn Football Club! Andy presented Mary with a special Hawks Guernsey in tribute to her late husband, Graham Arthur - AFL Hall of Fame Member, Hawthorn legend and Premiership captain.

Mary said, "Graham and I both came from Bendigo, I knew him because he played football with my brother and met him at one of the club social functions at the time. We were married for 60 years, we had great times and fond memories at the Hawthorn Football Club."

It was a special reminder of how sport can shape lives, build communities, and leave lasting legacies. It is so wonderful to see Hawthorn Football Club celebrate Mary and Graham’s incredible story.

After years on acreage, Jacqui and Robert Hill made the move to Springfield Vista – and they haven’t looked back! Now closer to family and medical plus enjoying a vibrant, low-maintenance community, their story is a beautiful reminder of what retirement living is all about.

Jacqui and Robert were recently interviewed for Local Ipswich News, and Robert said, β€œWe’ve seen more of our grandchildren in the past three months than we did in the last three years. If we weren’t living here, we wouldn’t have been able to attend our young granddaughter’s birthday, our niece’s 18th and spend time with our newest grandchild.’’

We love to see wonderful stories of connection like this one! Thanks to Jacqui and Robert for sharing their story!

We also caught a glimpse of the scaffolding coming down on the Corymbia Residences as part of the story, we’ll be keeping an eye out for the big reveal of this stunning new addition to Bella Vista Haven!

After two years of careful planning and construction, residents, Aveo CEO Tony Randello, and the Aveo team recently celebrated the stunning transformation at Fountain Court in Burwood! ✨

Fountain Court’s rejuvenated community centre has officially reopened, unveiling stylish new spaces for residents to relax, connect with friends or host family gatherings as well as a collection of 17 one- and two-bedroom spacious apartments. The community centre now features a cafΓ©, theatrette, bar, private dining room, and library and residents are loving the new spaces.

Long-time resident Rosemary McGinn said, β€œNow it is complete, it is just divine. I really find it difficult to decide what is now my favourite part of Fountain Court, but perhaps it is the superb new cafΓ©. I love how tastefully it has been done, and I can sit outside in the sun on a nice day. As a keen reader, I look forward to spending time in the library and the opportunity to rekindle my love of watercolour painting in the new arts and craft room. But I’m dying to use the gym, watch a movie in the Gold Class quality cinema, and invite friends and family for a drink in the bar in the new functions area. My family has already organised to host my 90th birthday celebration in October in the private dining room. I look forward to that!"

We were so pleased to share the celebration with The Inge family, as the founders of the Fountain Court community. Residents at Fountain Court and the Aveo team had a wonderful time celebrating this milestone together, and we can’t wait to hear about all the new memories created in this beautiful, connected community.

It’s National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June), and this year’s theme is β€œBridging Now to Next”. It’s a time to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements and explore how we can all contribute to achieving reconciliation.

As part of Aveo’s Reconciliation Action Plan, we are committed to continuing our efforts to include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Aveo teams, business networks and communities, and to help create an equal and just society.

As a tangible expression of our commitment to Reconciliation, Aveo commissioned First Nations artist, Jeremy Donovan to create a poignant artwork titled 'Na Tjunga’. We are excited to share that a canvas print of Jeremy’s incredible artwork is now proudly displayed in every Aveo community.

We encourage you to show your support for Reconciliation by attending events during National Reconciliation Week. Great places to find event information include your local council website and Reconciliation Australia’s events calendar - https://www.reconciliation.org.au/calendar/.

At The Manors of Mosman, Whisky & Poetry Evenings have become a beloved tradition, bringing residents together for over seven years. What began as a simple idea from the community's social group, the evenings have blossomed into a signature event at the village that residents look forward to each month.

Held on the first and third Thursday of each month, residents gather to share a drink, recite poetry, and connect over stories and verse. Some bring their favourite whisky on silver trays, while others sip wine or simply listen in. The real magic lies in the poetry, with themes that range from English poets to family memories, sparking imaginations and lively discussions.

Cheers to The Manors of Mosman residents for the perfect blend of creativity, camaraderie, and a touch of whisky! πŸ₯ƒ
