Naturopath Merridie

Naturopath Merridie Merridie is a degree-qualified Naturopath consulting in-person & online Merridie has always known that she wanted to help people.

This led to her embarking on initial studies in Psychology/Psychophysiology before discovering Naturopathy, where her passion for further understanding the mind-body connection was fulfilled. Graduating in 2013, Merridie then worked in private practice for 5+ years where she educated many children, adolescents and families about the impact of nutritional choices on mood, sleep, sports performance,

everything! It was there that she truly honed her Food as Medicine Practitioner skills. Looking to use her Naturopathic skills in a different way, Merridie then joined the business development team at NIIM. Her role involved liaising with multiple integrative medicine practitioners to enhance the collaborative care model for clients and she observed just how well this can work. She also led some nutritional workshops in 2019 and will be doing more of this again soon! Returning to practice in 2020, Merridie also completed further study in pathology interpretation with Rachel Arthur and gained her Live & Coagulated Blood Microscopy qualification with Dr. Trevor Douglas. Merridie is passionate about educating and empowering her clients in a sustainable, realistic and inclusive way. Treatment includes utilising food as medicine concepts, nutrients, herbal medicine and lifestyle techniques from her ever-growing holistic toolkit to assist your body’s own healing capacity when given the right conditions. Merridie really values the client-practitioner partnership – her empathetic nature will ensure that you feel comfortable, seen and heard.

Podcast #440: The 5 Life Lessons People Learn Too Late, Why We Should Stop Trying To Live Longer & How Curiosity Leads To Compassion.”

2024 was a year of epic duality for me 🌀
I understand that duality is a principle of life, I’ve just never known such intense duality all at once.
I’m still processing some of it, to be honest.

Such high highs alongside such low lows.

And that was just in my own world, let alone what has been going on & continues to go on around the world.
Heartbreaking times in so many ways ❤️‍🩹

I always seek to find the meaning in things, and I’ve honestly struggled with that as I think a lot of us have when we’ve watched on in horror from afar at the atrocities.

And at the same time, it is important to be working on holding all of it together, so that you can show up how you want to show up in your own life and for the people that you love.

It’s Women’s Health Week! 💚

Theme: Your voice, your choice.

As a Naturopath, I am an advocate for you and your health.
My patients will often hear me say, “You deserve to know the most about your body and your health, and I’m here to help you do that.”

I’ve realised that I haven’t shared a lot about my own health journey on here.
Let me tell you a bit of my story about where I had to be my own advocate…

___.___

In my early-mid twenties, whilst studying Naturopathy, our lecturer had set us the task of going to our GP with a comprehensive blood test checklist, alongside our known family history of health issues.
The idea being to see what was approved to be tested - and overall, to show the variation in experiences.

My family history includes some solid thyroid dysfunction & autoimmunity 🦋

At the time, I was experiencing:
• intense fatigue
• serious intolerance to the cold
• extremely painful & heavy periods

The above symptoms alone should have warranted a through thyroid check, let alone my family health history.

The first two GPs I went to flat-out refused to write me a referral for any tests (it miiight have gone differently if I hadn’t mentioned I was studying Naturopathy?! 😜)

The 3rd GP I saw listened to my symptoms and told me, “You won’t have a thyroid issue until you try to get pregnant - then you’ll have to worry.” ‼️
(So many things wrong with being told this; don’t get me started)

But wow, did that cement in my mind that preventative health was a concept unique to Naturopathy!

It was the 4th GP who actually listened to me, factored in my family health history, and ran some thorough blood tests.

I FINALLY felt heard, I had a voice.

In the next post, I’ll show you what my blood test results looked like and why I am SO passionate about my patients having some blood tests done…

👋🏼 I’m starting a new post series titled: This Is Not a Panacea.

Wait - what is a panacea, you’re asking?

A panacea is “a remedy for all disease or ills.”

In other words, a cure-all 🪄

📣 📣 First up (because I had a day last week of everyone asking me about it! AND because here in Australia, we’ve hit the cold months & everyone is getting sick!)

📌 ArmaForce

It’s a great formula ✅

Perhaps your yoga or Pilates teacher has told you about it.

Or, your bestie gave you a bottle when you were sick.

And, you can purchase it pretty easily from that certain warehouse of supplements.

BUT, it is not a panacea 🙅🏻‍♀️

As you can see from my poll (slide no. 8) you cannot and should not take it for any longer than 2 weeks.

I’ve heard of people taken it allll through Winter, for months on end!

📌 What you need to know is:

ArmaForce is designed to be taken acutely: when you’re experiencing those very first (acute) niggly signs of a common cold coming on 🤒

It contains the herb Andrographis paniculata which works as an incredible adaptogen & immune-modulator.

❌ Some people, however, have a known allergy to Andrographis (belonging to the Acanthaceae plant family).

❌ I’ve known of people breaking out in a hot rash after taking ArmaForce - a clear sign that their body didn’t like it!

❌ Another adverse reaction that has been reported is the development of “taste disturbance” after taking this product.

So, do you see? This is not a panacea; it is not for everyone.

Please seek herbal medicine advice from a trained herbalist/Naturopath.

❔Did you learn something from this? Comment below & let me know 😊

[Herbal medicine is a skill and advice should always be sought from a trained professional.
I never advocate for self-prescription of herbal medicine.
Practitioner-only TGA-approved products contain only the highest quality ingredients that are extensively tested for purity and potency. Safety & efficacy is vital]

Hi friends 🤍

I have been very still on my feed here, for quite some time, for many reasons.
(I have been more present in my stories! And excitingly, we’re working on my branding ✨)

Earlier this year I was feeling pretty overwhelmed by what had been going on in my own world, let alone what has been going on around the world. And it continues..

In clinic where I have kept my focus, I am seeing so much burn out, fatigue, mental health deficiencies.. not to mention hormonal imbalances, menstrual cycle issues, the list goes on.

We are living in such very interesting times.

The quote above that I’m posting came from a few months ago when I really needed it; I’m sharing it now because it’s still as relevant and I hope you find it validating, too, if you need that.

You’re allowed to be quiet in the face of everything that is going on, if you need to do that.
I needed to, for a while.

Please go gently with yourselves, and with others 🤍

I’ve been in a bit of denial (still haven’t had that final beach day in Melbourne!🤞🏼) but…

Autumn seems to be here.

Are you finding that your food cravings are changing?

Your energy levels are a little different?

Perhaps it’s feeling a little harder to spring out of bed in the morning?

Don’t fight these things; work with them. How you felt during summer might now be very different to how you’re currently feeling 💛

If you’re needing to rest more? Do it!

And remember to watch the autumn leaves dancing 🍂

🤍 International Women’s Day 🤍

Today and every day, I am so grateful for all of the incredible women that I have around me.

I would not be the person that I am today without these women holding me, supporting me, nourishing me.

It is a very sacred thing to have such a tribe around you ✨

There is such duality, I find, to being a woman and the expectations about being a woman; it is something that we navigate on the daily.

“Here’s to strong women. May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.”

Summer is for smoothies! 🍌🤎

This is my latest smoothie recipe on regular rotation:

• 1 banana
• 1 big scoop of Protein Complete powder
• 1 1/2 tbsp cacao powder
• A big sprinkle of cinnamon
• 1/4 tsp maca powder
• A dash of quality salt (I like pink )
• A big dollop of tahini
• 1 cup of your favourite plant-based mylk ( is the ultimate!)
• A few ice cubes (if you’re not using a frozen banana)

Blend on high until it’s the perfect smoothie consistency & enjoy 💛

There’s a lot of protein powders out there but this is my favourite because it contains certified, raw, bio-fermented brown rice protein + proteolytic enzymes for good digestion 👍🏼

It is a practitioner-only brand so let me know below if you’d like more info on how to get some! 👇🏼

I have been moving quietly through this festive season, and it has been exactly what I needed 🤍

2022 was a huge year for me, like so many of you.
I was absolutely hanging on for the ride, moving through adversity and constant change.
I feel like it was a huge time of leveling up; personally, professionally, emotionally, spiritually ✨

I think my motto through all of this was: “Trust the process.”

And I am feeling so grateful for all of it, especially the hardest, darkest parts 🙏🏼

So grateful for the support of my family, friends and community.

So grateful for my patients - it’s truly such an honour to be trusted to help you with your health 💚 and in turn you have been supporting me as a small business, through THE most challenging time to be one.

I’m so grateful for my health, and for having my health knowledge through being a Naturopath.

So grateful for time spent in Nature on Wurundjeri land.

Here’s to 2023, friends✨

I already know what my theme is for this year (I’m not into resolutions and the pressure to make them)

2023 is going to be the year of more self-care & nurturing.

Thank you for being here with me 🤗

PS. Can you spot the turtle in this photo? 🐢

I’m trying not to get caught up in the “busyness” and the “shoulds” and the immense pressure of this time of the year, after another gigantic year that isn’t even over yet 🤍

I love this poem and wanted to share it as a reminder to you all to slow down a little, to remember to notice the little things 🤍

Invitation, Mary Oliver:

“Oh do you have time

to linger

for just a little while

out of your busy

and very important day

for the goldfinches

that have gathered

in a field of thistles

for a musical battle,

to see who can sing

the highest note,

or the lowest,

or the most expressive of mirth,

or the most tender?

Their strong, blunt beaks

drink the air

as they strive

melodiously

not for your sake

and not for mine

and not for the sake of winning

but for sheer delight and gratitude –

believe us, they say,

it is a serious thing

just to be alive

on this fresh morning

in the broken world.

I beg of you,

do not walk by

without pausing

to attend to this

rather ridiculous performance.

It could mean something.

It could mean everything.

It could be what Rilke meant, when he wrote:

You must change your life.”

Hi friends 💚

How is it almost the end of the year?! And what a year 2022 has been.

I have been juggling a lot these last few months, it’s been an awesome whirlwind! More on that another time 😊

This is a quick message to say:

• there’s a few appointment times left this week 15th/16th Dec
• Thursday 22nd Dec is my last clinic day before Xmas - 1-2 appointment times left that day!
• Thursday 29th Dec there’s also 1-2 appointments left
• Closed Friday 30th Dec

So if you’ve been considering starting the journey of getting your health aligned, the year isn’t over yet! ✨

Current patients:
If you’re needing repeat herbal medicine tinctures over the break - please let me know by Friday 16th Dec.
Same goes for any repeat supplement prescriptions 😊👍🏼

Thank you 💚

PS. How do you like my concentration face?! 😂

“Leafy greens, at least once per day” is something my clients hear me say on the regular 🌿

Why?

Leafy greens are:

• delicious 🤓
• high in fibre - essential for a happy digestive system
• high in minerals like iron & magnesium
• high in vitamins A, B9 (folate), C & K
• available in so many different varieties!

Some of my favourites include:

• Tuscan cabbage/Tuscan kale (pictured)
• spinach
• cabbage
• watercress
• Swiss chard

And if you’re needing even more inspiration? Let this statistic from the June 2022 National Health Survey sink in:

93.9% of adults did not meet the recommended daily intake (RDI) for (both fruit and) vegetables 🥕

So.. how’s your vegetable intake? 🌿
