It’s Women’s Health Week! 💚
Theme: Your voice, your choice.
As a Naturopath, I am an advocate for you and your health.
My patients will often hear me say, “You deserve to know the most about your body and your health, and I’m here to help you do that.”
I’ve realised that I haven’t shared a lot about my own health journey on here.
Let me tell you a bit of my story about where I had to be my own advocate…
___.___
In my early-mid twenties, whilst studying Naturopathy, our lecturer had set us the task of going to our GP with a comprehensive blood test checklist, alongside our known family history of health issues.
The idea being to see what was approved to be tested - and overall, to show the variation in experiences.
My family history includes some solid thyroid dysfunction & autoimmunity 🦋
At the time, I was experiencing:
• intense fatigue
• serious intolerance to the cold
• extremely painful & heavy periods
The above symptoms alone should have warranted a through thyroid check, let alone my family health history.
The first two GPs I went to flat-out refused to write me a referral for any tests (it miiight have gone differently if I hadn’t mentioned I was studying Naturopathy?! 😜)
The 3rd GP I saw listened to my symptoms and told me, “You won’t have a thyroid issue until you try to get pregnant - then you’ll have to worry.” ‼️
(So many things wrong with being told this; don’t get me started)
But wow, did that cement in my mind that preventative health was a concept unique to Naturopathy!
It was the 4th GP who actually listened to me, factored in my family health history, and ran some thorough blood tests.
I FINALLY felt heard, I had a voice.
In the next post, I’ll show you what my blood test results looked like and why I am SO passionate about my patients having some blood tests done…
